Trying to install the Realtek driver for my new Mobo. The HDD is the same, and I am probably having issues with prior installed drivers. I just don't know how to get rid of them or what they are.

    Here's my info:
    Old Mobo - Asus a7nbx-vm (32bit)
    XP

    New Mobo - ECS GF6100-M754 (64bit)
Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 (build 2600)
    2.20 gigahertz AMD Athlon 64

    Any help is appreciated

    Go to your Device Manager
    Start>Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager
This will list all your devices
Any that are showing a yellow "?" or an "X" are telling you they are having a problem.
Double clicking on any of the devices so marked, will bring up a "Properties" window that should describe its problem.
There is a driver tab at the top of this window that gives you the driver details and allows you to replace or update the driver if it is faulty.

Device manager recognizes that the "Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus" has an issue, but it won't allow me to update or reinstall the driver.

What does it say the issue is?

what do you mean by "won't allow"?

    KB835221 Hotfix
    1. Remove "Audio device on High Definition Audio Bus"
    2. Download from Microsoft the KB835221 hotfix and install it:
    HD_Audio/KB835221.exe
    3. Restart the system, and XP will automatically detect the devices
    4. After this you should be able to install Realtek drivers.

The key word is should. Give this a try.
You may be able to remove the Audio device on High Definition Audio Bus by disabling it, rebooting, then uninstalling it.

Won't let me remove the current audio device because it may be required for the computer to boot.

I'm trying to use the hotfix without deleting the device... just waiting on the most recent driver to download before I report whether the fix worked.

  7. soonercntry

    soonercntry Private E-2

Hotfix didn't work. I still cannot install the new driver.

  8. soonercntry

When I try to uninstall the driver, I get this message:

Failed to uninstall the device. The device may be required to boot up the computer.

I seem to remember dlb having somewhat similar issue a few days ago with an audio driver.
After trying a number of obvious fixes, he found an entry in his BIOS setup for a non existant audio device.
After disabling it there, he was allowed to put the proper driver into his system.
It would be worth at least a look in your BIOS setup for an audio device; temporarily disable it and then booting.
If the boot fails, you should be able to simply re-enable it in your BIOS.

I tried this. It still didn't work. However, it did allow me to download the correct driver once the sound was disabled... but once I enabled the sound - it reverted back to the old driver.

Best to take the right steps instead of bouncing around. Download your chipset and install it.
    http://www.nvidia.com/object/nforce_nf4_winxp64_8.26_11.09.html
Make sure to reboot, if the install doesn't.
Then install the MS UAA driver.
(It is supposed to be contained in the driver package, but I sometimes wonder if it installs first, as is needed)
    http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/SO...AA-Bus-Driver-for-High-Definition-Audio.shtml
Reboot again, now try installing your audio driver.

The link you gave me is for Vista... unfortunately - or fortunately - I've got XP. :)

All three of those links are for XP, although I did put up XP 64bit at nVidia.
These are the OS descriptions on each link.
The nVidia link: nForce 430/410/405/400 - Windows XP Professional x64
The UAA link: OS: Win NT/2K/XP
    The ECS link: For WinXP / WinXP x64 / Vista32 / Vista64

The XP 32bit link at nVidia is:

Followed the steps, and I get [Error Code : -0001].

    This is becoming frustrating.

I have never heard of a negative error message.

Agreed, but this is what I get.

What step gave you the error? Was there any other message with the error code?
What is showing in Device Manager now?
Audio drivers can be very frustrating to get installed properly.
The more info you give, the better the help we can give.

    Never mind this...
Somehow I found a way around the double post filter. LOL

I can get almost completely through the installation, but at 99% installed it gives me this negative error.

I still have an exclamation mark on "Audio Device on High Definition Audio Driver"

    I'm certainly frustrated.-D

So,the audio driver has not installed, but the MS UAA has? Is that in you System devices in Dev. Man.?

Get the latest driver off your motherboard site.
    Your audio: http://www.ecs.com.tw/ECSWebSite/Pro...uID=48&LanID=9
Here is the UAA again. Microsoft-UAA-Bus-Driver-for-High-Definition-Audio
Save them on to your hard drive, in their own folder, after extracting them (if zipped) . That way you'll be able to run the setup.exe or find the driver files.
These next steps should unload the driver and get it to uninstall, then install fully.

Reboot into your BIOS and disable the onboard audio.
Boot into Safe Mode and go to Add/rRmove Programs and uninstall the Realtek audio drivers.
Reboot back into safe mode. Go to Device Manager, in the menu (at top), select View/Show Hidden Devices and delete any of the Audio/Multimedia devices.
Reboot back to safe mode. Make sure the devices aren't listed.
Reboot again to BIOS and enable the onboard audio.
Boot into Windows and cancel the Hardware Wizard.
Go to the folder you created and run the setups. Install the UAA first, if it has not been installed.
    Reboot when finished installing.

Everything should now work right? :confused

Unfortunately, I am getting that negative failure code whenever I try and install the MS UAA driver (realtek).

When I go to device manager, the infamous exclamation mark is on the sound driver. When I dbl clk it, this is what I get:

This device is not configured correctly. (Code 1)

To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver.

BTW, Thank You for all of your help. I know that this is frustrating for you too.

Yeah, I'm not understanding what is happening here.
Give me a bit of time to look into this, It's possible, that the UAA driver file I have been suggesting has been corrupted or changed.
One suggestion I have right now, is to completely uninstall all sound drivers including the UAA. Find their folders and make sure they are really gone after uninstalling them. Then go to MS updates and see if it suggests the KB888111 for you.
I'll get looking for more info on this tomorrow AM.

EDIT: Also, it's time I got some more info about your system. Maybe I can see where this is going wrong.
Use Everest to get a report of your system’s hardware, OS, and drivers. Upload the report as an attachment
    Everest: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4181
When Everest is done scanning, click "Report" at the top of the Everest window, click next to get to "Report Profile", select "Hardware related pages", click next, select "Plain Text", click "Finish". Then when it is done processing, click "Save To File". Save it where you want to. (I would use Desktop.)
Click "Go Advanced" in the MG reply box, scroll down a little way until you see "Manage Attachments", click it, browse to your file, click "Upload", and close the window. Then submit the post. You may have to also type something in the reply box, like, "Here's my report.", so that it will submit.

Reading back to your first post, you thought you might have problems with the old board's audio affecting your install. Your old board had C-Media audio. Look for and uninstall it.
If you can't find the drivers in Add/Remove, look for the folder, delete it and run CCleaner's Registry tool.
It also had a NVidia nForce2 IGP Chipset, see if you can find that driver and uninstall it.
(Should be in the nVidia folder. Don't delete the whole folder, only the driver, if you can't uninstall it, then run CCleaner)

I found something weird, in your Everest report, which may be just an Everest problem (it doesn't always read the motherboard info, but usually just puts unknown) or a problem in your PC.
Your motherboard chipset section and is missing. Also, your audio controller info is missing. (It would show in the South Bridge section of the chipset.)
So, that is telling me your chipset driver possibly is not installed. That may explain the negative error codes, too.

Install your chipset driver off your disc or install this one. It is the chipset driver fron Nvidia.
    http://www.nvidia.com/object/nforce_....26_11.09.html

Reboot, when installed. Look in Dev. Man and see if the UAA is now OK.
If it is install your audio driver

I think I may have a clue what is ailing my computer. Unfortunately, I have the 32-bit version of XP Pro. This chipset and drivers were built for XP 64-bit. Shame on me for not seeing that before I bought the MoBo.

Could I just install a Sound Card and be done with this?

  28. musksnipe

    musksnipe Guest

I don't see any where in the specs that the board is strictly 64 bit and nearly all the drivers are for XP/XP Pro 64 bit, and Vista/Vista 64 bit. Unless your driver disc supplied only 64 bit drivers, it shouldn't be that.
And yes, a sound card should circumvent your problem.

  29. soonercntry

    soonercntry Private E-2

When I try to install the chipset driver, I get an error that tells me that the installation cannot complete due to the fact that the driver is for XP 64 / Vista 64.

That's because it is and I have my head up someplace it shouldn't be. :banghead
I've looked at that driver several times now. And every time I did, I read "for XP/ XP Pro 64 bit" I read it wrong. Sorry, I made a frustrating problem, more frustrating.
This IS the 32 bit driver:
    http://www.nvidia.com/object/nforce_nf4_winxp32_8.26_11.09.html

Install it and go through the steps of removing Realtek and the KB888111 (MS UAA) again, then try reinstalling the MS UAA and then your audio agan.

No luck. I'm going to just purchase a soundcard and call it good!

Have any suggestions for a good/cheap soundcard? lol
