So, I am a huuuge Adventure Game fan. Myst, The Longest Journey, etc. I know I know...I'm sure those are totally tame for all you WOW and shooter game people.

When I couldn't play games on my old old computer, I decided I needed a new computer. When I couldn't play on that, I decided to upgrade the video card. Then I got my laptop with a Really nice video card.

My prob? I want to play Grim Fandango! Guess what? It doesn't like XP. I really doesn't like dual core. :cry I have tried all sorts of fixes. Nothing has worked.

I am seriously considering trying to find a Win 95 or 98 lappy. How crazy is that??

Have any of you ever gone backwards?

actually I used to do this same, had an old 98 machine pretty tweaked to run games that didn't work well with xp.

I just remembered I never got rid of my old desktop. It's been down in my basement in a box for about 6 years because I thought at the time I'd have some use for it. rolleyes

I may have to bring it up and see if I can play this game.:D

I liked Grim Fandango myself, in the old WIn '98 days. Fortunately, I still have old comps that can play older games. Just need the time to play, now. Ah well. Maybe you could get an old(er) comp. for such 'emergencies'. 'Prolly get one for nuthin'.

I've played Myst. It was my first Adventure game. As far as parts, I wouldn't know what to do with them :D

Yeah, I remembered I had my old desktop down in the basement. It has the big crt and all though. I can't even remember if it's Win98 or Win 2000 though. If I do have to get it out, I'll probably have to get the vaccuum out though.

I've had reasonable success with DOS Emulators, such as DOSBox. This is likely the reason you can't play on XP, Windows hasn't used the same "core" technology since Windows ME.

This would save the need for a whole separate computer. Also, these older games are probably lightweight enough to run in a Virtual Machine, which is another option.

Is it easy to use? I'd love to give it a try. Also, is it taking the computer back too far for a Win 95 game?:confused

There is a installation and setup guide you can use to judge whether you would be comfortable with using the program.

Do note that it offers plugins to make it even easier to use. (But "less authentic" they claim LOL)

Windows 95, 98, and Millenium edition rely on a DOS core. This software emulates the core of these operating systems so you can run the game. You aren't really "taking it back", but rather just teaching a new dog old tricks. :D

Unless I've misunderstood the question

Hehe.. this brought back some memories.... I have a few bits and partrs left over, I used to have almost a freaking warehouse of parts fopr old rigs, but have managed to move a lot of them over the last few years. Tough to find parts now......

I think my slowest machine is my lappy that is 400mHz Intel, 32MB RAM and a 2Gig hard drive, and that is running Win2K... slowly, but running it. I use that for working in MS Office and I keep my records on there for the business I want to open. I admit, if I have something that won't run on my current machines, I stash it away in case I ever come across someone who needs/wants that software.

I think I have copies of WinAmp on CD from the first one to the current, I'm just funny like that. After all, my Lappy couldn't handle the current version of AIM, so I pulled out the spindle of old software and loaded an earlier version that works fine, I just had to turn off the update option.

Good luck with the old rig!!

Woohoo! Turns out the game works on my other XP system that is not dual core and is about 5 years older so a bit slower than my newer system. :)

So, I"m playing Grim Fandango. See ya in a month. ;) :D
