Now how does this work? Political rant...

I saw Hillary Clinton say something about making the 'Big Oil' companies pay the gas tax for us. Nice concept, if you don't believe in economics. I just saw a blurb on the news, so I found an amusing clip on the YouTube.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VBA6D7hFVfQ

So now Big Oil is going to pay the tax for us, invest and do R&D on alternative fuels, and my price per gallon will go down?roflmao But it is approved by Ms. Clinton.

Forget supply and demand, forget the price of gas, and the cost of it, does she really believes Big Oil is going to take this kind of hit? She might be better off legalizing pot. And for the dude that can't decide between a gallon of gas and a gallon of milk, drink the milk, put the gas in your fuel tank! Well, maybe we should not legalize pot or we will have more folks that don't know the difference between gas and milk...

Fred_G's random rant is now off. Feel free to discuss/comment.

Politicians will say anything to get elected. They rely on the uninformed (unintelligent) masses who react to rhetoric. Sadly, it works.

I think the only one saying that a government gas price cut wouldn't work is Obama. Even McCain is spouting off about it.

I say we make a vehicle that runs on windshield wiper fluid.. It's cheaper than gas, and it's already in the vehicle..

    Of course I'm kidding.

Btw, if anyone is interested in reading up on politics, this is a good site. It seems fairly unbiased (I think, anyway). I don't read the blogs, just the news.

in a free economy, who are we to force a business to give back? now, maybe the big oil co's might have a moral obligation to help us out, but there is no way they should be forced to do it. 20 billion dollar profits are pretty big tho...

Paxton, are you trying to kick me off the road? My windshield water cleaner stoped working years ago!

    Laura, interesting link.

Here's a better idea, legalize pot and develop a vehicle that runs on it :)

Unfortunately, Marijuana will never be legalized as the government can not control and tax it. THis is why it remains illegal to this day, despite known medical uses for it.

but that is a whole different rant that I won't get into here :)

I guess I missed something. Last I knew, it was simply McCain wanting to suspend the Gas Tax between Labor Day and Memorial Day.

So why believe the oil companies' stories and not hers?
All I know is with two oil men in charge and anenergy team picked by Kenneth Lay I tend to have trouble believeing anything the govt. has to say about the price of oil.
    Wait, I know!
    Let's burn food instead! :foolish

Ok, Class time for some research-

1- What is the difference between profit and profit margin?

2- What is the percentage of the Total US taxes that US Oil companies pay. Last year the IRS collected XXX- what % was from oil companies?

3 - What US President made the most sweeping changes to our Energy program and made us more dependant on foreign oil?

If the U.S. or any other Govt. is really serious about lowering the price of gas, the best place to start is where by far the greatest percentage of the cost is, (I bet you're way ahead of me here), - the Govt. tax margins.

    http://www.eia.doe.gov/bookshelf/brochures/gasolinepricesprimer/eia1_2005primerM.html

    http://www.taxfoundation.org/publications/show/1139.html

(Note: Both of the above links are 2005 prices, so the Govt. mark-up will be even more nowadays).

I know in Aust., since Gulf War I&II, (1991), gas prices have risen from about $0.42c a litre to nearly $1.50 a litre. Each time gas prices double, the go down maybe half of what they went up, then go up steadily. Something is not quite right here.rolleyes

    The US disaster started with-

How about a FORTY percent embedded tax that is then added on by about FORTY percent more.

Mrs. Clinton is campaigning in IN where most of the RVs in America are made.
Knocking off that gas tax could keep some people working.
She also said that Teddy Roosevelt took on the oil companies at the start of the last century and it is time someone did again.

Roosevelt was president in the 1930's and 1940's. Begining of the last century?

I am all for cheap gas, we just need to keep the government out of it! :D

I wish the conservatives would come up with a candidate that would take on 'Big Government'. Not going to happen anytime soon unfortunantly.

I believe the reference was to this:-
    Biography of Theodore Roosevelt

His Presidential term was indeed the beginning of the last century, (or Millennium, if you will).

    Theodore Roosevelt

I think, maybe you're thinking of F.D.R., Fred. LOL
