Downloaded the latest Firefox the other day on this new Vista desktop, but haven't been able to use it: "Server timed out." Is there a compatibilty problem or fix?
    Thanx

Can you give more details, like:

    -trying to access which site
-what version of firefox are you using
-did it have firefox installed before
-is this the first time you have accessed the computer and used it with your own profile or are you on somebody else profile
-do you have any firewall software installed that could need to be configured because this is the first time you logged on this computer

Can you just give more details in general, thanks.

    TY for your responses.
    Firefox wasn't pre-installed.
Version: 1.8.20061.1023 downloaded from Mozilla site 3-9-08
This is a home pc - I'm the only user.
Firewall: Win Defender & Norton. Norton set to allow firefox.

Win defender may be blocking the application. You should be able to scroll through a list of applications and check that Firefox is allowed through.

Also, I would try turning Windefender and Norton both off. If Firefox works, then turn one back on at a time. That will help you determine if it is either of these that are causing the problem.

Also, you can try turning off the Windows Firewall service and see if that will let you through.

Is this a work computer or home computer? If it is a work computer, you may be being block by a proxy or something that have set in place to only allow you to use IE.

Don;t know where you got that version from exactly on Mozilla as it has long been V2.0. Try updating to the latest version first http://www.majorgeeks.com/download2248.html

I believe they got it form the Help About screen. But I believe that is the version of the OS not the version of Firefox.

    Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1.12) Gecko/20080201 Firefox/2.0.0.12

Thank you all for your help.
    Firefox 2.0
Seems to be functioning properly now, though I haven't done anything.

I'll tell you what I think happened. On an update to FF or a new install, on the first connection FF will attempt to go to the Mozilla site to let you know you're running the latest version of FF. The problem is, that if the site is down or very crowded because lots of people have updated/upgraded, you can't get to the site and it appears that the browser is broken.
Keep that thought in the back of your mind the next time you upgrade or update and on first launch you get nothing or an error.
