    Hi

Many variables can affect download speed, can be a slow server, distance of sever from you to if downloading from p2p the seeds are limiting the download speeds..... so some questions,

    1. What is your Windows version?
    2. What speed is your broadband package?
    3. Where are you downloading from?
    4. Do a test here http://www.speedtest.net/ and pick server close to you and then far away and what are download speeds?
    5. If you download this http://www.majorgeeks.com/JAlbum_d5963.html ( just a sample file ) and what are your speeds?
    6. Have you scanned for malware ( virii/trojans/spyware)?
    7. Checked with your ISP that they are not having issues in your area?

    Hi

What would answers to Q4 & Q5 be?
As issue maybe with Rapidshare servers, so the above two can rule out your internet being the issue, if globally you have slow speeds.

Q7 could be in play if globally you have slow speeds with the above two questions, and also if you download alot via rapidshare, your ISP may envoke traffic sahping to limit downloading via particular source ( many do traffic shape p2p ).

Tcp Optimizer, yes you could try that to set to optimal to see if the changes help, but if Q4 and 5 speeds are good then its rapidshare issue only.

how about cfos?would u recommend it...they say it slows down the connection

    thanx

    Hi

I have a 3mb DL and 1UL speed and with the normal overheads you dont normally hit the max but should get close, so here is my last test on my speed.

    http://www.speedtest.net/result/220403589.png

So if you have a 10MB connection yours should be vastly higher than mine, so post the Forum Link that will come at the end of the test. BUT with all tests do make sure your not downloading anthing in background as this will skew the results.

    Cfos, wouldnt mess with.

Really wouldnt rely on Windows Defender for a scan of your system for malware, what antivirus do you have installed?

Do follow this and see if anything is picked up in the scans, READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide but dont post any logs in this thread, if the scans find anything malware related, start a new thread in the Malware area of this forum,

is there going to be a conflict if i use tcp optimizer with speedupmypc and any other software?ill just post my speedtest result later..im currently downloading on rapidshare...:)

Yes dont use too many applications to do same job as they can cause your PC to become slower not quicker, while its great to tweak a system it also has its pitfalls, tcp optimizer shouldnt interfear with speedupmypc, as all it will do is tweak the tcpip settings, but as speedupmypc does this too then its counterproductive.

I personally dont subscribe to the magical mystical speedup utilities, there is in most cases no magic tool to speed up a PC, general cleaning & maintanence steps are all thats needed.

ah ok on test.. pop a post in later then.

    Hi Dust

Its much better than what you where getting at the start of this thread, however if you have 10mb broadband and are paying for that ( I do have to add the caveate of your ISP may say "upto 10mb speeds" and depending on your line quality and distance from exchange your speeds maybe much slower ) then that speed is not so good, so I would be calling your ISP to have them check your line and connection.

Again do check your PC for malware and this guide is good READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide ( dont post any logs in this thread, if malware is forund start new thread in the Malware Forum ), make sure your not running too many of the same type of security programs, like Antivirus, firewalls and antimalware.

You're not sharing your internet with other PCs on a network are you?

    hi halo,

im not sharing my internet with other pc's on the network...thanx halo:)

Clearly, those are lousy speeds. Look at Halo's speed report and compare it to your numbers. His service is rated 3mb DL and his speed test shows he's actually getting close to that. You, on the other hand, supposedly have a much faster broadband service, over 3 times the speed of Halo's service, but your actual speed in much slower, 333kbps vs. 2879kbps. Either something is wrong in your computer or you need to have a serious talk with your ISP.

    hi halo,

im using nod32,windows defender, spywareblaster and avg anti rootkit(which i think doesnt update anymore,is it still useful?,im afraid of using other antirootkit coz i think it might erase my normal applications, can u recommend to me one anti rootkit?is gmer ok?) and i use sygate firewall.

    hi usafveteran,

thanx man, i think there is a problem with both my isp and my computer...

    Hi

Gmer is ok, but more so back to your speed issue, ok try this for me, disable your Firewall and do that speed test again, what is speed you getting?

Also what type is your Broadband, is it ADSL or Cable? if ADSL then you should have DSL filters on each of the phone connections in your house, so unplug all phones and just have your PC and Modem/Router connected ( also swap out one of the other filters with the one connected to yoru modem/router in case that is faulty ) any difference? ( basically this is trying to see if another item connected to phoneline is causing interference )

    What model modem/router you have?

Have you spoken to your ISP to get them to line test your connection, if so what did they say? as while your connection may say 10mb you maybe too far from exchange if ADSL to ever get that speed, but this is something the ISP needs to test for.

I would run that full malware guide I posted and if any of the scans pick anything up then start new thread in the mawlare forum area for the experts there to have a look as malware can cause this, even if your resident security doesnt find anything it doesnt mean your malware free as it hides itself very good these days.

Outside chance is Winsock is broken, especially if you have malware in past, so this may help to reset it http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4372.html but as a last resort only.

it says: attached\filesystem\ntfs\ntfs device \driver\tcpip\device\ip device \driver\tcpip\device\tcp device \driver\tcpip\device\udp device\driver\tcpicp\device\rawlp and on the value it says amon monitor/eset wpsdrvnt.sys(wpsdrvnt/sygate tech.....

it this false positive?thanx in advance

    hi halo,

now my computer has become worst..my download speed is only 5kbps..very pathetic..ive talked to my isp, they cant seem to find any solution to my problem.they say the network is ok..my computer is i think immaculately clean...they said it migth be from the traffic in the network, too many subscribers, cause im using a shared ip address..they changed the direction of my antenna....i hope there is still hope....

    Hi Dust

Very likely that GMER has flagged Sygate as malware is a false positive, but as mentioned to fully rule out malware, you'll need to run the guide I liked to and post in malware forum for the experts their to rule malware out as many scanners will nto find the sneeky malwares, however a trained eye of a malware expert can spot anomalious files from the logs.

If your sharing your broadband then yes also very likely why your having such patchy speeds, however many ISPs should be running bandwidth shaping to lessen this so that you get better speeds than your getting now, so 5kbps is very poor even with many users on same IP, although does depend what ratio that use of users on same IP, personally if thats the line from your ISP, I would be looking for new ISP.

    Some new ideas to try.................

Ok lets try a different thing, as your using wireless, do you have access to the wireless router? if so then connect to that with an ethernet cable direct to your PC to see if speeds change.

How far are you away from the router? whats the signal strenght like, if you right click the wireless network icon is system tray and choose properties it normally tells you the strenght of signal.

Do you have friend with a wireless laptop to be able to pop over and connect to your wireless to test the speeds, this may help rule out your PC as the problem?

Is this wireless broadband in your home or school/university?

Run that speed test I posted over the course of this weekend at different times of the day and night and see if their is a time that the speeds pickup.

If you disable your security programs, does your speed increase?

Do please run the malware guide and start a new thread in malware and lets fully rule this out as the issue.

*likely to be one of those situations, I'd really need to be infront of your PC to get a full grip of the problem.
