What free "cookbook" software do you use?

I have a ton of recipes that I would like to put in some kind of easy cookbook type of software to organize them and so they are all in one spot. Which one do you use?

    Hi Jen

Personally I use Microsoft Office One Note to keep track of all sorts of info including recipies as it allows you to have a front page then new pages per recipe or type/genres of.

This maybe of interest to you as a freebie http://www.recipeship.com/download.asp

Read all 19 posts. I use Zulupad, it's free and works well (see my post #19)

BUT make sure you make a copy (save as a different place, folder, each time, as it sometimes gets confused :cry ) and says it can't find your master file.

I normally just lurk on here, but I had to register just for this question. I own a small cookbook software company. Our software isn't free, but it's only $29.95. And once you copy/paste your recipes in, you can easily print out as many cookbooks as you want on your own home computer. Our family cookbook software is at CookbookPeople.com.

    (Now back to lurking!)

Thank you for your ideas. I am going thru them and trying them out to see what works best.
MatildaMiller, I'm sure your program is great, however, being a single mother of 3 on a limited budget, I can not afford your program, or any other for that matter. That's why I'm looking for a "free" one.

You need to submit your software for approval, Matilda-

    I fully understand.

What the heck. Send me an email to tmiller@cookbookpeople.com with your personal address and I'll mail you a cd for free. (It's 160 megs, so you probably don't want to just download it. If you have high speed, I'll email you a link/cd key.)

I hate to think of you using a mediocre "free" thing when you can have *ahem* the best cookbook software around IMHBPO (in my highly biased personal opinion).

Hehe, not really though the owners would like you to submit your SW, I'm not sure if either of them cooks, but I'm sure their wives could help though!:-D

@ jennmomof3 What I do is organize my recipes in gmail, they have a great search engine as long as you classify your dishes properly. It's a free e-mail account gmail.com and you can store so much in there that it's truly unbelievable! If you need some help, just yell.:)

Hi there Matilda and welcome to MajorGeeks.:major

You are not by any means in trouble! It is obvious you are not here to spam our forums, but that you gave a helpful answer and then went beyond that by offering to send out a copy of the software for free. :cool

The previous reply stating you need to submit your software is not really accurate. While your software 'might' fit into our misc section it's really not the type of software the MG's offers at this time and quite honestly, I don't foresee Tim & Jim going in that direction. This site, as I'm sure you've noticed leans toward geeky stuff (tweaking & etc.) with a few geeky graphic toys thrown in the mix.

I think BooM was just trying to be helpful because we do get slammed pretty hard here with spam. MG's as a whole doesn't like, nor tolerate spam. People often sign up just to get their link out there and will hit as many forums as they can before getting nailed by a mod. Needless to say, it's quite annoying and the members know how difficult & time consuming it can be for us to keep up with all the garbage posters.

To bottom line it....your post was helpful and the only difference between your reply/link and the other replies is that you actually own the software. Not a big deal in this case b/c you aren't spamming! :)

Glad you came out of lurkdom and hope to see you around more often! :wine

I've tried what feels like a million and ten different cookbook software programs, free and otherwise. You know what I finally settled on as working best?

Word documents, saved in folders and sub-folders. Individual recipes I can print at will when needed, easily found.

    Thanks, AbbySue.

I agree that my software probably doesn't fit the "usual" stuff here. Thanks for making me feel welcome, though.

Heresy! The problem with doing it that way is that you can't print it out and give your cookbook to friends!

Truth is, I actually used to do the exact same thing. Then I realized if I had some software that formatted it, I could print out the cookbook and give it out as a highly personalized Christmas present.

Then I realized that all the software out there stunk for doing just that. So I built my own.

Now every other year I spend about $5 per book (toner and paper) printing out revisions to my cookbook and give them out at Xmas.

Even if you don't buy my software, you really should format it so you can give your cookbook to others. It's such a fun way to share something so personal as the recipes you grew up with.

Au contraire!!! I've given cookbooks as wedding presents numerous times. Buy a binder and some clear pages, print the recipes, put them together with a custom designed cover done in either Word or Publisher, and voila! Cookbook, no additional software necessary! :-D

I get that you're trying to sell your stuff, but you're wasting your time on me. :wave

I use foodnetwork.com cookbook. They have a recipe search, and everything you can think of is on there
