OK, I googled Paypal, and am at the screen to set it up. Geez, how do I know if it is secure or not, or even Paypall. Call me mr. conspiracy... You google a site, then enter cc info... And yeah, I buy off NewEgg, just being paranoid.

but really, how do you know? Looks legit, but I have never used PayPal before.

I have been told that secure sites start with (https) rather than just http. And also look for the padlock in the address bar.

Along the same vein, I've been getting what look like phishing emails for 2 days about a "disputed payment on paypal"........ I don't use paypal?????

    Reported them as phishing.

Been using Paypal for years. No problems. Great way to not enter your bank/credit card details and pay bills online too for those company's that accept it.

I never respond to paypal email but rather go to the site through my bookmarks or typing in the address. I get fake emails and report them practically weekly.
No complaints about paypal itself though.

The easiest way to ensure you always go to the legitimate (NOT phished site) of Paypal, or any other website, is to either A) manually type the address in the address bar (for example, actually TYPE https://www.paypal.com instead of clicking on the link), or B) creating a bookmark for it and only using the bookmark to visit the site (easier and faster). Phished (fake) websites will almost always look EXACTLY like the real site. The only way to really prevent your data from falling into the wrong hands is to rely on your OWN bookmarks and two typing hands, instead of links on websites.

Paypal is, I believe, the number ONE phished website... so definitely be extra careful when using it. Of course, you can't type the address in the bar when purchasing something, but if you purchase something by clicking on a Paypal pay button, you can always double check that the START of the URL in the address bar is "https://www.paypal.com/" (make sure the slash is after .com).

Interesting topic as I just signed up too, and as I have already setup a separate bank account just for paypal, my exposure is limited to what is in there which will usually be a couple of bucks. Gf is very nervous when I buy using her platinum CC, can't say as I blame her as it's her name on there. I'm just waiting for the deposits now to get verified.

copy exactly or paste the following line into the browser to check your website authenticity.

    javascript:alert("Real Web Address"+location.protocol+"//"+location.hostname+"/");

Setting up a special webmail address, rather than your normal email is a good idea for PP.
I have this and receive offers and notifications from Wells Fargo and other American banks I don't deal with, from time to time.
The only outfit I have ever given this address to or used for is Ebay and Paypal.

You can deposit money right into your paypal account.

What I understand is that Paypal will first make 2 deposits of some cents and when I see those transactions to copy them into their verification page to prove that it's my account and not someone elses. This could be an extra hoop for Canadians to jump through, IDK.:confused

As to that, I don't trust anyone so my main acct is safe no matter what happens. I have heard of some Paypal horror stories so this way, I don't know if I'm being overly paranoid but I feel safe this way.

I did the same thing, it's just to make sure the account you gave is real. I've never even been to Canada

Hmm, I just remembered they said 3-5 business days so I guess I'll spend my time waiting making wish lists.;) Which reminds me, I better post in hardware to get some opinions.

Google Checkout will give you a special $10 off coupon at most retailers that accept GC. You cannot use paypal to pay for GC though... I was hoping Google would create more of a war than they did and that PP would offer coupons. Alas....rolleyes
