I am trying to remove winreanimator from a friend's pc. I tried following "READ & RUN ME FIRST Malware Removal Guide". I got as far as the "Windows XP Cleaning Procedure. I downloaded "SUPERAntiSpyware" but it would not install.
I downloaded "SpyBot - Search & Destroy". That installed but would not run.
    Now what? :confused

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please try installing and running SUPERAntispyware from safe boot mode. Also try running ComboFix while in safe boot mode. Whether these work or not, reboot into normal boot mode and then move all the way down to the MGtools procedure as this has always worked. Then attach all the logs that you were able to get. This should be at least the MGlogs.zip file. With MGlogs.zip we will be able to get started on a fix.

See the new instructions for using ComboFix to where we renamed the combofix.exe file to cf.exe

    Refer to this: Running ComboFix

You still have a lot of malware problems! Let's try to make our manual cleaning steps much easier.

Please run this: Using SDFix and attach the requested log.

Now see if you can run this Using BitDefender Online Scan and follow the instructions exactly as written to produce a log to attach.

Now let's also fix a major problem that is leaving your PC very unsecure. We will install a firewall now. Please download and install this: PC Tools AntiVirus Free Edition

Now uninstall this: My Way Search Assistant

    Now reboot your PC

Note your previous ComboFix log reveals that all of the below are infected and will have to be uninstalled or deleted.
Note that you have multiple antivirus programs installed. You must uninstall all but one.

Now we need to use ComboFix to remove a bunch of malware files.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Now run Ccleaner!

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it.

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

You said I need to install a firewall and you gave a link to:pC Tools AntiVirus Free Edition. That's the antivirus program right? I have recently installed AVG. Should I uninstall AVG? If I uninstall AVG and install PC Tools Antivirus Free Edition, should I also install Commodo Firewall Pro for the firewall?

I have run all requested files and installed PC Tools Firewall Plus. I could not delete "My Way Search Assistant" from the Add/Remove Programs. It gave the following error message:
"Can't remove specified module could not be found".

I have attached all logs. Let me know if there is still an infection.

You forgot to attach the log from SDfix. Please attach it.

OKay then we will manually removed it.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
    Now uninstall the below programs.
    LiveUpdate 3.0 (Symantec Corporation)
    xBar
    • Click on Start, then Run ... type services.msc into the box that opens up, and press 'OK'.
    • On the page that opens, scroll down to Symantec Core LC
    • then right click the entry, select Properties and press Stop Service.
    • When it shows that it is stopped, next please set the Start-up Type to 'Disabled'.
    • Click OK until you get back to Windows.
Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

NOTE: Some of the items below in the fix for HijackThis may no longer be seen after doing above steps. If not seen, just ignore and continue.

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it. This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Companion\Installs\cpn1\yt.dll (file missing)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now we need to use ComboFix to remove a bunch of malware files.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
    • Don't forget the SDfix log from the previous fix.
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

After attaching the above logs, DO NOT power down or reboot your PC. Keep it running until you hear back from me.

I have attached the SDfix log, as you requested.

I am starting to follow the directions from your last post. I follow up when I am finished.

Okay and when you finish with those steps, please run SDfix again and then attach the new log from it. If you look at the previous log from SDfix you will see it is mentioning the same items I mentioned back in message # 6 as being infected. If these are still infected, you will have to uninstall these programs and then reboot and reinstall any that you really need/use. It would be a good idea to decide right now if you actually use any of these. For example, many PCs ship with Music Match Jukebox on them but I'm not sure too many people really use the program when there are so many free great alternatives.

I've completed everything. Please see the latest attachments. Everything seems to run ok but I am not sure if there are any lingering infected files. Let me know what to do next. I will keep the pc on as you previously requested.

Yes there is one more still infected. It is for your HP printer. The below file needs to be deleted:

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\drivers\w32x86\3\hpztsb11.exe

After deleting this your logs will be clean; however, you will get an error message at reboot since this process trys to load at startup. You can fix this by having HijackThis (analyse.exe) fix the below line:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HPDJ Taskbar Utility] C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\drivers\w32x86\3\hpztsb11.exe

I'm not exactly sure if you really need this or not. It is some kind of diagnostic and maintenance driver for your HP Deskjet printer. You could just reinstall the HP software after fixing the above if you wind up needing it.

After you fix the above and if you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix then UNINSTALL COMBOFIX (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN
      • Now type combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
      • Note: The space between the X and the /U, it must be there.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used SmitFraudFix, you can delete all files and folders related to it now including the c:\rapport.txt log.
    5. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    6. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    7. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    8. If we had you run RenV.exe, you can delete it and the Log.txt file on your Desktop.
    9. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    10. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    11. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    12. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    13. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

I deleted the hp file and the reg key. However, AVG antivirus will not update. I uninstalled it and reinstalled but it still won't update. The update button opened the clock. What should I do?

  18. OQRDT2

I have uninstalled AVG Antivirus for good. I installed Comodo Antivirus and it ran and allowed for updates. I also installed Spyware Terminator and updated it as well. I did complete scans with both programs and they came back clean. I also uninstalled the programs that you told me to uninstall. Everything seems to be running clean now.

On behalf of my friend Charlene and her family, thanks for helping me clean their pc. I appreciate the time that you spent analyzing the files and logs that I submitted. Thanks.
