Sound card problems? Is there a card?

This may sound like an odd question for those who have lots of hardware experience, but I am not sure if I actually have a sound card, even after opening the case. I got a Dell Optiplex GX270 which was being used in a call center I think. My ViewSonic monitor with built in speakers has worked fine on my previous system. There is a port which looks like it is for audio on the back of the case, but I can't get any sound to come out at all.
I don't know if there is an app of some kind I can run to see if there is a malfunctioning card.

I appreciate everyone's help. Turns out the driver was not installed.
I have Vista Basic on here and am not finding it easy changing from XP to Vista.
Still working on such basics as how to stop Vista from asking me if I really want to do something every time I try to do pretty much anything.

You can turn the UAC off (that's what is asking you those questions) in the Security Center in your Control Panel.
