Hello, brand new to these forums, but an old fan to the site. ^^

Anyway, I have this...very odd problem. A week or so ago, my computer went insane, giving me Generic host, wuauclt.exe, svchost.exe, etc errors...Any time I tried to play a game, the graphics would go crazy on me. They'd become jagged and stretched across the screen, and flicker randomly everywhere. After trying many different solutions, I eventually gave up and reinstalled Windows on my 2nd hard drive. I would've simply reformatted, but I have far too many files that would've been rather devastating to have deleted. (Getting an external hard drive just for backing up very soon.)

So, after reinstalling, everything went fine for awhile.....Until I installed Microsoft Office XP 2003 from an old Office CD I had lying around. Suddenly, I began receiving wuauclt errors, generic hosts errors...and my games began crashing and acting odd once again. At that point in time, I didn't think it was office doing this, since, on my old hard drive, I had Office XP installed for years.

After a ton of system restores, chkdsks, etc., I finally fixed it.

Now we come to today....I reinstalled Office XP, and it happened again. Obviously this is when I figured out it was Office XP doing this. I uninstalled it, and now everything's working fine.

I would simply keep it uninstalled, but that is not a choice. I'm a writer, and I've grown accustomed to Office XP's Word. I really need to have it installed...or at least, a VERY GOOD substitute. By VERY GOOD, I mean a near duplication of Word...

Though that is an option, I would be much more inclined to simply fixing this problem. Would anyone here happen to know what I should do? I want my Office back....

    Thank you in advance.

I apologize for double-posting, but it seems the problem came back....

Even with uninstalling Office, I'm still getting weird graphical problems and crashes on games...and i'm getting odd errors and etc...

Now I've no idea what to do. I guess I'll try a system restore now.

Any help would be very appreciated.

Hi Victor and Welcome to Majorgeeks,

I've been reading about your problem, was not logged in. Think it might be windows updates causing, try this as a temp fix.

Start > My Computer (right click) > Properties > Automatic Updates - check "turn off", then click OK

Then go to the Event Viewer and see if you can find an error in Application Log (red) and post the error here.

How to use the Event Viewer, if you need it:

    Is your operating system XP-SP2?
Are your updates up to date?
Have you had any malware recently?
    Is the Office CD registered?

Thanks for the welcome. Here are all of the most current errors...I'll put them in "Quotes" to make it easier to read:

Those are the latest ones....TuneUpDefrag is part of "Tuneup Utilities 2008", a very good tuneup utility...sadly it's not helping at this time either.

I have not had any malware recently, and I don't believe my Office was registered. As for being up to date, I am also unsure of this either, but I'm checking right now. And yes, I'm running XP SP2.

EDIT: No high priority updates available, so yes, I'm fully up to date.

I have to run to the store, so I'll check back here when I come back. Thank you for your help so far.

Thanks again, but sadly that update did not help. In fact, I just recieved a "Generic Host Process for Win32 Services" error.

    Here's the error report:

    Here is the appcompat.txt

I'm not sure how to open the svchost.exe.mdmp file, so I shall add it as an attachment.

I'd also like to add the graphical problem...Here is a picture of one of the games I play:

    http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y127/VictorAlkaiser/Error.jpg

You can see in the background a few long, splintery jagged edges...Now take a look at that, and try to imagine those splinters filling the screen constantly, flickering in and out. This was the only picture I can get before it crashed.

Here are 2 more pictures from another game:

    http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y127/VictorAlkaiser/Error1.jpg

I've no idea why this is happening, but it seems to happen right after generic host or wuauclt.exe errors...

I hope all this information helps in fixing this problem...Thanks in advance to any who can help.

Please post logs as attachments, just messes up the search engine a Admin will remove the appcompat.txt file. You did not mention registering MS Office, did you try to do so? Think graphic is a different issue, maybe a driver, a MG will review your post and take over. Good Luck

Thanks, and I'll add appcompat.txt as an attachment next time, my apologies.

As for MS Office, I have it uninstalled at this moment in time. It is not on my computer, so shouldn't be affecting anything right now.

Apologies for double posting, but I would be grateful for anymore help. I'm still getting errors...and I've done everything I could think of.

I've cleaned my registry of its 122 errors...reinstalled my graphics drivers...did another chkdsk...nothing's working...

*smiles* we were all new members at one time, so no need for a apology, my earlier posts make Admins/Mods cringe. (the last few might too)

I'm guessing your problem is two part...one being the unregistered Office and the other being a graphics problem, but I'm not advanced enough to solve. I see you uninstalled Office, you're still having a problem with graphics? Please post your specs if so.

    Example:
    XP Home EditionService Pack 2
    Intel Celeron, 2400 MHz (24 x 100)
    Dell Dimension 2400
    Intel(R) 82845G/GL/GE/PE/GV Graphics Controller (64 MB)
    3D Accelerator Intel Extreme Graphics
    2 G memory

Note: We can't help you with unregistered/licensed software due to legal issues that could effect the owners of this site.

Also, please be patient most of us are sleeping now, some will be up in 3-4 hours.

Also might want to read these re setting your graphics for this game. Graphics are set at a min. default and you have to play with them, like set flooring to min.

I apologize for taking so long to answer. Life caught me in its clutches, and my internet connection went down for a bit. Anyway...

Heh, I've played Perfect World for almost a year, both Malaysian and Chinese versions, not to mention a private server for it. My computer can easily handle Perfect World, and only stutters in towns on the highest settings. The other game is called Second Life, which I also had no real problems...it definitely lags on my computer, but never gave me such crazy graphical problems.

But I do believe I figured out what was wrong....It was my RAM.

After getting really peeved at my computer, I unplugged it and dismantled it, taking out my graphics card and RAM sticks. As I was taking out the last RAM stick (I have 3: two 256's and one 512), I noticed one of its RAM slot's holders was broken...Bah, not sure what to call it...It's the little white things at each end of the RAM slot that clicks in place to hole the RAM stick down when plugged in....Anyway...

It was broken, so I came to the conclusion that the RAM stick that was situated in that slot may have jiggled out of place at some point in time, thus perhaps corrupting the RAM it gave (it was one of the 256 sticks).

After inspecting all of the items I pulled out and giving them a thorough cleaning, I plugged them back in, making sure the last stick was plugged in completely (I had a good amount of trouble with it, since the broken part found itself situated in a way that blocked the stick from plugging in completely). After that, I turned on my computer and have had no problems at all...Haven't reinstalled Office yet, though I don't think it'll be giving me any problems either.

I may have found my solution, but if it happens again you can bet that I'll post here...You guys came to my aid very quickly, and I thank you for that.

Let's hope I never have to post here again....if you catch my drift. :p
