problems renaming ComboFix - R&RM first

I am currently going through the Read & Run Me First instructions to try and resolve some malware issues and have come up with an issue while trying to rename ComboFix.exe to cf.exe as per How to Properly Run ComboFix. I am going through the Windows XP Cleaning Procedure.
I shut down Comodo BOClean 4.25, shut down AVG Free and Zonealarm but the message I receive is:
Error Renaming File or Folder - Cannot rename Combofix: It is being used by another person or program.

Am I missing something? I have encountered no problems thus far with viruses/malware up to this point. Superantispyware and Spybot revealed no threats :)

    Thanks

Try renaming it after a reboot. Nothing should be using it unless you are already running it or it never finished running from a previous run. Did you already try running it as ComboFix.exe? If so, that may be why you are now having a problem. You could also try deleting and redownloading and renaming. Also you could try renaming in safe boot mode.

I will delete it and re-download it. Just tried renaming it after reboot :(

Make sure you don't have it set to Read-Only.

I have 2 icons. 1 is the original Combofix.exe application (blank page) and 2 is a MSDS icon which is the Shortcut to combofix. Should I try renaming this one? Or as you suggest I me have run it in error.
Unable to delete the icon from the desktop :(

Update: Safe mode renaming incomplete. Same message as normal mode.
Downloaded Combofix, renamed as combofix1.exe and saved this to the desktop. (remember I cannot delete the original Combofix) and altered the command in Start-Run-Command to include the same file.
    Attaching logfile here :)

The reason I started the Read & Run me First was because the virus JS\Psyme kept getting picked up by my AVG scans.

You need to only have one item on your Desktop, the file Combofix and it needs to be named cf.exe as requested in the READ ME. There should be no other files or shortcuts related to ComboFix.

You need to complete the rest of the instructions in the READ ME if you wish us to determine if you are clean.

Please attach the requested log from SUPERAntispyware.

    Delete the below files.
    C:\13.tmp
    C:\4.tmp
    C:\Program Files\ComboFix.exe
    C:\Documents and Settings\Steve\Local Settings\Temp\DIO4.tmp

Also if you wish to keep the below files, move them somewhere else as they don't belong here.
    Code:
    2007-11-12 23:29 1,284,112 ----a-w C:\Program Files\CBO_Setup_4.25.exe
    2007-10-28 15:01 28,556,584 ----a-w C:\Program Files\avg75free_488a1138.exe
    2007-10-27 19:24 13,411,824 ----a-w C:\Program Files\Google_Earth_BZXD.exe
Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it. This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {0BF43445-2F28-4351-9252-17FE6E806AA0} - (no file)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_05\bin\jusched.exe"
    O9 - Extra button: Sky - {08E730A4-FB02-45BD-A900-01E4AD8016F6} - http://www.sky.com (file missing)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Also are you still having problems?

    Hi Chas
I have followed all your instructions successfully except one which refused to delete : C:\Program Files\ComboFix.exe

My sound disappeared and autoplay function has gone awol, all since malware scans :(
Musksnipe is helping me resolve these issues in the Drivers Forum :)

    Is my system Malware free?

Try renaming it to something else (like FOO.BAK). Then try moving it to your Desktop. See if you can then delete it from your Desktop.

Have you ever seen this: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...B6-E8FA-45C4-A171-1B389CFACDAD&displaylang=en

    Based on your logs, yes!

What was the TriJinx stuff that ComboFix removed from your Downloaded Program Files folder (which by the way was not a proper place for all of that to be stored)?

I ahave no idea! My wife downloaded some scrapbooking pictures from Daisies.com. I have never heard of Trijinks!

That's strange. It is not a protected file and it is 0 bytes in size and not in use. Try the below.

Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Do not change any check box options!!
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:
    • Now click the Execute button.
    • Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    • Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    • Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

Looks like Avenger has worked :) Thank you.

Should I toggle system restore now and reverse 'show hidden files' ?

I have downloaded the Autofix.exe for the autoplay issue and it has repaired some files, so fingers crossed.

    You're welcome.

The below will take care of all of this.

If you get them deleted without any problems then your logs are all clean and you can move on to the below.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. Uninstall COMBOFIX (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop & renamed it like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter cmd and click OK to open a command prompt
      • Type cd Desktop at the command prompt and hit enter.
      • The prompt should change to show you are on at your Desktop folder now.
      • Now type cf /u and hit the enter key which should run ComboFix's uninstaller.
        • Note: The space between the cf and the /U, it must be there.
    2. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    3. If we used SmitFraudFix, you can delete all files and folders related to it now including the c:\rapport.txt log.
    4. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    5. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    6. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    7. If we had you run RenV.exe, you can delete it and the Log.txt file on your Desktop.
    8. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    9. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    10. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    11. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    12. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

All is well Chas :) Thanks again.

Only thing that came up was in AVG scan I did after enabling System restore was a alert about a change regarding Host file?
    File: hosts
    Result: change
    Path: C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

Is this to do with trying to repair the Autoplay? Or anything to worry about?

This normal since your host file is access via protection software all the time. Spybot for example will add things to it when you use Immunize.
