HI, I have got similar problems with my ACER Travelmate 244LC (see attached report on details). I assume it was XP SP2 causing to lose the proper audio (it used to work before that upgrading). I tried to change driver, upgrade various drivers with no success. Thanks for yr support.

Let's start off with the Acer drivers. Their site won't let me copy the download links, so you will have to go there and input your info to get to the drivers. Input the Model as a Travelmate 240. The 244 doesn't show up in their listing but both use the same motherboard.
Download the Intel chipset driver (install this first) and the audio driver.

Let me know how that works (or doesn't work for you)
If you downgraded from Vista to Xp, the audio driver may not work.

The drivers are seemingly the same as the ones of the install cd with the ACER. I reinstalled as you asked, still no sound. I use XP as original software.

When checking audio, I got a message: Windows cannot play the following file - giving the link to windows wav files. Also says to replace the original files and restart again.

Check Device Manager: Start>Control Panel> System. On the Hardware tab, click Device Manager, then click the plus sign in front of Sound, Video, Game Controllers.
In Device Manager, if there is a ? in front of your audio device, that means no audio driver is installed.
A ! means driver installation attempted but with problems.

If you have no problems in Device Manager, than the problem my be with the files themselves.

Device Manager does not show any type of problem. Is there any hope to proceed?

You have absolutely no sound? Can you play CD's or hear sound from online sources? Have you any MP3 files you can test? Or is it just the .wav files you've tested with that have no sound?

Absolutely no sound. All drivers installed, no installation mistake - no sound either. I still assume XP SP2 to cause/mismatch drivers...

Ok, there are a few other things we can try.

Is the Windows Audio service running?

    Go to Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Services
Scroll down the list of services until you find the Windows Audio service.
Right click on it and choose Properties.
Make sure it is set to Automatic and Start is checked.

I noticed this in your report:
    --------[ Windows Audio ]-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    mixer.0 0000 0000 Mixer through TotalRecorder
    wave-in.0 0000 0000 Record through TotalRecorder
    wave-out.0 0000 0000 Playback through TotalRecorder

    TotalRecorder
Is this an app that you can uninstall, then reinstall later?
This may be your issue. I am not familiar with it, but it's possible the settings may not be set properly in your options for it.
Go to Control Panel>Sounds and Audio Devices.
Look in the Audio Tab, what is set as Default device? What are your other choices?
Look in the Voice tab, what is set as Default device? What are your other choices?
Look in the Hardware tab, check (highlight) each device to see if they are working properly.

Back in the Control Panel, is there a TotalRecorder icon?

Windows Audio Service is running, was set to automatic and started.

I uninstalled Total Audio Recorder (when I installed it, I thought its driver may be used instead of the non-working windows audio drivers).

I rebooted the computer. Now There is no default audio, no default voice. I checked all items under hardware tab and all are OK. Regarding the other tabs, there isn't any other option to chose from. Thanks for getting deeper, waiting for your further ideas.

Since you removed that app, it wouldn't hurt to run CCleaner, both the Cleaner and Registry.

I think this will put your default devices back.
In Control Panel, double-click Add New Hardware.
Click Next, click No, and then click Next.
In the Hardware Types box, click Sound, Video, And Game Controllers.
For MCI devices, click Microsoft MCI in the Manufacturers box, click the model you want in the Models box, and then click Next.
    Select these.
    CD Audio Device
    MIDI Sequencer Device
    Wave Audio Device
    Click the Finish button.
