Strange things. I just got my new rig a few weeks ago. First time for a HD this size -- 500 Gigs. Strangest thing. Every time I run defrag, no matter how long I leave it -- 50 minutes or 6 hours, defrag NEVER finishes. Is this a common problem with Vista? I have 4 gigs of RAM so memory is not a problem.

    Thanks for any input.rolleyes

    Hi

Not really a common issue as yours is first I heard of, possibles as usual to halt a defrag are an application or screensaver kicking in as the Vista defrag has a setting by default of low priority so if another app wants to kick in then its interupted, I however prefer and always have done O&O Defrag so rely on that app to auto defrag my drives on the fly.

BUT free app to try is http://www.majorgeeks.com/Auslogics_Disk_Defrag_d5266.html

Which Vista BTW, 32bit or 64bit?

    Thank you.
This is the 32 bit version. Any good sources for O&O Defrag? I hate to admit this but I think my cold medicine is interfering with my thinking right now. Can't recall what O&O stands for. I'm sure when you remind me my brain cells will all be firing at top capacity. :)

I use Diskeeper 2008 Pro on Vista 32 bit Home Premium and it's great. Defrags very nicely using and transparently, but without taking all of eternity like Vista's own defragger does. There are free trial versions at the Diskeeper site, so you can play with it free for 30 days (IIRC) without risk.

I'm not a huge fan of the Vista defrag either. The few times I've run it, I've only seen it actually finish twice out of maybe 8 or 10 tries, all on different PCs. Now when I defrag a Vista PC, I use Auslogics as posted above by Halo. Also, with the Vista defrag, it's hard to tell if it's really even doing anything because there's no graph or chart or whatever like most other defraggers have.

    Hi

O&O is named after the two developers of this app Olaf and Oliver, main company takes this O&O as corporate name.

O&O is not free ( sadly old freebie version does not work in Vista ) http://www.majorgeeks.com/O&O_Defrag_Professional_Edition_d809.html but I find this app perfect, has a few options that go above the normal space defrag

Also can defrag a few drives at once, which is handy in multiple HD senarios.

But Auslogic Defrag is a decient freebie and will do the job fine.

I can agree with HALO about O&O Defrag 10.By far the best defrag app I've seen and use.You have 5 different modes to defrag your HD.Very stable and fast peace of software.

Just wondering. Is there an option for a trial first? Also, is there a way to pay a little more to get it mailed to you on a DVD? I hate to admit this but in the past 20+ years I have had way too many HD crashes, and other hardware disasters, not to mention the need for a low level reformat at times.
(I confess to not having tried a low level reformat though since the early 90's).

Trial is 30days IIRC and yes you can get the software on CD but do check this with O&O sales support in case they changed this to online only.

Plus do check the Promotions page at O&O for discounts or offers ( at times they bundle 2 apps with one )

If downloading applications you've paid for just remember to burn their EXE/Setups and manuals ( PDFs ) to CD as soon as poss.
