This is a home computer that my kids use. The computer has slowed to a crawl. I discovered that the hard drive was full, so I clean it up and deleted programs to open up the resources. This helped a little.

When you start the computer up it takes almost forever. Once you get on the internet it seems to work great while browsing the internet.

I use Ad-Aware and AVG on this computer.

To fix this problem I followed the Thead "How to protect yourself from malware" I also tried "Basic computer maintenance everyone should do" the last thread I tried was "READ AND RUN ME FIRST".

I think these have helped. But this slow system is not fixed yet. I have attached the logs. Thanks for you help.

The good news is that your problems are not due to malware. The bad news is that you will have to continue to search for the answer to your problems in another forum. Perhaps you are having hard disk issues or other hardware issues. The 4 Gb that you have available on your drive is a little small by todays standards. I will move this thread to the Hardware Forum. I'm choosing it instead of the Software Forum since you really don't seem to have much running at startup and thus your issues appear to be more like hardware.

I do suggest that you uninstall SUPERAntiSpyware now since it will just add to your slow startup times.

This thread was suppose to be moved by "Chaslang" to the Hardware forum. I think it hit the Software forum by mistake.

I agree with Chaslang it is a hardware issue. I replaced the video card on this computer recently. I think this might be causing the slow operations. I will get the information on the video card and post it. I don't want anyone to waste their time until I get home and get that information. One major point is that the replaced video card was put into a different slot. But I need to go back and look at the computer to see what type of slot the old card fit into and the type of slot the new video card is in. Thanks for your help.

    1. The original video card that went bad was a NVIDA in a AGP slot.
    2. I replaced it with a JATON Video card in the PCI slot.
(some where along the way this computer has slowed to a crawl on start up or when I try to open a word document. However, this PC works great once I'm on the net.
    3. I replaced the video card again with a GeForce FX5600 ultra 128MB DDR back into the AGP slot.

This had no effect in helping to speed this slow computer.

Also, I am also trying to remove the program "yahoo_chickeninvaders". The PC states "can't delete sharing violation".

I also installed "Ulimate Troubleshooter" to see if it would help. "No help". When I try to remove it. The PC states can't remove, could not open INSTALL.LOG file.

    Thanks for your help

See if you can uninstall chicken invaders from safe mode.
As far as Ultimate troubleshooter, can you browse to the folder? If o is there an uninstall in there. If so, click it and see if it will uninstall. I not, I'd probably just delete the entire folder after looking ovr what is in it.

Download CCleaner, the slim version. http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4191.html
Run it and it might clear out some of the registry entries with those two programs.
When you go to clean registry items, it will offer you the opportunity to create a backup. Always say YES! that way, if something goes wrong, you click on the reg file with the date you did the cleaning and all will be back to the way it was before you cleaned.

to try and uninstall Ultimate troubleshooter give this a try find the folder in programs folder open it and locate the INSTALL.LOG file right click and rename to INSTALL.LOG.EXE then locate the uninstaller with in the folder double left click to run a dialog box will come up find the same folder in this box then change the name of the file in the find section to the same INSTALL.LOG.EXE hit open and the uninstaller should open check uninstall and away you go

I was able to remove Ulimate Troubleshooter, with your help. Thanks

I was not able to remove the Yahoo_chicken invaders. I also tried the safe mode. I don't see the program in the Add/Remove programs. I only see the icon on the windows screen. I can't open the icon or remove it. When I try to open it, it states "Not valid Win32 Application". When I try to delete is I get a sharing violation. Whats up with that?

    Thanks

I just fixed a PC with similar problems to yours.
I checked for and cleaned out a bit of malware, but that didn't really improve the performance.
I ran CCleaner, cleaned out over 250MB of junk files. Still no real speedup.
I uninstalled a few apps that were not necessary. Finally, got about 8 GB of free space on the HDD. Still didn't have the speed I thought it should.
I also removed nearly all of the apps that were starting with Windows and that didn't have much of an affect on speed either.
In my wanderings, I found there where some missing or corrupted system files. I talked to the owner about this, as I only have an old XP SP1 disc for Dells and wasn't sure I could repair the files, so I reformatted, reinstalled the OS, updated all the way to SP3, and installed some basic apps. Now the PC runs great.
I'm not saying to go and reformat your OS, but shrinking the amount of your files on the HDD AND checking for and repairing any corrupted or missing system files may help get you back up to speed.

i was just reading through your post again and you say this is an older computer thinking what version of avg are you using if it is 8.0 i was using this version as well and found it slowed the performance of my athlon 2000 and after much debate have now changed to another free anti virus and this has improved the performance dramatically there are a lot of other good free anti virus programs out there avast for one but it to is known to be a resource hog also i am giving Avira Anti virus personal a try now also if you download a program called dust buster http://majorgeeks.com/DustBuster_d1182.html and in stall this it may give you some more space there is also the option to clean out old system restore points but this should only be done if you are confident that your computer is running perfectly

Windows 2000 does not have system restore.

I was able to remove the Yahoo_chicken icon by using the "Move to Boot" Program. Thanks.

I use AVG 7.5. To experiment I removed it along with all the other protection just to see if the system would speed up. I was only able to get just a minor increase in speed.

I just don't understand. This computer use to be fast. It must have corrupted or missing files as one of the post suggested.

I do not have any disk for this windows 2000 system so that I can re-install it. Any other ideas.

as i don't know much on win 2000 but have you or can you run a disc scan to see if it can find and fix any errors also have you done a defrag check your task manager see if anything is using up your cpu or large amounts of memory

    I can't find Disc scan. So I don't think it's available on Windows 2000.
I did defrag this computer before I started this thread. It helped a little. I checked the Task Manager. The CPU is runs at around 1% to 2%
I downloaded two programs from this site to check system performance. I found nothing taking up the resources. Thanks for your help. But I think we will just use this computer on the net.

    Windows 2000, which I use.
Open My Computer, and highlight C, then click File and click Properties.
Click the Tools tab. Under Error-checking, click Check Now.
Under Check disk options, select the Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors check box.
