FYI: I did check a handful of topics and none seem to apply to my problem.

I purchased an NVidia FX 5200 PCI graphics card around October of 2007. It worked fine until about two days ago. All of a sudden, now the monitor goes into 'power safe mode' right after boot. It's a Dell flat panel with a green Power On/Off button that changes to amber once the monitor goes into power safe mode.

The only way I can get it to work is by booting Windows in safe mode.

What I have done so far:

    - Booted in safe mode, uninstall the driver for the card. Rebooted, installed latest driver. Right in the middle of the driver install, the light goes amber. Did this several times.
    - Try changing the resolution to the lowest possible. Light goes amber.
    - Pulled the card, cleaned it, reinstalled, repeated above. Nothing.

I built my own machine and it runs on WinXP. Motherboard is an ECS K7S5A.

Any help would be truly appreciated. Thanks.

Have you tried updateing/reloading the drivers? There used to be a Driver Cleaner in the download section here at MG for Nvidia cards to help purge the old drivers before reloading the new ones but I can't find it.

Can you access your BIOS and view the BIOS screens on your monitor? Is that the primary/only video installed in your computer? I believe your BIOS requires that PCI be set as the primary video card; I have a K7S5A PRO motherboard and I'm assuming the K7S5A is the same in this respect. If you can access your BIOS settings, verify that PCI is set as the primary video card, just in case your CMOS battery may be failing and not retaining your BIOS settings.

Other troubleshooting steps could include trying the monitor on another computer to verify it's not the problem, and installing the video card in another computer to test it.

Have you ever used an AGP card in that computer? Why are you using a PCI card?

    I'll try this. Thanks.

I, too, have not been able to find the link for driver cleaner pro, on MG anymore...a search pulls up a page, but nothing on it. here is a link to get the free program:

run it in safe mode, then make sure you download the appropriate driver for your card...Im not sure the latest driver will support that card, you may have to go back a few versions. Try downloading the drivers from the card manufacturers website.

Tried this. Didn't work. Will see if checking the BIOS will do the trick. :(

If you have on-board video (and I think you do if you're using a PCI video card) try powering down, unplugging the power cord, and removing the FX5200. Plug the monitor into the on board video and power up. When you get to your desktop, completely remove your NVidia drivers and run CCleaner on your HD and registry. Reboot again using the on-board video and download the newest drivers for your video card. Reboot again but this time go into your BIOS and set the video to init the PCI slot first and make sure the power saving settings are disabled (you can set them in Windows). Save your BIOS changes and exit, then power down before Windows boots. Unplug the power cord and install the FX5200. Boot up and install the driver you just downloaded. I'm pretty sure this will take care of everything if the FX card is still healthy.
