DVD-RW Burner??

OK! I admit to knowing next to nothing about DVD-RW hardware. Please inform me what exactly I need to both watch DVDs and burn DVDs on my computer. The reason I ask is that there is so much information that I am overwhelmed by the wide variety of types of hardware. Is there such a thing as one piece of hardware that can both "read" and burn DVDs? Am I
nuts?(that was rhetorical)

Just so you know: any DVDRW drive (also called a DVD burner) will play and burn anything: DVDs (data, music, movies) and CDs (data, music, videoCD, etc). That is why most new PCs are sold with DVD burners; it's because they can play and burn anything. They will NOT play or burn BluRay unless it specifically says so, and those are fairly expensive. So if the price is under $75 it is not BluRay compatible.

 

Thank you dlb! I am still a novice concerning DVD technology. I know, where have I been, but for someone just arriving into the 21st century tecnologically, I am striving to make progress. Your answers and advice help greatly.
