Grumbles, would you want to pass on your tradition to your kids and find them out cold, leaning against your front door, or worst still, get a hospital call?

Peer pressure is one thing, but kids imprint from what they see.

The first one is discriminatory while being offensive. I found it irresponsible advertising that wouldn’t be allowed here.

Second one may appeal to some persons’ sense of humour (personally I found it dumb). However, it can be discriminatory and offensive to those persons who have bad teeth as well as for those persons with some mental disorder.

Couldn’t see the third one (failure), but I have the general idea of what your were saying.

Prometheos, understood your idea and the reasoning behind it, but it still wouldn’t be allowable because of human rights factors.

That why I put forward the suggestion (which runs in line with your proposal, but would be a more difficult task), for community work with an organisation like our Mission Beat (which deals with homeless drunken derelicts).:)

Kids can then see how these persons end up living, by following through with picking these persons off the streets to either take them hospital or to the Mother House for a shower and clothes change before putting them to bed. Meeting and speaking with these people when sober, one is shocked to find their previous lives involved families, professional careers, etc. brought to ruin through drink that finally became a need.

These street persons are “legless”, putrid and smelly, so this type of community work can be a difficult chore. (I’ve done volunteer work with charities and Mission Beat was one of them, so I know the work involved). I reckon this is just what kids need to see/experience to get an understanding of dangers of drinking and possible outcomes.

Has something happened since I last posted because I can no longer go to Page 4 of this Thread, I can only go as far as Page 3:confused.

I only encounter the problem with THIS thread, because I don't have a problem viewing page four and beyond with any other thread that has four or more pages.

So Steve (and any one else), I cannot see posts after Page 3 to respond.:confused

    Hi LS
    Hope this helps:
At the top of the thread there is a box indicating the page index.

    Highlighting 1 gives you 1 to 20 of 66 threads, 2 gives you 21 to 40 of 66 threads, 3 gives you 41 to 60 of 66 and Last gives 61 to 66 of 66.
    I hope this helps?

    :) G

Thanks Grumbles, but I'm already aware of that and already tried everything you've noted before posting my inquiry. I've even logged in/out, closed browser/cleaned up/back onto browser before getting onto MG and still couldn't bring up Page 4 (which I can on any other thread).

I originally spotted a reply post from Steve_East9 for my thread...when I clicked on it, it went to Page 3!?:confused I could see there were further posts (as you've already noted), but in spite of doing everything above (including what you've stated), still can't see posts.

Actually, now I've noticed I can't see Steve_East9 posts from this thread so I reckon he must have been banned.

    Another one bites the dust.

Had to do some clean up and some previous posts may be messed up. Hiccups like this happen from time to time, it's nothing to worry about.:)

As a follow up, here’s a quick summary of the strategy the government is putting in place to fight binge drinking:
    • Sporting groups and others could be stripped of public funding if they do not make an effort to curb binge drinking among their young. The government will also take sporting organisations' actions on responsible drinking into account in considering other government funding support.

    • television, radio and internet campaigns to shock young people with the consequences of binge drinking.

    • Check effectiveness of campaign in 12 months' time. If not working well, other measures will need to be actioned.

    • Monies towards grants-based program focusing on trying to change the culture that leads young people to binge drinking, at the local level, working with clubs and community groups.

Main thing is that the government is taking active steps and hitting pockets (eg of clubs) for effectiveness of strategy. We'll see how effective this strategy is twelve months down the track. At least the government is now being proactive and also planning ahead if current strategy ineffective.

Hope it works. When we lived further north from here there was a commercial on the radio by a sports bar offering discounts if you bring your studentbody card. I was horrified they would do that. The ad didn't last long, I was going to call the station but heard it change before I could, I suppose other people had the same objection. You spend money for you kid to go to collage and have unscrupulous people making money on them their (more then likely) first time away from home. Thats not good.

It always boils down to the bottom dollar, so that's why Govt is threatening to hit at club pockets. We'll see how we go over the next 12 months.

I remember when at university, there were a few local pubs frequented by students and our uni diary contained a number of different discount coupons (eg for books, travel, clothes, food, drinks, etc), which included drinks at these pubs (similar theme to what you've noted). I dare say these drink discount coupons would now have been stopped by the different faculties.

Just reminded me of two girls who worked at a shop I did and was telling me happy hour is how they ate in collage. They would go hit the buffet put out during that time. I would never think of something like that or have the nerve to do it. :D

Students are pretty resourceful. Great at recycling too (which is a good thing!) When I went full time in last couple of years to finish my degree and later onto College of Law for practicing certificate, I found myself doing the same thing with classmates (never seem to bring enough food with me:D) Never been a drinker though, so I was mainly into my favourite non-alcoholic cocktail (Lemon, Lime & Bitters - Yum...make my own at home now;))

I think binge drinking started as an escape, look back to Dickesian times when you could buy a pint of Gin for a penny, it was a way for the lower classes to escape the drudgery of the day. Life for some parts of society, no matter where you live, an be pretty shitty a lot of the time with huge pressures and financial burdens and little hope on teh horizon of mproving your lot in life. SO the weekends are the only chance you get to kick back and really break free, a bit of drunken debauchery certainly falls into that category.

On top of that I think in europe it has kind of become the new smoking in the way that in the 50s and 60s if you smoked you were "cool" well smokings not "cool" anymore but those people on the other side of the room that are loud and raucous seem to be having a great time right?

I used to party all the time and certainly drank enough on occasions to faill into the binge drinker category. Maybe its bcause I'm older or maybe its becaue I live a much happier less stressful life than I did when I was young but I dont get the "need" to go out drinking like I used to. I can go out and drink a case of beer with my buddies at the dunes over the course of a day in the summer or I can enjoy a galss of wine with a movie or I can not drink at all. In my late teens though f I didn't go out drinking on the weekend, something was up.

It strikes me as strange tough that the governments see this as such a cause for concern yet still let people smoke despite knowing that it kills so many every year and yet by comparison take little action on that front. Whats worse is that their aswer to both solutions seems to be "make as much money off it in taxes and fines as we can while not actually changing any laws or taking positive affirmative steps to stop it"

    Thats my tuppence worth, enjoy

Australia is about to bring in advertising to push that anyone who has 4 Standard drinks in one session is a "Binge" drinker.

All in the hope for better health by controlling your alcohic input. Bazza

Are they defining how long a "session" is? I mean...four drinks in an hour is a LOT different from four drinks over five or six hours.

I guess 4 in an hour. All details are unclear at present. Bazza
