I have a Dell Dimension 9100 with a DVD burner. All of a sudden, the DVD drawer began to open and close by itself. It opens every 10-15 seconds and closes immediately after opening. At first I though it was a hardware problem, so I used some compressed air to clean out the drive incase some dirt/dust was making the open/close contact. Then I booted the computer into Safe Mode and the drive acted normal while I was in Safe Mode. I rebooted normally and logged onto my account, and it started again. It happens in both my account and my wife's. However, it does not seem to happen while I am in the logon screen to choose accounts. I need some help. Any suggestions would really be appreciated. The noise of the opening and closing is driving me crazy!!!

I would suggest a trip to the malware forum.Complete the read and run section and let them look just in case. I have seen some sites that can do that to a drawer and if it were hardware the cd drive would do that in safe mode also IMHO.

The easist solution to that is to restore your omputer to a time before this started happening. It could be malware or it could be an updated driver loading that is doing this because it conflicts with something else.

There are programs that can do this

I have one sitting on my desktop because my laptop CD/DVD drive is hard to open so I run the progrm and the drive opens.

Do you have a hotkey that will do this? It could be a problem with your keyboard software. Maybe the software doesn't load in safe mode but does in normal mode. (Something on the order of a stuck key which keeps toggling that key on and off). Since it happens in two different users accounts, I would tend towards software ating weird rather than assuming that both you and your wife manged to be infected with the exact same malware.

I went to correct my spelling and could not edit it.
I said "ating weird rather than assuming that both you and your wife manged.." and meant acting weird rather than assuming that both you and your wife managed... Sorry.

Dell emailed me and said it was a virus. Run Norton
