Windows kernel question

I am trying to understand in simple terms what the windows kernel is, would MS-DOS be considered the kernel? can anyone tell me exactly which file is the kernel file? is it CMD.exe or Command.com? thanks!

That is just a comparison of the vista kernel vs the linux kernal, what i am wanting to know is which file the windows kernal is, is is a bunch of files consisting of the kernal? autoexec.bat, config.sys, command.com, ect.. or is it simply the CMD shell? trying to grasp what the kernel is first. Once i know what the windows kernel is exactly then i will understand the linux kernel alot easier
