Hey--I am in serious frustration mode. I stayed up till 2:00 a.m. yesterday followng the Read & Run Me First Guide--TO THE LETTER. The tasks were completed without any errors, and I have the 3 logs saved in a folder to attach to this message. Everything was accomplished smoothly, but I am still plagued by the most annoying pop-ups ever! They appear on the top of my screen (taking up about one inch of the screen) and contain the usual advertising garbage--mainly anti-spyware programs, with a few "refinance your home for less" and "get your college degree online" types of things. It has been going on for such a long time now that I hardly even pay attention anymore! It began about a month ago when I moved to a new house that did not have cable installed. In my panic-stricken state of being tv-less, I resorted to visiting websites offering "free, first-run movies" and "live TV" and, I guess in this case, I should have just read a book instead. At any rate, I am pretty good at protecting my PC from intrusions and have never had a problem like this one that I could not solve. Until now. Please help me.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

See that!! As implied in my PM on why we did not answer your thread.....well we just hit your position in the queue. ;)

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it. This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Do not change any check box options!!
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:
    • Now click the Execute button.
    • Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    • Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    • Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

    Now run Ccleaner!

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Avenger.

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

I just read your instructions and I am going to "take the cure" when I get home from work this evening. I am so excited about zapping the hateful malware that is on my PC!!! One question: You say, in he first paragraph of the instructions, to run gtools (HJT) and select the following lines but do not click fix, etc. But I do not understand where to paste the selected lines. Is it going to be requested during the gtools procedure?

    Thanks so much.

That's C:\MGtools\analyse.exe which is really the HijackThis program that has been renamed to analyse.exe

You don't need to paste them anywhere. When you follow the steps you will see the lines and you need to select them by clicking on the check box. It should be clear when you run the steps.

I am having a problem with this:

I found the program C:\MGtools\analyse.exe and clicked. A DOS window opened and I llowed the program to run all the way through. I did not see the lines I was asked to select, and I did not see an option to select system scan (or any other scan), or to click FIX, or to select the text as per your instructions. When it was finished, it just said press any key to end and I did so, thinking a Windows program might then begin. But all that has happened since then is that the DOS window closed.

You are not double clicking on analyse.exe if you got a DOS window. Sounds like you either ran one of the .BAT files in the C:\MGtools folder or you mistakenly ran C:\MGtools.exe again which is not what I asked you to run. You need to go into the C:\MGtools folder and find analyse.exe and double click on it.

I ran "the cure" and I am attaching the two log files. My PC seemed faster when I rebooted, but I will have to let you know about the popups. Actually, under the old configuration, I would probably have had several popups while writing this message, but there have not been any at all as of yet. But I will let you know for sure a bit later.

Now that the active part of the malware has been removed, a registry entry for it shows that we need to remove. This appears to be the only remaining issue.

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it. This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [pzgurat] c:\documents and settings\nancy c. cummings\local settings\application data\pzgurat.exe pzgurat

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Then reboot your PC! Run analyse.exe again also doing a system scan only again. If the above, line is still gone, then continue on with my final instructions below. If it is not gone, attach a new MGlogs.zip file.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop & renamed it like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\cf" /u
        • Notes: The space between the cf" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
      • Delete the C:\cf folder from combofix.
    2. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    3. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    4. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    6. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    7. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

All fixed!!!! I removed the Registry entry and it did not reappear, so then I removed the downloaded programs on your list and purged the System Restore history. I have not seen even a single popup since I ran the cure on Friday (it is now Sunday).

I do have one remaining concern: I use a portable drive for backup. Do I need to run the same procedure on my portable back up drive, or reformat it entirely, or take some other measure(s) to prevent it from reinfecting my PC when I connect them together?

It is really great to be clean again! You are THE BEST!!!!

Just to be on the save side you could scan this drive with the below tools:

    • your antivirus program
    • Malwarebytes Antimalware - select Perform Full Scan and select the correct drive
    • SUPERAntispyware - select Scan your Computer and select the drive letter
There is no need to run MGtools or ComboFix as they are geared towards the Windows boot drive.
