Hi folks, Those bloody kids have done it again.
Yesterday everything was fine, but today my system has no DVD or CD devices mounted.
Its an Asus K8V-MX motherboard with an AMD Sempron 1.8 processor. A 160Gb hard drive as master on IDE bus 0 and an LG DVD burner as master on ide bus 1, with an Sony CD burner as a slave on bus 1. Running on Win XP Pro sp 2.
All I have at the moment is C: The system device manager reports that the drivers are correctly installed for the devices in question, it even knows the mfg and product name. But the device status window says "Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)"
The devices are plugged in correctly, the master/slave jumpers are in the right place and I can find the devices in the BIOS. I have tried uninstalling the devices, rebooting and then reinstalling the devices, but my dispassionate friend (Code 41) seems to have taken quite a liking to this machine.

    Any ideas

    Cheers

If your drives are not showing in MY Computer, this is a link to a RegHack put up by one of the Moderators (Adrynalyne) here. All you have to do is extract the .zip file and double click it. It will add itself to your registry. I believe it is the same as the manual steps listed in Trussman's link.
Whenever making changes to Registry, back it up first.
I have used this same fix before and it worked great. (I don't remember if you have to restart your system for the change to affect)

I know the feeling, we repeatedly lost our drives for a year, after we had put in a 4port usb into a PCI slot. Trick with this is the CD and DVD drive worked fine for a while then disappeared and reappeared as they felt like for 12 months.

Fix was a new motherboard, the original Intel 3.6 had a heatsink problem which was affecting the connections to nearly everything. I replaced the motherboard ($139)and the CPU(they didt tell us we need to upgrade this as well) to a core duo 2, ($269). Perfect working order DVD's.

Also check all the programs you have loaded, for DVD burning, I found that one of the programs I loaded interferred with the rest and blanked out the DVD
