    Hi all,
I am at the point of giving up:cry. After my last step, MGtools, besides wanting to wipe this computer clean I felt like smashing it into little bitty pieces.
    Anyway,
I've been "working" on this for a month now. Was ready to give up when I found your site and XP cleaning procedure. All was going well, superantispy removed some crap, spybot S&D removed a couple, then MAM indicated I was clean.
Moved to combofix. Couldn't get it to run (now I believe I may have missed a " at the beginning, I don't know I was tired and it was late). I double clicked the icon (in frustration) and ran the program.
This evening I decided to try again. deleted combofix and log and re-downloaded it. This time it worked, but it didn't fix the time back to normal. Combofix.exe is supposed to download from bleepingcomputer.com isn't it?
So next I ran MGtools.exe. It stopped and the Processdll.exe error popped up. I whatever button I thought would help fix it. It just hung up and did nothing else. I then went to MS to download .net 3.0, because the suggestion was I didn't have a .net framework on my computer. {even though it shows both 1.X and 2.X .net int my add/remove programs utility} While I was downloading 3.0, my computer was going crazy (per task manager and the sounds I was hearing from harddrive). The installation froze for .net 3.0 and I lost internet connection and rebooted. Noticed new services in services.msc. My brain is fried, I will attach the files and hope you all can lend your brain. I have another computer that is so messed up I can't get internet access or reinstall XP on it! I am just going to buy a new HD for it.
    Thanks in advance! Sincerely
    Richard

Sorry to hear about all your troubles ....what bothers me (other than the malware) is your statement about the noise - if you are referring to the noise the hard drive is making, then you may be having issues other than malware...have you run a chkdsk on the drive?

    In the meantime:
Please use add/remove programs to uninstall:
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2

    Is this your internet home page - R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://game.nbcheadsup.com/??
If it isn't, please add it to the below HJT fix.

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it. This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.

    * Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    * Do not change any check box options!!
    * Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:

    * Now click the Execute button.
    * Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    * Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    * Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    * A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

Also delete all files in the below folders except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp
    C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Local Settings\Temp

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Avenger.

Be sure to tell us how things are running.

    Hi again Tim,
Bothers you...it freaked me out! :banghead I worked physically hard all day and was trying to apply the fixes you suggested (am just grasping how all this stuff works, coupled with my paranoia = utter brain meltdown) and as I was downloading .net 3.5 was when it happened. Everything froze and I rebooted.
Remove Programs couldn't remove the Java 2.0 (or I would have already done that) so I found Windows Install Clean Up and removed it. Tried to download .net 3.5 again and it downloaded and installed w/o further problems. Being utterly wasted :zzz I called it quits for the evening/morning.
I got up yesterday and began again on my mission. http://game.nbcheadsup.com/?? was my home page (Texas Hold'em tournament) because I don't EVER use IE except when I hit Windows Update in the All Programs folder. I don't even have a short cut for it anywhere.
Disabled everything as you suggested and ran MGtools. Deleted, pasted, ran Avenger and deleted final tools.
Then went to work. That's when this story gets interesting (IMHO). I get back home and hear a weird sound..kind of loud. Look at my computer and the screen is black the red light on the CPU case is red and both DVD Rams' lights are rapidly blinking. I dart over to the power off button and shut it off. Wait about a minute (if I was freaked out last night it = DEFCON 1, I was on DEFCON 4 now). :eek Power it on again and the same thing. I've had a HD go bad and this didn't sound anything like it. It sounded more like the HD was trying to do everything at once. I tried powering it back on and same thing.
The fourth time I decided (remembered?) to unhook the HD before powering up. I took of the panel and there were still lights on in the inside!!! WTF??? Is there a level past DEFCON 4?
I grabbed the power cord and yanked it off. The lights went dim, as did my excitement. After I calmed down, I unplugged the HD . Restarted computer and it booted like nothing that I just described happened! I was attempting to get on the internet. Wouldn't let me. It would say enabled, but NO action. Figured I was screwed and put in the installation disc to format.
Powered up and it actually booted to the disc (wouldn't give me the option to boot from disc before the "incident"). I was about to wipe my entire HD when I decided to try ONE last time. Everything was working "normally", but I decided to start over with Combofix since it didn't fix my time back like it did the first time I ran it. Then ran MGtools. Files are attached.
    Here's some other odd incidents:
    1) I noticed "mike" is not listed in the users tab in Task Manager. (cant say how long it has been that way, but less than two weeks for sure, probably less than a week).
    2) I can't log into the Administrator's account in Safe mode. Says I have forgotten the password. Unless the password is created in BIOS, I never set one. It didn't have one a week ago. I just clicked it and it automatically logged me on.
    3) As I'm booting my computer, a screen comes up with
    Intel Boot Agent 4.1.10
    [something I can't remember] Base code BA1210BC-G (U or W) I.
[something else related I didn't catch]
Never have seen this until last night. Happens every time I reboot now. Thanks a million for the time you are taking to help me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm sorry to say that this is not malware ...your logs are clean!

I would suggest that you post in the software section for further assistance.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. If we used ComboFix then UNINSTALL COMBOFIX (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
    2.
    * Click START then RUN
    * Now type combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
    * Note: The space between the X and the /U, it must be there.
    3. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    4. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    5. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
    * Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
    * Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    6. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
How to Protect yourself from malware!

Thanks TIMW for all your help!!! Could you tell me how one learns to read the logs? I really hate MALWARE/HACKERS :boxing etc. and would like to help out here or somewhere else if you don't accept new helpers.

So a hacker can't set a password in the Safe Mode Administrator? Again,
    Thanks a million!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    You could start at malwareremoval.com

As to the safe mode administrator ...you should set a password yourself!

    You are welcome...glad to help.

    Hi again TIM,
There really wasn't an answer to my question about the safe mode administrator, but instead a suggestion. I am having a difficult time understanding my computer is fixed if there is an administrator on my machine I can't delete or access. Could you expand my understanding? Thanks again for your time!

Was that what you were trying to convey? You can get additional information about users and setting passwords in the software section. :)
