    Thanks Fred_G,
The welcome page is not where i want to post my Q's about F@H,
    for example...
I had console but it seemed to be stuck...no progress...
I moved it from desktop to documents,
    then to my drive...
but it's still not in (recommended) 'program files'...
and I'm making no progress as far as I can see, except logs are building up with a lot of crash report type info.
    I don't like this.
    2 days= one WU...

    then 3 days... nada...

so I went back to square one and downloaded graphics version...
installed it where suggested instead of desktop.:celebrate
Then I see Icon in start menu... Icon in tray...
I can click on without causing shutdown...
    I :drool it...
I guess graphics is slower than console, but at least I'm producing sumthin'...
And I still have the console crap in my program files that I gonna figure out what to do about that later...
I'll go back to console after I finish this WU maybe,
    but I tell ya"
I really love watching those proteins build in graphic.:-D
    :wave

I used to use the graphical one. Console is the best way, but use whichever is easier and more productive for you. You running a single or multi core CPU? If you have a multi, you can run one instance on each core...:drool

    Thanks Fred_G...
I doubt that I have multi, it's dell dimension 8100, over 6 years old, I guess I'm due for an upgrade.
I don't even know about multi cores, I need to update my brain.:-D

  7. Fred_G

Yeah, that is most likely a single core CPU. Some of the 'new fangled doo dads' have 2 to 4 CPU's or Cores built into one... :-D

I will go back to console... i just installed wrong the 1st time,
    Many questions...
I still have logs and other stuff from the console F@H that is dormant... but i can still see it in my files.
my new graphics is cruising along great, I just like to see what happening... and since I got the graphics... i have it in my tray... i can look at progress...
can I do that with console?/
I am working on stopping these crashes which seems to be a non-malware problem...
it affected F@H in that after too many crashes it decided to send data to Stanford and started a new core...
    I was on 82... amber... I got to step ??? 56?
then it came back and sent... data... now i'm working on core78...???

and then it says it will take a month to finish one work unit...???
what ...i must be doing something wrong.
    Is my computer that obsolete???

    ...
I'm knocking out frames at 1/2 hour each...
so it says I'll be done in late July???
    2,500,000 frames? :cry

My main question is this:: I still have a folder in 'Program files' called FatH and there is icon for console red gear cog in there... and icons for FahCore78, 79, 81, 82... and more that seems to be duplicate of stuff i'm trying not to mess it up...
next step is to get back to the console version...
    I'm running graphics now...
    old console version is dormant...
I think I have a lot of data saved i don't know where to do with it...???

It will change after it settles in and time should shorten.

I would just let the graphic WU finish before you change anything else.

thanks for the vote of confidence Cat_w_9_lives, I've seen it change from an estimated finish of August blah, blah, something... to late June... (same WU in progress) but I'm still working on crash prevention meanwhile. If I have a crash, F@H resumes with back to August finish expectancy.
But I love to see that there is progress, I can't stop from looking at how it's going... rolleyes
I didn't have that option when I had console ... Is that because I installed it wrong :confused , or can I redo console later and have it in my tray like this is?
I agree I'm going to leave it alone for the time being, but eventually I want to tweak it up, maybe study up about overclocking...
Also I have access to my daughters laptop, my (ex)wifes computer, and my son won't let me near his, but he might join in with my name/ group...
One more thing while I'm posting, I still have all the old stuff from when I had console ...1st on desktop, then moved to documents, then moved to program files, but it's all in a folder i named "folding at home"
    It's like dormant now...
I think I broke something while I was moving it, maybe I dropped it and it broke:-D...
but the thing is, I wonder if those logs and other fahcore icon things are worth saving for whenever I do go back with console version... I think there is two days worth of work stored in there, but i dunno, maybe Stanford already got that and it's all just archive stuff?? :confused
I'm reading up on all this stuff as much as I can, but there is so much I don't know...
    Thanks again:highfive

What is crashing, the computer or Folding? If your computer is unstable, Folding will give you Early Unit End. If you are having proplems, definantly don't overclock it till you sort them out.

I'm taking back what I posted earlier, delete the Console and files just to make sure that is not one of the problems, it was a iffy install.

If you have any questions, you can look here:
    http://www.stanford.edu/group/pandegroup/folding/faq-uninstall.html

To uninstall the Console you just delete it and all the files/logs on your desktop. After you turn in the WUs you don't need them. If/when you change back it's better to do a clean install.

"For the console version of the software, you should be able to search for the FAH binary (called FAHConsole4.exe ) and delete the FAH program."

Don't delete anything in the new folder you created or files for the graphic client. (they are all in that folder) The Graphic Client has a different .exe file so you don't have to worry.

After you delete the Console files, do a search again for FAHConsole4.exe, if it comes up in the search delete it.

Forgive me if you posted this already, but I don't see it, what are your PC specifications for the 8100? Operating System, RAM, Processor

Were you crashing prior to folding? Think you're saying the PC is crashing, not just the WU? Please clarify for us and what error do you get if any? Do you notice the crash after you open say IE/FF and another program or multiple pages, is there any pattern to the crashes?

  13. lbmest

    lbmest MajorGeek

    I don't think so.

When you get a chance, go ahead and follow Cat_w_9_lives' advice and delete the files.
If and when you can get back to the console, you have good instructions to install it from previous posts.
Also here's the FahMon program homepage that shanemail uses for monitoring folding consoles - http://fahmon.net/.
Take a look at that to see if you might want to use it, instead of directly accessing the logs for information.
    Hope this helps.

!st- I will delete all the old console stuff.
    2nd- some of my PC stats= Pentium 4, Processor 1.3 GHz 8CQ7L01
...umm, I forgot where to look for this, I'm copying it by hand from invoice that came when it was new, but I know the lady I bought it from did several upgrades...
from 40 GB hard drive to 80GB and 128 MB ram to 386MB (i think)
also from windows millennium to XP w SP2
I added a DVD writer to the original DVD player (drives E and F now)
I reinstalled windows XP w SP2 last month or so because of crashing, then I found MG-forum. I went through read me with Abri and I was told virus logs were clean after that. we think it's a software problem (missing files?)
lastly there is some pattern to the crashes, I mentioned in a different post about it (can't find it right now or I could redirect...), but it just auto-reboots, only I have to log in again to get F@H restarted. I almost got used to it, :crybaby,
when I had only myself (as administrator) using PC, I had no password, when it rebooted it would not require logging in. But I was advised to make a limited account for everyday use to help prevent phishing or whatever,
no next I wanna know if I can make F@H graphic client to run auto while I'm not logged in?
that's all i got to say about that!) :)

    Thanks lbmest,
Is this FahMon program only for console not graphic? Maybe I don't need it for graphic... and can I look at a log file while graphic is running?

    Forgot Thanks Cat_w_9_lives,
here's some of the kind of things causing my crashes, It seems to me I used to get a warning if I did dumb things, like "you can't do that..."
also it happens more so when ff is open, i disabled explorer, (that's where i think the whole problem started, with internet explorer)

1- right click on a "microsoft picture it- publish it" icon and attempt to open it with irfanview instead = crash
2- rename a notepad and don't include (.txt) = crash
3- click on to play a video that system can't handle or whatever? = crash
4- any attempt to run certain program when not administrator = crash
5- upload pictures? click on browse, click on pic, click open, click browse again for next... look at pics... forget where you were, click on browse again = crash
6- upload pictures2? there's other ways to click on wrong sequence of ...browse , select pic, click open , click same browse again,,, wrong sequence = crash
7- opening zip folders... i dunno , easy to open when browser is closed. browser window open = crash
8- probably more i haven't taken note of...

    I misspoke dynno.
You can use it to monitor any client graphical or console except the PS-3 client.

Quote from Stanford's download page -
What are the different types of clients? The Console client runs in the background and is launched from a terminal window (command line i.e. DOS window), to which they output text messages about the simulation's progress. The graphical clients (former GUI or current System Tray) run in the background and has a graphics window interface that allows you to see the protein being simulated. The v4.x Screensaver client runs like other screensavers, except that it also runs our calculation in the background. However, a separate Screensaver version is being phased out, and that feature has been rolled in to the graphical clients. High Performance and Beta clients are detailed at the bottom of this page.

    1. Yes delete Console, see post 12, it will be fine.

    2. Re RAM go to Start > Control Panel > System (click on System)

Window will come up that has your PC Specs and at the bottom will be how much RAM you have, let us know.

    3. When you crash do you get any kind of error?

    4. Graphic Client runs as long as your PC is on, unless you have it on power save or shut down. I will look at my settings if yours is shutting down when you log off?

    5. No you don't need FahMon for Graphic Client. If you're crashing better not to install anymore software till we take a look at that issue and try to figure it out.

    6. What is your Antivirus, Firewall? How many icons to you have in your bottom right side, what are they?

    Hi Cat_w_9_lives,
I knew my ram stat was around there somewhere:-D, it's 384 MB...

I used to get error screens and requests for report from, i think, microsoft,
but since going thru read me etc....... , i see just a flash of a blue screen w white writing on it for a millisecond... then black, then rebooting... takes only a few seconds, and i'm back at log-on screen. then i choose dnnyo, or dann if i want administrator or limited account... then F@H, I think it doesn't start running until I'm fully logged on. yeah, because I can watch it it start up basically.
I don't know if it shuts down when I log off, I can't remember the last time I did log off . only sometimes I switch users to go on my other account and then I can still see it running in task manager...
I have AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic and still have windows firewall that came with XP w SP2
    My tray icons are:
    1) AntiVir (red umbrella)
    2) F@H (red gear)
    3) audio (gray speaker)
    4) Advanced Windows Care3 (blue ball w white 'C' in it)
    5) my internet connection (2 blue monitors flashing)

I've had audio problems for quite a while, but I don't have my speakers here anyway so it's hard to tell. Sometimes the audio icon isn't there, :confused,
I've been trying to read other peoples posts about audio to get clues, like drivers, sound card, etc, but it's never gonna work until I get new speakers anyway, :-D, (I left my old ones in Tucson when I moved to Milw. in April :banghead )
    Thanks Cat_w_9_lives

    another reasearch project?

I kind of hate to open a new can of worms, but I wonder if anybody has heard of this, or what your opinions might be. I like F@H, (my mom has Alzheimer's)... and I know I can't run my CPU any more than 100%.
This looks to me like a similar program but more for cancer.

    About Cels@Home
Cels@Home is a research project that uses Internet-connected computers to do research in cell adhesion. One of the many applications of this is in cancer research, as the point at which cancerous cells quit staying in place, and instead break free to move throughout the body, is a critical event that makes the disease much harder to treat. You can participate by downloading and running a free program on your computer.

Cels@Home is based at the University of Texas in Austin, USA.

    Hello Dnnyo,

You have low available memory, AntiVir is good from what I can see, not a resource hog. Not sure about Advanced Windows Care3 re resource usage but that is not really the problem anyway.

If you open up a graphics program, a browser, FAH running, Anti running, WinAdv3 running, yes you might crash. I'm not good at hardware, just know what I retain from reading at MGs. I have 1GB RAM on my old Dell and I hit the max at times and notice it hang.

I just looked at more memory for your Dimension 8100 and seems very costly to me. Maybe one of the other members will have some ideas on this.

But I would not add anymore Folding software, stay with the graphic and pause it when your doing things that use higher resources (Right Click the Red Cog, Click Pause Work) You can resume it later, same way just click Resume Work. You can also lower CPU usage and if you're watching the Proteins lower that rate too.

Your PC will fold at a slower rate when your using the PC due to the FAH software giving you back the resources that you need for your PC to function. And yes if you log off FAH Graphic does stop, sorry my error. Switch users it does not stop. (on my PC)

Look at it this way, every WU we turn in no matter how long it takes us is one step closer to a cure and helps their research. We all contribute, just some have faster computers but every WU counts.

As for your other question about what project, whatever project you want is fine, we just fold to try to help, you can use this forum even if you aren't on this team. Some members that help here are on other teams but help answer questions here.

MajorGeeks is in this project and Alzheimer's disease is part of the research, you can look at Purpose here:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Folding@home

Hope I have answered some of your questions, others might have suggestions for you.

    Thanks Cat_w_9_lives,
After defragmenting, I'm picking up speed, it went from estimated finish of august 12 (I'm worried), now it's 5 days to finish (not so worried anymore), under 4 minutes per frame...(used to be 30 minutes/ frame... then 8 or 9...) so I think it's settling in. and what I'm working on is 2500 frames. Almost 500 done= 1 day(+ a little).
...Only a few years ago 384MB was a good size ram???
    Now I see new PC's with 5 GB???...Ram?
My son has a few tricks up his sleeve, he builds PC's from scratch from spare parts, like I remodeled houses,,,
I added onto houses, I can add onto a PC.
Is it worth it to add Ram now, or I can envision getting something practically new for a better investment...
maybe I'll look at another forum thread... like hardware... memory...
    Thanks Cat_w_9_lives... :highfive

I would reccomend a new PC, but I build a new one for myself every 6 months or so. If you can up the RAM in your PC to 512Meg or 1 Gig, I think you will have a pretty good improvement.

Build a new one, keep the old one as a spare, and pretty soon you will have a 'Folding Farm'... :-D

    Hey Fred_G..,
We are on the same page!,
I'd love to have 2 PC's, then I can take one apart (And put it back together...:-D)
    while the other is working,
    ..........and then vice versa.
There's not really any other way, because I can't live without at least one computer running.
I can hardly believe the PC I had in 2004 (not new, but great for e-mail) only had 2 GB total memory???
(My ex-wife plays games on it now)
Then the next question is about external hard drives, and other stuff like that, to boost memory.
And motherboards, this is in hardware department , right?:hammer
    I got work to do:-D

LOL, RAM is system memory, hard drive space is storage. Heck you can build a beast for around $700!

can i download another F@H ..."console" ... while I am administrator (as one different account on same computer... administrator = duhman)
    limited account = dnnyo
... dnnyo = running F@H good as graphics ... but slow...
    the question is-
"when I switch from dnnyo to duhman... (limited to administrator),
    then F@H quits,,,
so can I do console then on the same computer with a different account???
