I just built a new machine using the P5KC. Windows XP loaded fine with service pack 2, but I get no sound. Every time I try to update the Realtek audio driver, I get an error message saying the update was unable to be completed. I have the Realtek HD Audio manager in my system tray, and it will play the 3d Audio demo sounds, but Windows wav files and regular audio do not play, and my control panel settings say there is no sound device installed

Is the Windows Audio service running?
    Go to Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Services
Scroll down the list of services until you find the Windows Audio service.
Right click on it and choose Properties.
Make sure it is set to Automatic and Start is checked.

Are the motherboard drivers installed/updated? This can also cause a problem with audio and other devices.

It's possible not everything below will be in your system to do but follow through and perform any steps you can.
    1) Uninstall the Realtek software through Add/Remove Programs
    2) In Device Manager, remove the High Definition audio device (or the unknown device, if there is one) under Sound, Video & Game controllers.
    3) Go into Device Manager>System, right click the UAA Hi-Def Bus driver.
Disable the device and then uninstall it. (Do not re-boot yet)
    KB888111
If you install, remove, and then re-install this update, the update is no longer listed in Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel. Therefore, you cannot remove this update from your computer. To work around this problem, follow these steps.
    1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
    2. Locate and then click the following subkey in the registry:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Updates\Windows XP\SP2\KB888111
    3. On the Edit menu, click Delete.
    4. Click Yes, and then exit Registry Editor.
Run CCleaner, both the Cleaner and Registry.

    Install your driver:
Realtek ALC883 Audio Driver V5.10.0.5390 for Windows XP
Do a complete shut down and re-boot.
