OK, time for another episode of "How come my audio doesn't work?". When we last left our hero, he had decided it was time to build a new PC......let's pick up the story there.....

About 6 months ago, I decided it was time to replace my old PC and build a new one. I decided to go with the ECS GF7100/7050PVT-M3. Installation went smoothly and everything was working fine until one day I went to play some MP3's and realized that I had no audio.

I went into the Device Manager and found the following under "Other Devices":

?! Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus

I decided to go to the ECS website and download/install the latest drivers. The system was unable to install (or for that matter even find) the drivers(even when I pointed to the specific location), and I received the message
    "This device cannot be used".

I uninstalled all of the audio drivers on the system (including legacy, etc), I also went into the software install/uninstall and uninstalled the IDT Drivers software, then rebooted - same result.

Next at the suggestion of ECS, I reflashed my BIOs, no dice.

Then, after reading some of the posts here, I edited the system registry and removed the KB888111 entry.

When I rebooted, I found that I now had two entries with a ?! next them:

    - Under "Other Devices" - Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus

and under "Sound, Video, and Game Controllers" I also have an entry that says - IDT High Definition Audio CODEC.

At this point, I ran the install hardware utility, first on the IDT HD Codec, which installed correctly (ahhhhh, progress!
"This device cannot start. (Code 10)"

Then I ran the utility for the Audio Device on the HD Bus and received the message:

"The Drivers for this device are not installed".

I didn't just fall off the pumpkin truck yesterday, I've worked in IT for 26 years, and solving tricky problems kind of comes with the territory, but this one has me pulling out what little hair I have left.

I'm very tempted to call ECS back and say "hey, are you sure I have all the HD Audio drivers", but thought I'd check here first.

Isn't there a Windows XP UAA bus driver that needs to be on my machine to make this work? Could that be the problem?

Tune in next week to find out what happened - will he drop kick his PC out the window? Decide to use it as a door stop or just pretend to listen his favorite music in complete silence?

You probably do need the UAA drivers from Microsoft. Try getting 'em from Windows Update. Maybe more info about UAA will help; you can find details here:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/835221/en-us
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/888111/
KB835221 is a UAA HD audio driver add on for Windows XP, 2003, 2000, and Windows 2008 Server. KB888111 is the actual driver and is reference by KB835221. For details, visit the links above. You'll find that trying to download these things from Microsoft is almost impossible without requesting a support ticket or whatever they call it. But you can download these hotfixes from a 3rd party site. Here's the link:
    http://hf.xable.net/
Scroll down until you see the hotfix needed, then click the green 'Download' over on the right.
HP/Compaq also has a UAA driver you can download:

    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...=ob-45977-2&cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en&dlc=en&lang=en

Good luck! I hope this helps!

dnnyo, last I saw was that you were checking that you downloaded the right driver. Never saw you post back what was happening.

Cool, I'll give this a try and post my results. Thanks for the help - this one has been a real pain in the :***
