Are you participating? Don't know whether this is at 8pm local times, or 8pm Australian time, all over the World. 10 hours earlier at GMT (UK) time for example.

Strong backing from the City of Sydney and its Lord Mayor, Clover Moore, helped to make Earth Hour 2008 an international event.

As of 18 March, over 9000 businesses and 136,000 individuals had indicated their intention to participate at earthhour.org.

Earth Hour 2008 will include the following "partner cities". (check out link above)

I was just having an argument with a few people on another forum about this. Their plans included loading the dishwasher and clothes dryer and turning up the hot water heater. Their defense was political disdain for Al Gore.

I am not a fan of Mr. Gore's, but can creating awareness for conservation and climate change really be a political issue?? In this day and age when we are facing rising energy costs globally and tensions are mounting between western and middle eastern countries over fossil fuels, dismissing this issue as political BS is irresponsible at best!

I hope they enjoy the gas mileage they get out of their Hummers!!

    /rant

p.s. No real offense to Hummer owners, I just wouldn't drive one.

By now, anyone turning off unnecessary lights for Earth Hour will have passed through the UK and heading for the USA.

Haven't heard a great deal about it in OZ yet. Just traffic jams on a mountain overlooking Brisbane, Queensland. I guess today's Sunday papers will be full of before and after examples. Bazza

Yeh I will be trying to do my bit. I just loved the way that Google turned their homepage black :) Good to see the 'big guys' leading by example.

Yep, started in one city (Sydney, NSW, Australia) in 2007 and now spreading around the World. One hour, in itself, is a "token" gesture when compared to 365 days a year, 24 hours a day but the main point is to get homes and businesses turning off unnecessary lights (and stand-by appliances) every day of the year. It all seems so pointless our Gov has just opened a new huge terminal at Heathrow airport,I think the best thing I could have done for earth hour is go to the new terminal shoot half the employee's and set fire to a few airbus A380's,that aught to slow them down for a while.

All the fossil fuels will be used up at an ever increasing rate theres nothing we can do to stop it,sure we make people more aware that its running out but it won't change anything.

    I didn't do anything BTW.

Ontario Canada had a %5 drop in electricity comsumption during the hour, so there is some awareness amongst the public.

I have offset my carbon emissions.

My grass is now being officially allowed to grow to 1 inch longer than formerly.
