I'm getting more and more irritated about the amount of cheap meat coming from abroad, the only reason its cheaper is because the animals are kept in terrible conditions and our farmers have to adhere to strict animal welfare guidelines.

So if the animals are kept in conditions that would be illegal over here and in most civilized countries how can it be morally right for the cheap meat to be consumed here?

I'm all for animal rights but its our meat industry being royally done over that gets my goat,I'm sure the same story is repeated all over the world.

So the poll should meat from abroad be banned unless they can prove our/your local animal welfare guidelines have been adhered to?

Here we try to ensure animal rights, particularly if selling to those who then transport overseas, because healthy stock if not shipped properly or in poor conditions will effect the state and health of the animals - and for the very reasons you have stated.

I would think you are having to import because you have a high incidence of mad cow?

lol...I have no idea if youre talking about the US. I know we have guidelines here and we have a ton of cows, so we really don't import as far as I know. The only thing I know is imported is that kobi beef from Japan maybe? It's so expensive that I have never had any interest.

I caught part of a program about all our farms 'UK' shutting down because they can't compete with the cheap Euro meat,in many European countries they have lax animal welfare laws if they have any at all.

We have massive campaigns over here to buy British meat produce but I don't think its enough, most people go for cheapest they can get, feeding a family is hard.

Funnily enough I've just been collecting some Sheppy's (ask Lev) gold medal cider to bring up with me for the family in tomorrow's trip to town.

Sheppys had all their meat half price as they were clearing the freezer for the next fresh meat session. They run all sorts of rare breeds of in their orchards and the meat is fantastic.

But then try any decent piece of Exmoor lamb, beef, bison, pork or venison and you will never want another bit of supermarket bootleather again.

I'd be more concerned with the quality and health and stuff of the meat, to be totally honest.

I am sure animals are mistreated in every facility at one point or another, it is just a matter of when the culprits are caught in the act. It is an unfortunate thing that people can be so malevolent. Personally I have steered clear of most meats for the time being unless I am really in a bad way for a steak or piece of chicken. At least fish have a protective coating to prevent to much damage to their flesh. Not to say mistreatment of them is any less of a bad thing.

Sometimes I get organic. Here, it only means it wasn't given steroids.

I'm a farm boy by raising, I like steak. A Lot. I do agree animals should be treated with respect, as should all of God's creatures, but I am an enemy of PETA (unless we're talking about People Eating Tasty Animals). I think anything can be taken to extremes, either way, and I value human life more than animals, always.

Humans are meant to eat meat. We eat too much perhaps, but vegetarianism is an example of extremism, although I respect their point of view as a lifestyle. Just don't try to impose it on anyone else.

I've often wondered if all the crap injected into cattle to force them to gain weight has contributed to the epidemic of obesity worldwide.

    How about cancer.

I'm not too worried about that. Things like Terramycin, an antibiotic that used to be highly effective until almost every bug developed an immunity because of massive overuse in the agriculture industry. It has a side effect of weight gain. Or growth hormones, which are pretty harmless overall but also cause weight gain.

If you want to worry about cancer risks think about the cooking process itself. Burning red meat, especially on iron skillets (as in frying), causes several carcinogenic compound to be created. Then there is the issue of red meat itself, no additives needed. Cooking anything in plastics (excepting ethylene plastics) also causes high risk compounds, especially in young children. The significant dose for these compound is measured in parts per trillion. Microwave cookware anyone? If it is clear plastic (opaque usually signals ethylene plastics) then there is a significant risk of the compound, wish I could remember it's initials (PBB?).
