    MedioN MD8822 Desktop
Vista pre installed. Installed xp pro sp2, used paragon boot manager.
I have not yet had sound through speakers. Only bleeps from tower.

When I run xp a ballon states, "found new hardware, MEDIA". Then I get the update hardware wizard..cannot install this hardware follows.

In device manager 1 exclamation mark next to unknown device under sound, video & game controllers and another next to microsoft uaa bus driver for high def audio.

Right clicking & choosing to update or scan for hardware changes ends with cannot install this hardware.

The realtek driver seems to be installed.
I have previously uninstalled the microsoft uaa driver but that didn't help.:confused

    1. Boot into Safe Mode
    2. Open Device Manager
    3. Go to System devices
    4. Disable (DO NOT UNINSTALL) the Microsoft UAA driver.
    5. Reboot into Safe Mode again (This is so that driver will not load)
    6. Open Device Manager
    7. Go to System devices
    8. Now... uninstall the Microsoft UAA driver. This should also remove the Realtek audio.
(If it doesn't, uninstall it from Add/Remove Programs)
    9. Reboot to Windows XP (normal boot).
    10. Do not let Windows install your drivers. Say "No" to the New Hardware Wizard.
    11. Run CCleaner, both the Cleaner and Registry.

    Install the driver Dan suggested.

I believe the First one. Click the link that says, 'Click here to begin free download." It is a .zip file with a setup.exe file. Double click that file, once you have them extracted.

The setup should provide you with the right driver for your system.

PS. the floaty things were an April Fools prank played by one owner of the site on the other.

Right I have booted into XP in safe mode disabled UAA hd bus driver, rebooted in safe mode uninstalled UAA driver. Still a yellow exclamation next to unknown device under sound, video and game controllers?
Uninstalled realtek hd audio then rebooted in normal mode and ran ccleaner.

The VIA setup said we can't find hd audio device?:confused

My fault. I didn't look far enough in to the driver package. Alot of the HD driver packages include the MS UAA Bus driver. It doesn't look like this one does.
Here it is: Microsoft UAA Bus Driver for High Definition Audio

Install it and then install your audio driver.

The audio driver Dan Penny led me to?
The realtek installation asks me to restart and when I try to install the driver Dan Penny showed me I get the same error as before.

Now when I look in device manager it looks the same as always?

I just did the digging I should have done to start with.
When there is a downgrade from Vista to XP, there is usually a problem with Audio drivers.
I have seen that MEDIA issue with HP's and have not been able to fix it.

First, uninstall the unknown device and the MS UAA.
    Install your chipset driver.
    http://www.viaarena.com/default.aspx?PageID=420&OSID=1&CatID=1070
Run CCleaner, both the Cleaner and Registry.
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/CCleaner_S...ish_d4191.html
Then, reinstall your audio driver again. (Looking back, I don't think you need the MS UAA for the VIA chips)

Choose the "Save File" option and save it to your folder under Windows where you file your drivers.
Does this mean where I store them or where windows needs them?

Do I have to use the steps before:
    1. Boot into Safe Mode
    2. Open Device Manager
    3. Go to System devices
    4. Disable (DO NOT UNINSTALL) the Microsoft UAA driver.
    5. Reboot into Safe Mode again (This is so that driver will not load)
    6. Open Device Manager
    7. Go to System devices
    8. Now... uninstall the Microsoft UAA driver. This should also remove the Realtek audio.
(If it doesn't, uninstall it from Add/Remove Programs)
    9. Reboot to Windows XP (normal boot).
    10. Do not let Windows install your drivers. Say "No" to the New Hardware Wizard.
    11. Run CCleaner, both the Cleaner and Registry.
Then install my chipset driver etc?

    Appreciated

I have uninstalled the UAA driver. The unknown device will not uninstall, I have booted in safe mode, unable to uninstall it I disabled it then rebooted in safe mode but cannot uninstall it?

    Thanks.

It should be ok where you have your other drivers saved
.No you don't need these steps. Your thread title confised me. You don't actually have Realtek sound. It's a Realtek AC'97 chip using VIA drivers.

Disable the unknown, reboot, don't let Windows install drivers, then try to uninstall the unknown.

  16. tezz

    tezz Private E-2

It still won't let me uninstall the unknown?:confused

I really don't have my head on straight for this one.:heli You said that before.

A couple of questions, did you try installing Realtek yourself or have you always had Realtek audio? Your PC should have VIA sound drivers, unless they show up as Realtek after the install. (I'm pretty sure they don't)

Download this app and see if we can identify what that device is and get the proper drivers for it.
    Unknown Device Identifier 6.01

Think I've always had it, in vista/add or remove programs realtek high def audio driver is there.
I did try to install it in xp to see if it would help.

    When I run U.D.I 6.01 I get error: I/O error 105.
When I click detect now it goes off?

  19. musksnipe

    musksnipe Guest

I have never used that app and I am not sure what is causing that error. I thought maybe it could help identify that unknown.
From what I can find on your motherboard, you definitely have VIA sound.
Did you install the chipset driver?
    http://www.viaarena.com/default.aspx...D=1&CatID=1070
This may seem like a circle, but disable the unknown, restart, try to uninstall it again.
I think that unknown device driver is the Microsoft WINMM WDM Audio Compatibility Driver. If I remember it sometimes takes over when your driver disappears or is corrupted. See if it will update.
Then try installing the first driver Dan_Penny suggested. If that doesn't work:
These are the 3 VIA HD drivers. All I can suggest is to try each. The first should be the right driver for you.

VIA HD Audio Codec VT1708 paired with VT8237A/VT8251/CX700(M)
VIA HD Audio Codec VT1708A paired with VX700(M/M2)
    VIA HD Audio Codec VT1708B

That report shows a PCI devce in the middle of all the VIA devices. It must be your sound.

Go to Windows Update and see if it is recognized there and download the driver, if one is suggested.
    http://www.windowsupdate.com

If that doesn't work (and I suspect it won't) try this procedure:
    Scenario One
You DO have "Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator" listed under System Devices

    Carry out the following steps;
    * Copy C:\WINDOWS\inf\machine.inf to a temporary location
    * Edit your copy of machine.inf in Notepad
    * Remove line 20 (ExcludeFromSelect=*)
    * Right-click “Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator” and click “Update Driver”
    * Choose “Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)” and click Next
    * Choose “Don’t search. I will choose the driver to install” and click Next
    * Click “Have Disk”
    * Browse to the location of your copy of machine.inf and click OK
    * Select “Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator” and click Next
    * Wait for the software to install then click Finish

    Scenario Two
You DON’T have "Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator" listed under System Devices

    Carry out the following steps;
    * Copy C:\WINDOWS\inf\machine.inf to a temporary location
    * Edit your copy of machine.inf in Notepad
    * Remove line 20 (ExcludeFromSelect=*)
    * Go to the Control Panel and run “Add Hardware”
    * When the Add Hardware Wizard appears, click Next
    * Wait for it to search for new hardware
    * Choose Yes, I have already connected the hardware and click Next
    * Scroll all the way down and select “Add a new hardware device”, click Next
    * Choose “Install the hardware that I manually select from a list (Advanced)”, click Next
    * Select “Show All Devices” and click Next
    * Click “Have Disk”
    * Browse to the location of your copy of machine.inf and click OK
    * Under Model, select “Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator”, click Next
    * To start installing the drivers, click Next
    * Wait for the software to install then click Finish

Your audio device should now be recognized in Sounds and Audio Device

Do you have Realtek folders in Add/Remove programs?
If you do and they won't uninstal, delete them and run the CCleaner reg tool.
If Reltek was there and you deleted it and ran CCleaner, then try uninstalling the unknowns again through device Manager.
And lastly, try updating the driver this way:
Right click unknown device in Device Manager. Choose Update driver,
Choose "No, not this time" on the first window of the Hardware Wizard, click Next.
Choose "Install from a list or specific location", click Next.
Choose "Don't search, I will choose the driver to install", click Next.
    Click "Have disc".
Then browse to the proper driver. Either on a disc or in a download.

We have tried all I know to remove those unknowns.

    tezz Private E-2

When I choose to update driver... nothing.
When I scan for hardware changes it mentions the uaa HD audio driver so I cancel it.
Also the Medion triple capture device was a creatix device before I think?
Sorry which is the proper driver again?
Do I have to do anything for the PCI device with the yellow question mark or is that part of what I'm already doing?

If we have come to the end of the road and there's still no sound, thanks for your help, twas much appreciated.

Yes I did have realtek in add/remove programs so I followed your instructions and uninstalled it, ran CCleaner etc.

The wizard does not appear when I try to update driver.

Suppose reinstalling Xp would be pointless.

  26. musksnipe

    musksnipe Guest

Ok, now disable both the unknown and the PCI devices and reboot, (without letting Windows install a driver) then try uninstalling both again.
I keep saying that because it looks like your driver won't install with those there.
Then install this driver , if you succeed.
    http://www.viaarena.com/default.aspx...atID=154&Old=1

By chance, do you have a Restore Point back to before you started adding drivers?

  27. tezz

    tezz Private E-2

No but I would be willing to reinstall Xp if there was even a remote chance of getting the thing to work.

I have uninstalled the PCI device only.

Will any useful info be in the log file the installation program creates?

Sorry this is being such a stubborn problem. Installing audio drivers on a Vista machine that has been back graded to XP is usually hard to get audio installed right. Reinstalling XP probably wiil just get the same results.
There maybe something in that log that might give us an idea. VIA HD apparently does use the UAA driver. It may be slightly modified, but we may be able to use some of the Realtek tricks I know.
Post your log and a screenshot of what Device Manager looks like now

That;s OK. It would help maybe, if you could find it.
The unknown device must be your audio. I don't see a ! or ? in front of it, so I don't understand why it is an unknown. The PCI has to be the UAA.
I forgot to have you check Windows Audio Service and to make sure it is running.
    Go to Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Services
Scroll down the list of services until you find the Windows Audio service.
Right click on it and choose Properties.
Make sure it is set to Automatic and Start is checked.
If it wasn't on and you started it, re-boot and see if that makes any difference.

And you did install your chipset driver? That's very important. in order for the audio driver to be recognized.
    http://www.viaarena.com/default.aspx...D=1&CatID=1070

This is the very last thing I can think of to try:
The only problem is it didn't have a great set of instructions and I am unable to test it to see exactly what steps to take.
    This is what I have:
Download this file, unpack it into your folder of choice.
Go to Control Panel>Device Manager>PCI Device>Update Driver> Choose the folder where you extracted it to, then you have to find the .sys file from the UAA HD Add-on folder and other .sys from Via's audio driver folder and re-boot and it'll automatically activate it.
The UAA HD Add-on file is here: http://geekswithblogs.net/lorint/archive/2006/06/11/81540.aspx
    It's listed as Q888111.

  32. musksnipe

    musksnipe Guest

I just went through that whole driver folder and only found 2 references to XP. All the others seem to be Vista related.
This is purely guesses now, as I am out of tricks.
I am not sure if that procedure in my last post will work, because all the .sys driver files I found seem to be for Vista. Try downloading Version 5.00b. That is the newest audio driver on this page.
    http://www.viaarena.com/default.aspx...atID=154&Old=1
Run the procedure in my last post, link to the UAA.sys in the package it the Q888111 package and link to the .sys (for the Via's audio.sys file) See thumbnail. (Follow the path at the top of the image to get to that file.)

I did notice an XP .exe file. If you still don't have sound double click the HDWXP Sp2.exe and see what happens. Set a restore point first though.

Sorry but if these don't do the trick, I am out of suggestions.

I have restored to the earliest point I can, unsure of when exactly I installed Xp but here's what device manager looks like now. I remember just right clicking and updating the drivers for these other devices.
They've just installed so I'm left with just the unknown & uaa issue...

Notice the medion triple capture device has reverted back to creatix.

Sometimes, your Anti-virus program can prevent the installs of drivers. I suggest that you make sure you are off-line and disable your AV, while installing your drivers.
Also, I've been wondering about your Creatix capture device. Apps of that sort can also affect drivers, especially the audio. Did you install that before the audio?
If you have the driver on disc or available another way, I would uninstall it, or at least disable it, then try installing your chipset, UAA, and audio drivers, in that order.

I don't think the other chipset driver would be right for your board.

No the creatix device installed from the start. Same as vista, but after going through a few steps the medion device appeared instead?

    Cheers. Will post when done.

I'll keep you posted on my progress...

Thing is I have had problems with my Vista installation. Think I may have had a virus IE kept on loading by itself, loading :crapsites repeatedly and the pc was barely responding. I did a complete factory restore then it happened again:bangheadso I did something else and deleted the windows old and I am going through my programs...
