Every year California has wildfires, evacuations but it seem as of lately it's getting worse. This year over 1,000 fires are burning at the same time, most uncontained.
Governor Schwarzenegger has asked all fireworks be discontinued.

The air is always bad here in Armpit but the news has warned even healthy stay indoors due to the (extra) particals in the air.

The whole community of Big Sur, a beautiful area along the coast on Highway 1, yet woodsy, has been evacuated.

I have heard a call for anyone with animal trailers to help. People do step up in times like these, bless them.

Heres a map to give you an idea although I don't think all are on here.

Bummer! In central New York we have plenty of rain. I love west and southern states, upshot here is plenty of water and no hurricanes or earthquakes.

    Stay safe Darlene!

I was in the Sierra Nevada region of CA years ago. I still remember a burned area with a little green spot with some trees and some grass and a house with a huge Thank You sign to the fire department.

Thanks, yes I've seen black areas right up to houses, inches, lots of thank you and bless you signs to the firemen.

Today of all days,IMO, fireworks can be set aside and replaced with a thank you and a helping hand to all the fire fighters and volinteers who are trying to stop an enemy of man being the fire just as did all the soldiers and volinteers whose job it is to keep this great country safe from evil. The fire works can be seen in the smiles of all the thankful people whose homes and property and especially their live have been saved.

I hope this makes as much sense as I think it does.
    and stay safe Darlene

Here near Sacramento, the fireworks sales are down 60%, which is good except that the stands are usually run by non-profits or for community benefits, so some people have simply been writing checks as a 'donation' to those charities, so they don't suffer due to anti fireworks campaign. :)

I'm all for no fireworks this season, we finally have had some smoke free days, some were in the 200 particulate range, very bad, very very bad. The news showed pics of the foothills to the east of us, the delta breezes had pushed the smoke out of the valley into the hills, it looked like a foggy day with about 300 yards of visibilty, they told them to stay inside, crazy times.

So, what's worse fires in the west, or floods in the midwest?

    what say you all?

California is very nice in areas, but mother nature never seems to give that state a break. Be safe and get out of there if fire even comes close to your area.

Well as it turned out there was a fire works display at the collage and fireworks stands said they sold out on the 4th.
They had asked people to purchase them and save lighting until after the fire danger was over.
The fireworks stands are strictly charitable organizations some this being their only drive.
Heard lots of works in the neighborhood too. Humm Gov. Who?
Myself I caught the last half hour of the Boston Pops and fireworks on the Charles River on TV. Can't even imagine what that must have been like in person.

We had a nice city sponsered display here in "slodi", and not as many personal ones, they're not legal here but that never stopped them before ;)

The fire trucks only went out once, normally it's a dozen at least on previous 4th's

we've cleared out real nice, can't smell it, for now, but did you see the news about the foothills above sac? Looks like foggy days up there

There was an article in the paper yesterday, it was about the effect of the smoke on farms, not just the workers but the actual crops and animals, everything seems to be uneffected except the grapes. They said the grapes could end up with a "smokey" flavor, could make for a "unique" tasting vintage, weird huh? :confused

Thats good to hear. Aw poor animals, some wild ones have come out of the wood into peoples yards, sad.
Just might have hit on something there with the grapes, to be served with bar-b-que :-D

That's the problem with ruthlessly quenching the forest fires. The under brush grows up and is what really fuels the fire.

that's true triaxx, one of the underbrush problems the firemen are having lately is the poison oak, the smoke from them is getting in the lungs and skin

Does California allow burning off, in the off season, to reduce the undergrowth and combustibles?
Here in OZ it is a regular occurrence in most States. Bazza

Only fire depts. are allowed to do that. Actually thats how a lot of fires get out of control every year

Here on the north side of syracuse, they were standing in the streets popping off all sorts of fireworks... and they are illegal in NY.... go figure. I saw more fireworks in my neighborhood than I did anywhere else.

Best wishes to CA and everyone affected by the wildfires
