Hi there your best bet is to either get the motherbard model number and version number off of the board and go to the manufacturers website and see if they have the driver download package for XP or sign up with http://www.driverguide.com/ and find the package or missing drivers from there also find out which service pack for XP you are using each supplies differeny information about you hardware!

Obtaining your motherboard ID is a great idea, Driverguide is not, except as a last resort. (They have a tendency to make you go through hoops to get to the needed drivers.)
Your best bet is to go to the PC or motherboard manufacturer's site for the drivers.
If you know the exact make and model number of your PC, post it here. If not download Everest:
Upload the report as an attachment
    Everest: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4181
When Everest is done scanning, click "Report" at the top of the Everest window, click next to get to "Report Profile", select "System Summary only", click next, select "Plain Text", click "Finish". Then when it is done processing, click "Save To File". Save it where you want to. (I would use Desktop.)
Click "Go Advanced" in the MG reply box, scroll down a little way until you see "Manage Attachments", click it, browse to your file, click "Upload", and close the window. Then submit the post. You may have to also type something in the reply box, like, "Here's my report.", so that it will submit.

If you have Recovery or install CD's for that PC, there should be one for drivers and maybe one specifically for sound.

    Hi
I have downloaded Everest as suggested but cannot send report (thick I think)
but have found original invoice from Mesh computers where I bought it from.
The type is poor but it looks like a ARAVON socket A motherboard
AMD Athlon 800 mhz CPU it also says creative SB live 1024.Does this help if not tell me what to look for on the report or I could give you my log in details? Thanks ps the pc was bought in 10/11/2000

Yes, if you could maybe copy and paste the first section of your report and also the part about the motherboard into notepad , save it as a text, and then upload it here that would help. (or copy and paste those sections into a post)
ARAVON socket A motherboard gets me a couple of pages in Japanese and something else with shoes. LOL
Also if you do know the make and model # of your PC, we might be able to work off just that. You should find that on a tag somewhere, maybe on the back or side.
What we need the motherboard ID for is to find your chipset drivers and install them and to also identify what actual audio and video you have.
But here is a SB Live download that may fix the problem, with your audio. Set a restore point first.

Sorry, I wasn't quicker in replying. I know you're trying to get us the info we need, but we really need your PC brand and model #, if it is not a home-built. The motherboard ID is important to be sure we get the right drivers.
Try this again, I had changed it up a little. Maybe, that is why it didn't upload for you.

    Great! :clap That worked fine.
Is there anything, specifically not working that you think should be working?

OK, you report says that you have an ASUS A7V motherboard. (Good to remember for later on)

Anyway looking in the multimedia section of your report it says this:
Multimedia: BrookTree Bt878 Video Capture Device
If you have the driver install CD for that, give it a try.
The only thing I can see at ASUS for your board that is even close to multimedia is this driver:
A7D/G/V Mobile Theater 4.10 for WinXP
Set a Restore point and give that a try also.
I didn't think we would be dealing with add-ons for video when I answered your post rolleyes
Video isn't really my thing but I will PM another member who should be able to help you out.

    Hi
Thanks for that, I do have a problem that the Re-Writer is not working, this was working fine untill I did my xp upgrade, I have been trying to sort that out for weeks and then thought this multi media thing may have been the cause. I do not have a CD(multimedia) with the pc it all came installed.
I will get onto it I take it that I should download the driver you suggest and dlb suggests. I will let you now my progress mean time big thanks.
Ps think I will print out the info on the report for reference.

    Hi
I have found the CD it says VIA Chipstick series, when I put it in it starts to install and then I get the following message. "setup message unable to find the INF source file check the /iswitch on the setup command line" this does not mean a thing to me any thoughts? :confused

    Been busy all day.
Try the drivers on the CD. I'm thinking they are your chipset drivers. (You have a Via chipset on your motherboard) Install them, re-boot, check your Device Manager. If your multimedia no longer shows bad drivers, then we're done, I think.
If it still shows with driver problems, try the 2 drivers, dlb and I suggested.

I have tried putting in the original CD and get this message"setup message unable to find the INF source file check the /iswitch on the setup command line" this does not mean a thing to me any thoughts? I also tried the downloads but they did not install, (I downloaded them but still had the ? marks against multimedia)
sorry to be such a pain but I do want to try and sort it out if I can.

This is the chipset drivers for your board. See if these will install.
    http://www.viaarena.com/Driver/VIA_4in1_443v.zip

To install the driver, save any unsaved work and close all applications then click on the driver download link (above). Choose the "Save File" option and save it to your folder under Windows where you file your drivers. Unzip the file. (To unzip the file right click and highlight "Extract All") Then double click on the Setup.exe file to run the installation program. Follow the prompts and restart at the end of the installation.

    Hi

Still no joy I am afraid, its frustraiting isnt it.:cry I have tried the downloads as suggested but no luck. When I put the CD in it progresses so far and then says "unable to find the INF source file check the /iswitch on the setup command line". I wonder if there is a file missing that is preventing the installation from the disk?
After my last attemp with the downloaded driver I then had a problem with the VIA bus something or other so did a system restore which corrected it.
I will keep trying but I do understand if you have had enough of this thread!
    Thanks anyway.

This is the same sort of problem caused when trying to install printer drivers that are compressed on Win NT install disc.

This is how MS says to resolve that problem.
1.Copy the files from the I386 folder on the Windows NT 3.5 CD-ROM to a hard disk location (such as Winnt\Inf).
2.At a command prompt, switch to the folder containing the files you copied.
    3.Expand the Printer.in_ file to Printer.inf.
To expand the Printer.in_ file, type expand printer.in_ printer.inf.

Could you a post a screenshot of what is on your VIA disc? If there is a folder on it that says drivers, open it and then take the screenshot. Maybe I can figure it out.

And I have dealt with longer threads and worse problems. I don't give up until I totally run out of ideas or get too far beyond my experience.;)

No, sorry, that's my fault. I posted that as an example of a similar problem, not as a fix for you to try.
I want to see if there is a .in file on your VIA disc, so that we can do a similar fix like this, but it will more than likely be Driver.in_ (or something close to that) instead of Printers.in_

It looks like the problem IS on the disc, as far as installing goes. Those drivers do not include versions for XP. And it may explain why the Acer drivers didn't work. I don't remember if the OS was stated on the page for your PC model.
Try this driver and see if it works, fixing your multimedia video controller issue.
    ATI Graphics driver for WinXP

Do you have sound? I suspect the other multimedia to be your sound.

Do you think I have done the wrong thing trying to upgrade to XP? Do I need to purchase a new piece of hardware? :cry
    ps thanks for your time.

  28. musksnipe

    musksnipe Guest

I don't know if there are problems going from Win 98 to XP on an Acer. I checked back at Acer and the drivers for your motherboard (on the similar model) are all XP. The ASUS drivers are XP. One or the other should have stuck.

Either you had an imperfect OS install or there is an application preventing you from installing the drivers. Sometimes an anti-virus application will mess with installs. Try installing that last driver, again with your AV off.
You have a lot of applications installed, the drivers should have been installed before them. It is really hard to tell if one of them may be affecting the install of the missing drivers.

If you have the XP disc, you used to reinstall your OS, you can try fixing files that may not have installed properly. Insert your XP disc. Close the Auto-Start if it opens.
    Goto Start>Run and type cmd
That will open a command window. Type sfc /SCANNOW
This will check all your Windows files for corrupt or missing ones and replace or repair them. It will not alter your personal files. When it is done running (about 15 minutes) try uninstalling the two multimedias and then shutting down completely and re-starting again.

And that brings up one more question.
When you installed XP did you re-format the hard drive during the install?

  29. cyberchick

    cyberchick Private First Class

    Hi
I have ran the scannow with the xp disk, uninstalled the multimeadia devices and closed then opened the pc message reads New Hardware Found.
I click on install and am asked for the CD disk this I put in and get message "Cannot Install This Hardware" the wizard cannot find the necessary software.

I have cleared the INF file required problem ( after file check)now but still not right.
I feel as if its just something I am not completeing correctly and my brain is dizzy thinking what it could be.

By the way in Device Manager I now have one ? against multimedia controller, whereas before I had 2 then lower in the list I get exclamation markagainst multimedia video controller.
This seems like some progress (this after downloading the SB Live driver)
Many thanks I will now go take a pill!!

It seems like we're almost there but we are missing something.
Your report shows the Sound Blaster card as audio and the BrookTree Bt878 Video Capture Device as the multimedia audio. I don't know if they conflict. (This is something I haven't dealt with before)
I looked back through the thread and I don't see where BIOS was mentioned. Onboard sound HAS to be disabled in order for your sound card to work.
As the PC starts, press one of these keys (here is a list by manufacturer) I think yours would be the "Del" key.
    http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/bios_manufacturer.htm
Or the right key will be posted on the very first screen. Tap it until you enter set-up, then look for your audio (it should be in Advanced or in Integrated Peripherals) Make sure sound is set correctly. (Disabled or off, whichever choice you get.)
When exiting the BIOS make sure to "Save changes and exit."

Now that we have run SFC, try installing your chipset driver again.

    Hi :(
This is so frustrating you must be totaly sick of me now!
I went into BIOS and changed from auto to dissabled and tried unsuccesfully to download the drivers again. No joy! I just keep getting the same box telling me New Hardware Found only to get message when I run it that wizard cannot find software. I have dissabled AV.
I can't think what to do, know it sounds daft but could I replace this multimedia controller with a different one? Also what exactly does this device do?
    Thanks for your patience

LOL No this is what I do. I know how frustrating it is not to have a PC running properly.

The multimedia controller should be your sound. Do you have sound?
The other is your video controller.
I asked before, are you having problems with these, other than the Device Manager entries?

    Updating through Hardware Wizard
Right click either multimedia device in Device Manager. Choose Update driver,
Choose "No, not this time" on the first window of the Hardware Wizard, click Next.
Choose "Install from a list or specific location", click Next.
Choose "Don't search, I will choose the driver to install", click Next.
    Click "Have disc".
Then browse to the proper driver. (They would have to be downloaded again, if you have deleted them)

Thanks for sticking with it, I am going to be away for a couple of days easter break, when I get back I will go through everything you have suggested and check what is and is not working and get back to you.
You did ask if I did an upgrade and yes this was what I had done. I had never done anything like this before and thought it was the least problematic but I dont think it has turned out that way, If the problem persists maybe I should have another go and clean the disk and start again, it is just such a hassle sorting out internet conections and my network things.
I will be in touch soon but many thanks for all your imput I mean to carry on and eventualy get it sorted, I am sure I will with a little help.
    Happy Easter :)

    Hi
Sorry that this post is so long coming,I had to take a break and let my head clear.
I have been going over all the things I have done and tried and wonder if the problem has been from when I first upgraded the pc from Win 98 to Win XP professional. I was very unsure what to do and in what sequence things needed installing and this is where I may have messed up.
    1. Should I have formatted the hard drive (ithink thats what I mean) and if so what drivers and order should I re-install.
    2. What settings should I save, and when do I install those.

Do you think that this may be the answere if so I will try it
Hope you have not lost interest or the will to live over this !!!!

Thanks for coming back and adding that link. It will certainly help someone.
And it will help me, now that I understand what, how, and why the BrookTree Device was there for.
