Sheesh... I am reading through this thread and thinking about my back yeard sitting just outside the window behind me.

Mind you, I still have to rake up the K9 landmines in the area and pick up all the trash from next door that was under the show (have been waiting to dry out), and even then it will look like crap, but then again, I only rent, and am not going to pour a bunch of money and sweat into a yard I can't enjoy permanently.

    Thanks for the compliments guys!

@Calltaker... A couple of comfy chairs, a little table, maybe an umbrella, and some potted plants...you could turn that into a nice private place to sit out when it gets warm enough! You wouldn't have to spend tons of money at all. Oh, and of course, cleaning up the K9 landmines would probably be nice. LOL

Great looking yard ya got there, Laura. Looks like the whole area is very pretty. If that part of the world is anything like I remember, I'm not surprised. And yep, Oscar is getting big real fast.

Re: My patches of dirt:- Well, they're not dirt anymore - they are green. Even though most of it is weeds. We got some more autumn showers today, so that should keep things alive for a while. I have a LOT of pruning and grass cutting ahead of me. I broke my toe last Monday, but I should me mobile again pretty soon, (I hope!).

Mini iris finally bloomed, last year it was the bird of paradise, can't seem to have it all at once. Took a picture of the entry but too dark, I'll try again later. although it's all greens it's nice looking, not that I had much to do with it.

Photo is misleading, the flowers are tiny, mini, can fit in your hand.

Thanks Musk, will be so hot soon won't be able to go outside. Cools off to the 90's at night in the summer. :( (Armpit)

Wow Darlene, those Irises are really really pretty. The ones I have are totally different. I love yours.

And yep, G. Those are Yoshino Cherry trees (http://www.arborday.org/treeguide/TreeDetail.cfm?ID=9). Wait until you see my Kwanzan Cherry. When that blooms, which should be in a few weeks, I'll take a picture. It is unbelievable.

Cherries are my fave trees if you can't tell. :)

I would love to... problem is that our neighborhood is the type where it would disappear.... I have a nice firepit that we sit around in the winter time, but I have to put it out, cool it off and bring it in each time. This is why I want a home in a nice neighborhood so I can do those things :)

So what grows in partial shade? I have an area I can grow some stuff in, and would like to have a small 'garden' Stuff to eat, or stuff to look at. I live in a mainly pine forrest, so some sun, not a whole lot.

    Thanks for any info.

I don't know what these are. They are just coming up in a small border bed around my front porch. There was nothing there last year when moved in, except for grass, so I left it alone and was gong to let fill with grass.
The first one, I think might be lillies like I had in the back last year. The second, I have no idea what they are. I will take a better picture after I get it weeded, de-grassed, and they get a little bigger.

The first ones look like hyacinths coming up. They would be late if you were in PA. I don't know when they come out near you though. Here's an example from google. http://static.flickr.com/45/128544153_d323ee3a2e.jpg

The second ones look like daffodils that won't flower again. If you don't do what you need to after they flower in the spring, the flower part won't come back, just the leaves. If they don't flower this year, I would dig them out and get rid of them.

Hyacinth? You mean Mrs. Bucket? LOL (That's pronounced boo-kay)roflmao Loved that show.:D

    Thanks, ladies.
Not sure that the other is dandelions, they seemed fleshier, but will rip them out as soon as I can tell.

Awesome, wish I had the patience for outdoor gardening. I took up metal detecting recently instead :) Still waiting on my peppers, should have something to show in next 2 weeks I hope.

It's like meditation to me. Very Zen-like. I love it. :)

Find anything while detecting metal?;) We've always gone to the seashore in the summer and you always see the people out in the evening. I figure they must rake it in.

Can't wait to see the peppers MA

    Hey muskie.

Great pics and gorgeous flowers. I think Kes and I were wrong about your flowers though. They look like some kind of lily and not hyacinths.

The yellow bush looks like a forsythia bush.

Haha...looks like your visitor is sunbathing. :D

.. can't tell by the pic, but the white flowers could be queen annes lace or wild carrot. Dig up a root and see if it looks like a miniature carrot. It'll smell like a carrot too.

oops, duh! I shoulda looked at the pic title! Say, that's a really good idea. I may try sand w/ my horse manure. I am putting loads of horse manure on a pasture but find it doesn't have enough weight to stay put. I lose about 15-20% to erosion before the seeds come in. I have been thinking of mixing it w/ sand to get a nice rich topsoil w/ some body to it. I'll use barn straw (w/ ruminant manure from sheep and goats) for a topmix and seed w/ pasture mix.
About the unidentified plants: yea, they do look like marigolds. I use them in my garden a lot. They have a very distinct smell!
    Beautiful pix, btw!

awesome pix! you've all inspired me! :cry sniff! I tend to grow just for food, but this year I plan to do more purely ornamentals. I have daffodils coming up. Maybe I'll take some pix!
Thanks MK. I just got in from hauling a truckload of horse manure and I still have quite a ways to go. There isn't enough grass to burn on the pasture I am seeding as it is recently bulldozed (long story). But I may try that w/ another stretch. I don't understand why burning helps reseed? Do you need to actually plant seed on it? This is pretty interesting. I will research it more. Thnx!

Probably going to add some yellow something along the walk. As you can tell, by all the brown spots in the lawn, I've been killing weeds.
Going to give it a good raking and get some seed down, some time this week.

    water once a week only
    it's only known DISTILLED water
    no direct sunlight
I think we had this plant for a year before it bloomed
thought I had killed it, but wife wouldn't give up
seems like it sits dormant forever....and then all of a sudden comes to life.
one of the easiest orchids to grow, (according to people who know) but I can kill anything except zuchinni or weeds
only my other half is as gorgeous!!!!!
and the blooms last for weeks. wish I could
