I have downloaded the program start up list.

My question is how do I know what is safe to add to the list. So far I have added nothing but I have a rather lengthy list at start up and I am sure I probably don't need more than half of what start at start up.

Is there a list somewhere that will tell me what is safe to put on the list.

    I am running xp professional

    Thanks for any help

I could if I knew how to take a screen shot. Is it anything like copy and paste?

Exactly like copy and paste. There is a key on the keyboard labeled "PrintScreen", this is a copy key for the screen, then paste the .bmp image where ever you need it.

I am not doing something right. I hit the print screen and then try to paste here and I get nothing or I should say it doesn't give me the paste option.

It still isn't working. I'll keep trying in the mean time to crop it more.

There are two ways to show a screen on Major Geeks, and most other forums. One is to use compression such as .jpg, and you will still have to crop it (about 1/4 the screen). The other is to upload the entire image (still compressed) to a site such as photobucket (it's free) and link to it, which is the little picture icon on Major Geeks. This will allow you to show full sized images on your post, as opposed to the thumbnails the 1st method will show.

These techniques will be handy forever. as you can also store information on your hard disk more or less the same way, and attach them to email besides.

I don't get it. It may be that I don't have the right program to work with paint. I know I just can't get it to upload.

Paint is standard in windows, and is a general purpose tool. You have to paste it in paint, then save it in your hard disk. For temporary storage I use the desktop, then erase it. You also have to use this tool to paste the image to paint.

Once you have the image saved on the hard disk you can transfer it to where ever, photobucket to directly to the forum, but you have to save it somewhere first, the image in paint is only a temporary holding place.

Paint is extremely handy as a general purpose tool, so much so I have it on my desktop. There are many other equally good, and in many cases, better graphic editors, but paint is a standard.

I have saved the image from paint in png to the desktop but I can't load it here. I need to send it to photobucket or similar first is that correct. Sorry for the delays my phone started ringin off the hook.

I also appreciate the help being offered to me.

Really not advisable to put your full name up. Please download something like Screen Hunter 5.0 Free from here http://wisdom-soft.com/downloads/downloadfiles.htm and use this to crop and copy just the parts of the screen you need to upload. Then you can simply attach to your post using "Manage Attachments" within Majorgeeks.com or again via Flickr. I woudl advise you replace your current upload with one that removes your full name.

I acyually had it up at one point but my full name was in it so it was removed from the my post. I have now down loaded a program to edit my log to remove my name from it. If I can figure that program out I will repost. Otherwise I will just have to grin and suffer.

That is my point. You don't need to go to all this trouble. Re-read my previous post, download the Screen Hunter and just copy the parts of the screen shot that you actually need us to read, keeping your identity hidden.

You do. But as Post #23 says, this does not show your programs at start up. Merely the folder containing them. Please open the folder to show them and then post a new screenshot of it's contents.

I can't stand it anymore. LOL I'll try to help you out.
    Please down load CCleaner: http://www.majorgeeks.com/CCleaner_Slim_No_Yahoo_Toolbar_English_d4191.html
Install, and run it. You will see "Tools", click it and than click Startup.
Expand the window or maximize it so that we can see all your startups. Then take your screenshot and post it.
I know this all seems a bit tedious, but once you get the hang of screenshots and posting what you need for help, you'll find it more fun. ;)

Maybe you should install a program like AnVir task manager: -

    http://www.majorgeeks.com/Task_Manager_Free_d5892.html

Under the "Startup" tab highlight any program and then the lower pane will provide you with exhaustive information about that program, including its security status.

This suite does far more than just analyze startups, it provides comprehensive info on all processes and will be useful for other purposes.

You should be able to remove all these from your startup safely. A couple that I didn't mark, I'm not exactly sure what they do for your PC. (I didn't look them up)
Just remember that some of these you will have to start yourself when you want to use them and you will have to update the ones like Java yourself, but that's not a big problem to do. ctfmon.exe doesn't need to be in startup, but it will keep reappearing, so..... just leave it.

No, do not use CCLeaner to remove them from start up. Use an application like StartUpCPL which you can download from here. And correct, they will open manually on demand as you need them.
