Ive heard that people can type in your cell # and track your location with google maps and GPS and such, any good links or programs to do this that are free?

I lost my cell phone and need to find it, every site i found on google gives some kind of porn video after typing in the cell #

Thanks for any advice in advance

Contact you cell phone provider, if used they can track it.

I don't remember any useful url to help you, and it requires the user acknowledge the command to the phone, but I seem to recall a site where you can send the phone a command and the phone will then ping google earth. BUT THE USER HAS TO BE COOPERATIVE. It probably has a msg to explain why the user is acknowledging the requested command.

Lamentably, I gave up at that point because I didn't have time to research what would probably prove to be the case with every other "cell trap", for lack of a better word. I figured you'd have to be an absolute idiot to just answer that kind of request that you ping a system. It also meant it was useless to me.

Call your cell provider & report your phone stolen. This guarentees that they can't activate your phone to a new number on the system. It only becomes useful to the thief if it has OTHER functions, which most do today.

If it has an MP3 player, or it was a Blackberry or Pocket PC, you might not see it again.

A word of hope, for you... Wednesday I left my Pocket PC on a bus seat and someone gave it to the driver. People are becoming increasingly aware of exactly how much of our lives are inside our phones, and so they return them.

Why don't you just call it and offer a reward for its safe return? Granted, you shouldn't have to, but it is an imperfect world.

RIght. And my cell provider has allowed me to have the outbound call function turned off, while leaving it open to RECEIVING calls FROM me! (Me and everyone else!) It's come in handy. My phone was gone for days, several years ago. I shut off outgoing calls, called voicemail regularly for messages, and called the phone several times a day. It DID pay off.

(I lose it about every 6 months. It's been returned all but once in 6 years!)

It is a good idea to note down the IMEI number of the handset.
    Dial in *#06#

Now, If your phone is misplaced or stolen, you simply have to inform your service provider along with the relevant IMEI number. At least now that handset will get blocked world wide and no one can use it. If that can be hacked ...Phew!! But Then how many people have the knowledge or the persistence to get it done.

I know this will not answer your question, regarding tracking a lost /stolen phone but it can give you some comfort, in the sense that your investment is not giving a culprit any use or pleasure.

The company that sold him/her the phone can provide that info. It should also be with the packaging that came with said phone.

AND I should think that his cell service provider should be able to see it, too, else how could they block it reginally, much less world wide?

This bears some research. I smell a project.

I sure hope you can't simply go to a website and detect any cell phone you wish! that would be a serious privacy breach!! And I certainly hope cell phone providers can't do that either..

But truth be said, when I say "can", I actually mean "may". It is possible, and the phone does not have to be a GPS. I know from a fried who who's a policeman here in Italy, that they've been tracking cell phones to hunt people down for years (before GPS on cell phones was common). They can do it even if the cell phone is switched off. Don't ask me how.

There was much debate about making this possible only with a warrant, or whether for safety reasons it should be possible to use for all people, so as to reach them in situations of danger. Not sure what the final decision was.

But we're talking about the authorities, not just any old private service provider or cell phone manufacturer, looking after their own interests, and able to follow you through all your movements without any kind of responsibility or accountability.

Sorry, I know you want and need your cell phone back, but I'm sure that at the end of the day, you'll be happier knowing it's not possible; the inconveniences are rather small if compared to the risks ;)
