the only real way to tell is by examining the motherboard jumpers closely. You will have to do this anyway to change to a higher cpu. The jumpers on the board tell the tale with multipliers and bus speeds just how high a specific mobo can go. Some boards have jumpers and older ones still had little switch blocks. I would suspect your board has jumpers although I have seen 600mhz boards with the switch blocks.

For instance a multiplyer set at 6 and fsb at 100 would be set to 600mhz cpu or a 166 fsb set to a multiplier of 3 would be 500mhz.

Like Appzalien said: be sure that your motherboard will support a 133mhz FSB. If you could post the exact model of your PC, we could do some research and find out exactly what your motherboard can or cannot support. There's probably over 300 different configurations of PCs in the Presario 5000 series, so the exact model number is necessary; it should look like 5BW3KUS or something. Alternatively, posting the Everest report should supply us with the info needed also....

I have a Compaq as well and there aren't many things to upgrade. You can't really set any jumpers on the motherboard because they don't want you messing around with it. It's kind of their way of making you buy a whole new computer if you find that you need to upgrade.

If you plug something in that's too much for the computer, your computer won't even start up.

Also seeing as it's a Compaq, they've probably locked up the BIOS so that you can't change any settings either.

Well, on the right side of my computer it says:

5BW 5000A Series then theres a wide gap and at the bottom in small words it says: 184939-999
    06/29/00

And to the right is my bar code.

There's your specs. According to that link, a max of a Pentium III at 800mhz is the best you can do. However, this info is commonly incorrect because it was written at a time when CPUs didn't go much faster than 800mhz. But it also says that the FSB is 66mhz to run with the 566mhz Celeron. A 66mhz bus isn't what we wanted to see, but there's a chance that the board can handle 133mhz bus (66.666 x 2 = 133.33). A 66mhz bus is commonly an 'under-clocked' 133mhz bus. I couldn't find any really detailed info about this PC's motherboard (granted, I didn't spend alot of time looking either), but if you can do more research, maybe you can find out if others have successfully used 133mhz FSB chips in that system. I couldn't find a motherboard manual or schematic either which would have shown if there's jumpers for changing the FSB clock. Some creative Googling should turn up the info you need. It might also say in the Everest report what your FSB clock speed is, and if other speeds are available. A different system info tool might provide this info if Everest doesn't (I like PCWizard).

A good CPU info tool might give you this info also. Check this link for a program that will suit your needs http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads14.html

    Good luck!

Hmmm, why does it say SBC model? I'm hoping that that's not my PC, cuz I was hoping to upgrade it to at least 1 ghz with 512mb ram! :cry

Upon researching this further, I have found conflicting information. In my HP link above, it says that the max memory is 128mb x 2 slots = 256mb. I found another site which says there's 3 slots for a max of 256mb each = 768mb. In each scenario it is PC100/133 168pin SDRAM. Using the part number 184939-999 I was able to find some drivers at the HP site, but absolutely no detailed specs of any kind, no manuals, no schematics, nothing except drivers and generic guides that weren't model specific for changing CD drives and whatnot. That part number links up with a Presario model 5BWM2A which is (according to crucial.com) part of the 5000T series, and not the 5000A series, so there's some confusing and conflicting info out there. I think for the best and most accurate info, you should have all your part numbers and serial numbers written down, then go to the HP help/support online chat armed with those numbers, or try to find an 800 support number....

    Good luck!

:( I'm so confused. You know anywhere I can buy a computer for like 30$ and under? I'm only 13 for Pete's sake!
