OK, I have a feeling that this may end up getting moved to the links forum, but I am starting it here more for conversation than to pimp a link....

I found a new site today called Library Thing The kewl part about this site (kinda like a MySpace for bookworms) is that you can basically load a listing of your entire home library and see what you have, what you might like etc.. still exploring, but this is soo freakin kewl.

Wanna hear the really funny part???

I found this while I was surfing Google for :CueCat info. Was going through a bunch of stuff today and found my old :CueCat and was wondering if they still had any use.

Well, I hooked it up to my keyboard spot (no USB here..LOL) then was surfing around when I found LIbraryThing.com and so, after signing up, I started scanning the bar code on the insid of the front cover of each of my books and it added them to my list. No additional software oonbard or anything, just scan and go. This is sooooo neat.

OK, I know that I really sound like a geek now, but what teh heck, I have always wanted to have a list of all the books I own and never had the time to sit down and put them all into access.

    OK... any thoughts??

Do you use a portable scanner, or do you use a printer / scanner (all-in-one)?

What happens if you have 2 copies of a book? Does it list it twice, or flag it as an error? I have 2 copies of some books for various reasons.

I just visited their site. You can manually enter basic info and they will find the rest of the info via their links. Wonder what will happen if you entered DVD's and CD's, or anything else with a barcode? Baked Beans, Peanut Butter, etc? :D

Just realised that CueCat refers to your hand-held scanner.

    Just found this.

The price is unbeatable. I am trying to order one but PayPal is rejecting my correct phone number. I have emailled Paypal for clarification.

BTW, I have entered 10 books, some by ISBN number, some manually. Bazza

LMAO!! Baz man, you need to chill onthe caffiene man.... LOL

I am not sure about the double book thing. I will have to try it later today when I get up again and see what happens. I just started snatching books off by the shelf full and scanning them in. I had a few that I had to enter manually, but most just scanned right in.

The best part, is that without the :CueCat software, there is not info relay for them to snatch up your info with.

As to scanning other barcodes, what it does is use the barcode to determine the ISBN# and does a search with that number via AMazon.com or the LIbrary of Congress (may need that one when I enter my Physician's Desk Reference :))

OK... back to be dwith me

I am a big enough geek that within 48 hours of buying a PS3, I had looked up how to install a new/larger hard drive and ordered said hard drive on Newegg.

I hacked my blood glucometer within 8 hours of having it.

I am afraid to ask this, but.... how and why????

LOL I have used a number of those over the years and they have improved a lot from what there were when I first used them in the field. I have an older one for my personal se. I could prolly get my doc to upgrade me, but I like the one I have and I don't have enough issues to use it more than 8 to 10 times a month... but now my geekness is in question as I never even considered hacking it :)

I just felt the need to hack it. I noticed it had a data port on it and I went about finding the needed drivers to be able to download the log data that it stores. some other stuff too.

I didn't play with any of the settings or anything, just a data download.

LOL @ BM... mine is a little more Old Skool, no data ports, but it does remember the last 5 readings to give you an average.

Anyone who wants to check out my collection thus far (91 books, and that is just off my small office shelf, not even what's laying around yet inthe office or what is in the rest of the house.) you can check out my profile here: http://www.librarything.com/profile/Leatherdaddy772

I think it's just a really kewl site and since I love to read, it is a good way to see what other people think about a book or series before i go spend money on it (not a library person only because i don't get a lot of time to read, so it usually takes me longer to finish something than they give.)

You've probably noticed already, but librarything.com allow you to enter 100 books free-of-charge. After that it is USD$10 per year, or USD$25 for a lifetime. I put a little yellow sticky dot on the outside cover to quickly show I have entered that book. Would help with a large collection. Bazza

That's odd.... I'm pushing 150 right now (I think I got everything in my office) and it hasn't given me a hassle at all

Will have to keep an eye on it

I've built a circuit to switch my desk lamp on and off from the PC. The cable was too short and I was sick of having to reach behind the monitor to turn it off. Could've bought an extension I suppose but that's no fun! :)
