    Hello All,
I have followed your instructions on removing malware on a few computers now with no problems... and have read quite a few threads as well to fix some of them.
I started working on a friends computer, I think it has SP3 on it, and alot of malware.
I cleaned up startup, run= in the registry, and then ran SuperAntiSpyware...
Well it found a bunch, deleted them and on the reboot I get BSOD.
Safe mode and last know good also give the BSOD.
I get a STOP: C0000135 unable to locate component. Baseamdsu32

I cannot find this file or any reference to it anywhere on the net...
In another forum I found that some spyware thinks some new MS files are torjans,, which is what I think happened...
I was hoping someone could help in finding and restoring this file, or maybe walking me through un-installing SP3..?

Also a general FYI for those of you running SP3....

    Thanks

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Was SP3 on it before you started doing malware cleaning.

Exactly what did remove and how did you remove it.

Is this the exact word for word message with all spacing exactly as the message is given? Was it really STOP:0xC0000135? These error messages can occur both ways. Was anything else different. Check again and write it down exactly as it occurs. This particular STOP error number has occurred in the past due to various Windows Updates. I remember some occurring after the SP2 updates.

    Hi Chaslang,
Thanks for taking the time to look this over...
I am at work right now, so I will check on the exact stop message tonight.

When I was in the registry I saw a reference to SP3, so that was why I assumed SP3 was on it. I did not install it, so if it was on it, it would have been before I received the computer, however I am not positive that it had SP3 on it. I am trying to verify with my sister-in-law (it was her computer).
I followed the run and readme first and cleaned up startup items, and uninstalled anything that was on your list (After stopping a spools.exe process that was loaded about 10 times,,, it kept coming back and pegging the cpu at 100% so had to be stopped repeatedly). Then tried to install Superantispyware, but it kept returning a windows installer error about an incorrect syntax
    I looked in the registry, HKLM/softare/microsoft/windows/current version/run
I deleted a couple of enties, one was for spools.exe one was random jumble of letters (like sdfhtyek.exe) and I did a search for spools.exe in the registry and that was when I saw reference to SP3. I rebooted in safe mode and deleted c:\windows\spools.exe and rebooted again into windows and then I was able to install Superantispyware without any issues updated and ran it.
It identified a ton of stuff, I don't remember all but I do remember smitfraud and vundo was on the list and a few trojans. I had superantispyware remove, and clicked reboot when prompted.
On the re-boot is when I started getting the stop error. Anyways, I will post the exact stop message tonight.
    Thanks again.

Using what program and what did you cleanup? Anything besides spools.exe?

    Hi again Chaslang,
AS far as startup, it was spools.exe from registry,, and the garbage exe's (random letters like mentioned earlier)
Got rid of AOL startup, stopped Spybot from starting with windows, windows messenger, and HP's printer monitor..

When I try to boot, I get the WIndows XP logo with the activity slider under it,,,, then screen goes black for a moment,, (at the point where the graphics normally switch from a dos based to windows based) but it goes BSOD right there..

    STOP: c0000135 {Unable to locate component}
This application has failed to start because Baseamdsu32 was not found. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem.

Which is the absolute shortest BSOD message I have ever seen...
I was thinking of booting from CD to recovery console and trying to roll back to SP2....
But I will wait to see what you think.
Thank you again, and have a great weekend.

It's possible that registry corruption is preventing bootup. The below procedure could help getting around that:

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;307545&sd=tech

If that does not help then it looks to me like you may be needing a Windows Rebuild, Repair or reinstall. If you don't know how to do this, I suggest that you post in the Software Forum or refer to the below links:
