New Laptop, lots of demo software

So my wife and I just purchased a new Dell Inspiron 1526. When we purchased it at Bestbuy, the associate said for an additional 30 bucks that they could remove all of the demo software and registry items that comes with it. I said I would be able to do it. Now that we have it at home, the Vista platform and its software are unfamiliar to me. We currently have about 68 processes running, which seems really high.

I have been here many times and you guys always seem to help me out. So I imagine identifying different programs and removing un-needed programs from my PC and registry shouldn't be a problem.

    Thanks guys!

Flippin' criminals - you can actually request the machine come with no additional software from dell. (Anyway, end rant)

You may want to check out PC De-crapifier (formerly DELL Decrapifier) that will automatically remove a lot of preinstalled software from major OEMs.

Yeah it is lame. I laughed at the guy and I said, can't we just get a stock PC without all that crap. He said no.

Thanks for the reply, my next question before executing is do you have a definition list that describes what each program does? There may be a few options I might want to keep.

    Thanks man!

This program only helped me remove 5 programs. I imagine that there are more trial versions on here then that. Any help

Thanks for the decrapifier, great program.

some tools that helped me were ccleaner from:

    http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4191.html

    and spybot from

    http://www.majorgeeks.com/download2471.html

both of them have registry cleaners, and boot program list- so you can select programs you dont want to start when windows start. (you can normally do this with windows- without a program for it- but i find it easier because its a icon.

i run them 1-2 times a week and it has helped alot. Cleans the registry, select/deselct startup programs, etc.

    Hi

To maybe find some of the installed applications that Dell will have installed that you maybe able to remove as they may not be worthwile or software that would be used, is to once installed CCleaner, click Tools > Uninstall and down the bottom right side is "save to text file" click that and save the uninstall/install list to a file then attach* that file to your post, we could then advise you on what some of the software is a does and you can decide if your going to use it or not.

A little late for you, I suppose, but when I recently bought a Dell laptop I went with one advertised for small business (Vostro) because I could get it with XP instead of Vista. As an unexpected bonus, it came with zero demo programs or other garbage.

I have used CCleaner to delete startup programs and used the software from the first replay. My task bar is low and everything seems to be running quick.

I have 64 processes running. Does Vista just use more processes than XP? I know with XP I have about 38 running.
