I did a thread like this a few years ago and it was pretty interesting so thought I'd give it a go again.:)

Post some of your local news paper or TV news headlines about the good things going on in your area. Story discussion encouraged!

Here's one headline from The Florida Times Union that I consider good news because I'm optimistic enough to hope that it's an eye opener for those that think the current economy is the end of the world so to speak.

Surviving Tougher Times: Those who lived through the Great Depression relied on humility and resourcefulness to overcome far worse economy than we face today. The article went on to interview a few people age 85 to 92 about what it was like then vs what it's like now.

My opinion? People take far to much for granted these days. They look for the easy way and quick fixes. We rely far to much on the $ rather than what is so much more important...people in general and actually living life to it's fullest.

Either way is fine.:) I didn't do links to the local news in the other thread b/c the site loads so slow due to all the ads & pop ups they run. It really sucks big time.:(

The news paper article I refreneced in this thread I took from the paper sitting next to me...haven't looked yet to see if it's on the site but will do so now. I found it to be a very interesting read.

Well for the life of me I can't find a single piece worthy of the title good news.
I heard of a group of volunteers who are going to do repairs on the homes of people who are either financially or physically unable to.
If I come across the article, will post it.

    Great thread idea AbbySue :)

Local good news for me just has to be the Olympic Trials 2008 which start later this week. So many of the world's best athletes will be coming here to try and succeed in gaining entry to the next Olympics. This has involved huge preparation for what is actually a very small city. You can see more about the event here http://www.eugene08.com/

I have a wonderful wife and three great kids. We're all pretty healthy, we have a roof over our heads, three meals a day (and then some), clean water and we know where we're going. It won't make the newspapers, but it's good news to me.
    Cheers,

    doo-doo-doo,do,do,do,do-do-do, this just in,,,,,

A convicted felon goes back to prison for 2 yrs for being in possesion of exsplosives

Seems he was a passenger in a car that was pulled over, driver was found to have a pistol under the seat, felon was searched also, the officer found fuses in his pocket and was about to let him go, even though he was in a vehicle with a gun (a no-no for felons). Before the felon could leave, a tow truck driver, called in to tow the vehicle, noticed something under the passenger side of the vehicle, turned out to be a pipebomb. The officer put two and two together, and now the felon is in the pokey for two years :-D

    Howz that for good news?

I don't have a link to this first part but there is a link for a pdf of the newsletter about the marathon.

1.) Many of the regulars might recall that I was selected 2½ years ago to participate in a breast cancer research program. For those that don't know this, the program involved an extensive family history and getting not only an annual mammogram, but also a breast MRI. The purpose of the MRI was to show that MR's detect cancer's much earlier than mammograms alone.

I'm happy to report that the study was overwhelmingly successful! Based on the findings, the American Cancer Society now recommends that women & men who fall within a certain percentage based on personal and family history should not only get yearly mammograms & MR's but that they also be examined every 6 months instead of once a year. As a result of these recommendations by the ACS, insurance companies will now pay for the MR's & 2 visits per year with the Dr. WooHoo!!!

2.) We had the first annual Breast Cancer Marathon here and the results are in! I was unable to participate but the runners & walkers came right by where we live. I sat there on the patio watching...emotionally overwhelmed by the people that just kept coming & coming...there were so many...I still can't get over it. The marathon was a huge success!

If he lives up to his name, it's no wonder you like your doctor rolleyes:-D

but, seriously, isn't it nice when you get to see your efforts have an impact :cool

8 month's ago the Doc's found a lump on my wifes left breast, it was small, but, they did a sonogram and confirmed the lump, the doc said all he could do was have her come back in 6 month's, to see if it grew. Luckily at the next check they determined it was a fatty cyst, and since we have changed our diets and she is losing weight, it was shrinking. That was a HUGE relief.

Seeings how her family has a high occurence of cancer, this won't be the last time we have to deal with this, so anyone who helps to increase the ability to receive preventitive health care, is aces in my book :cool

We wern't, but when dealing with ins., you have no choice, trust me it was hell, I tried to get the doc to do a biopsy immediatly, but he just treated me like a ridiculas worry wort, I had to leave before I did something that would bring the cops. She has a history of cancer on both sides of her family, her dads sister both died of breast cancer, her mom survived lung cancer, just to turn around and get taken out by stomach/liver cancer. But, to the doc, that didn't matter, his advice was "wait and see"

Don't get me wrong, I'm usually a pacifist, but, when it comes to my wife, I would kill or die for her, I definatly wanted to pass-a-fist across his head :-D

sorry for hi-jacking the 'good news' thread

    Yes it is...and thank you.:)

Oh yeah...I had an awful time NOT crying...it was amazing.

    ACK! Me either!

Insurance companies can be a royal PITA for sure. There should have been no delay and a biopsy done right away, especially when considering the family history. I am however so very glad to hear that all is well.:)

I had to have a biopsy 5 years ago, turned out ok...was a compound cyst. My first year in the research program I had my annual mammo immediately followed by an MRI. Something showed up on the MRI that didn't even show up in the mammo so I had to go in for a more thorough MRI (4,500 - 5,000 images are taken) under sedation. After all the images were reviewed I was scheduled for a biopsy...turned out to be a fibroadinoma which is a non-cancerous growth.

Although I was lucky enough to be ok, it just goes to show how much more the MRI can detect. Because of family history I am on the every 6 month exam and yearly mammo w/ MRI. I don't feel as apprehensive as I did because I know that if I should follow in the tracks of my mother, grandmother & gr. grandmother it will have been caught much sooner.

And how may I ask did you hijack my thread? LOL I said discussion encouraged...I think seeing how members relate to different articles and what not is what will make this thread all the more interesting.:)

It's sad really as I've been trolling the local news haunts now for a couple of days and have found nothing yet. This is with 1M+ people in the 'local' area. I mean besides the ones that read '70 child porn users arrested' etc. This is a 'good news' story though I don't think this was the intent of the thread AS.

I can't say I had specific types of stories in mind for this thread. If a story has a good outcome, despite it's content then it's good news!:)

In regards to the story you mentioned, it as you say is good news. Far to many people get away with stuff like that so one more person being caught, to me anyways, helps in restoring my faith in our legal system.

    Finally, some good news,,

A father and son runs the local Qwiki Mart, they were arrested for Lottery fraud, seems if people didn't know the value, they would give them less and keep the difference
I stopped going to this store, even though they have the lowest priced gas, by 5 cents/gallon, because I noticed, if you gave them exact change for a purchase, they would hit "no sale" on the cash register. I hate cheats.

Now, what comes next is why I call my town (even though I love it), a podunk town, now mind you, there were 6 lottery law enforcement officers, packing heat and wearing bulletproof vests, at the store,,,
I changed the name to protect the stupid
