In Australia, it looks like we will soon be outlawing the old fashioned household globe (bulb) in favour of the cold light energy efficient newer type globes, if the greenies get their way. If so, it is going to mean that a lot of light fittings will have to be replaced as they were not designed for the longer, newer, globes. Bazza

I switched over years ago, especially in my computer room first. The heat that was wasted by the globe then had to be sucked out by the air-conditioner. A double or triple whammy. As soon as LED light's come down in price, that's the way I'm going.

Thats the main problem with them they are so long they stick out over the shade and are pretty blinding,TBH I haven't seen any fittings that take the extra length into account although I'm sure they exist.

The second problem is they cost 5.00 per bulb over here and the claim they last 6 years is ABSOLUTE BS,the ones I've put in have lasted 2-3 years just a little longer than a regular bulb, some even less.

Its funny I've got one in my hand now it has the General Electric brand which is an American trademark but it is made in China:D

I did some simple math, and found that the 13W should pay for themselves after 3-5 months of runtime, when replacing 60W incandescents.

Really? 5 Euros each?:eek I can get 3 for $7 CDN. As to longevity, I have never lost one yet in 5 years, and one has been burning 24/7 since

All flourescent tubes contain mercury, not only the modern variety,
    It's how they work.

I have tried to switch over to the Compact Flourescents, but honestly, neither one of us can deal with them. We have exactly 2 Flourescent fixtures in the house, one in the bathroom and one over the kitchen sink. We tried the CF bulbs in the kitchen... made everything look washed out and dull, even food wasn't as good.

Moved them to the bedroom.... lasted 1 day

Moved them to the laundry room.... I spend toom uch time working in there, lasted 2 hours

Now the 2 bulbs I have are in my entry hallway. They're not too bad there, but I honestly can't deal well with them elsewhere. Sticking out from the shade (as mentioned before) means that you have to look at the bulb when you look in that direction, and that gives us headaches...... The only Flourescent I like is the one in our bathroom, becuase when I replaced the bulb, I got one that is a true light type bulb... supposedly more like sunlight in it's spectrum.

If they can make CF bulbs like that I might be more likely to buy them.
