I have to reformat however, I do not know how, my former took care of the computers rolleyes would not teach the girls !
I was told to update to AVG 8, made a mistake and removed 7 before I updated and now it says I cannot update without XP SP 2. If I try to update or add SP2 the computer crashes. Now that I have removed AVG, I tried to to a sys restore and it will not let me, says system is corrupted.
I do not know what I can download free.
I cannot find AVG 7 anymore . The last time I tried to download an older version of QT it had a Trojan in it.
I need some help to keep this running until I can do some backups ( had surgery and need to get the right disc it will not let me back up with DVD R says wrong type of disc)
Ok, I am newbie and I mess around too much with things I do not know on the computer, most of the time I can get my self out, but this time I cannot , HELP, Please!

I cleaned with Avast and it got several trojans and one virus , but there were about 20 files it could not scan and now I cannot do a system restore.

Well, you can't have avast! and AVG at the same time anyway. Sooner or later they will fight each other and jam your computer. To begin with you need to run CCleaner or clean cache, cookies, temporary Internet files etc. in some other way. Then visiting a couple of online scanners would be a very good idea, I think. This here is the link for Kaspersky and this here is the link for ESET NOD32.

Also I believe that a malware check in MajorGeeks Malware Removal Forum would the right way to finish this project. This here is the link for the guidelines.

When you are clean you should visit Microsoft Update.

About repairing a failed uninstall of AVG, well, the method from AVG's homepage will help in most cases. Link here. If this also fails you need to download the latest version of AVG from Majorgeeks here.

    1. Double-click on the downloaded file so that it runs
    2. Now an AVG window should ask you what you want and there should be an uninstall option there which of cause is the one you need
    3. Then check Add/Remove Programs. It should be gone from there
    4. Run CCleaner

EDIT: Actually this is the same method twice. Never mind - You get the point. I hope? :)

Thank you I will try this. I just have Avast on to scan once a week. I keep it shut off the rest of the time. It has a conflict with zone alarm which the company knows about but cannot do anything about.
I am running bit defender right now. Then I will what you suggested. Are you saying that if I do the things you suggested I will then be able to download AVG 8. I still need SP2. I have heard it is not good to download that. I only use Firefox, except when IE is the only way I can use something, Bitdefender, Trend etc. I still do not have an anti virus on my machine.
I will get back once I have tried your suggestions.
    Thank you

AVG says I cannot download without SP2, I have tried several times. I un-installed AVG 7, before I realized I was not going to be able to use AVG 8. The last time I tried to update or add SP2 the computer crashed.
I have tried to do a sys-restore but it says there is an error and now all my restores are trashed.
So, as soon as bit is finished I will start trying to do what you suggested in your first post.
    Thanks again. :)

Yes, removing the rest of the malware just might get you somewhere. And installing SP2 on a dirty machine is a really bad idea. So a thorough malware removal is the thing to go for. The malware guys may actually be able to kill the rest of your AVG, if you're lucky. :) If not, we will just have to address that issue afterwards.

    Thanks :)
I am ran cc, I am now running my 3rd anti virus and then I will start on the malware. I will get back after that. I am assuming do not try to add AVG with SP2 until I have all of this done and hopefully I have a clean machine. With no restores and not being able to backup, wrong DVD's I cannot risk a crash. I assume once this is clean, I shut off sys restore, go into safe mode and check as much as I can, then go back turn on restore, and set a new restore point. The old ones are trashed anyway, so I am being very careful with what I am doing.
Thanks for all the time you are spending helping out, I truly appreciate it!

You should have only one antivirus program installed. It is true that you can have two or even three anti-spyware programs installed. But the general rules are:

    1. Have a firewall installed. But only one = disable Windows firewall if you install an other
    2. Also have an antivirus program installed. But only one
    3. Also have antispyware programs installed. You can have one, two or three

Malware is word that is used as a term for all viruses, spyware, adware etc. It simply means malicious software. Here you have Wikipedia's entry for it.

I have no anti virus programs installed. Today I made the mistake of trying to update AVG from 7 to 8 and deleted 8.

I got rid of avast, because I was only using it to scan -real time was causing a problem with zone alarm.

    I have Zone Alarm free
    AD Ware 2007
    A squared free

I am running the online virus checks, Bit Defender, then House Call, now Karaspersky,( which is taking forever to run then I will do the last one you suggested.

I do not have any anti virus program running and that is a concern.
I did not realize that Window XP Pro SP1 had a firewall.
Do I need to shut that down.
I cannot find a free AVG 7 to download until I can get this cleaned.
    :eek::eek::eek:

In all likelihood ZoneAlarm turned Windows Firewall of for you. Besides a growing number of firewalls are manufactured so that they don't battle Windows Firewall, so take it easy.

It's true that you need malware cleaning before installing again. And you need to get rid of AVG also. Also there is a special uninstaller for avast! that you need to run - Add/remove programs left quite a number of files behind that will harm your PC. This is the download link.

AVG 7.5xxx is available here at MGs but will only be updated until the end of this year. I was thinking if you could remove your hard drive and put it in as a slave in a friends computer to get your backups done and then reformat the thing if you have an XP Disc or the recovery discs.

    ladyraven Private E-2

I have the XP Pro disc and key. I do not know how to reformatt. Hmm, most of my friends have laptops. I am not sure if anyone would let me do what you are asking, I can ask, however, I am in a new area and the women I know would be afraid to do this I think.
I do not have the dis for Office 2003, the X kept it , however, I think I can download open office if I need to.
Is there a place online that teaches you how to reformat a hard drive? So, the main problem is making the backup?
I will download AVG again, however, I think there is a problem that I have not found. AVG was not finding anything. Bit Defender found something, Avast found problems when I first used it and then , whatever it is , locked certain files. I am hoping I can get to it.
A friend has a extra liscense for McAfee and is trying to get it from her husband so I can download it and clean this. However, I need to clean this up, and get XP2 on correct>
Wow, I bet you are sorry you answered this thread! :eek:rolleyes
Thanks for all the help.... last online virus is running and then I move to malware ,,,,,,,,,

Perhaps you can avoid the reformat - there's a lot of other ways of sanitizing a computer. It's a problem to loose an office pack. When the PC is cleaned and AVG is gone, you could try the free Avira Antivir. It is probably the best freeware antivirus program there is...

Running through the malware, however, I still do not have an anti virus on this computer. That AVG was spyware not anti -virus and I cannot seem to find a safe site for free avg 7 or 7.5 anti spyware.

What error messages do you get? We need you to write them down. Text and numbers, please. :) Or screenshots. Your Windows Installer could be damaged. Try these guidelines from this blog. Also did the avast! uninstaller tool run as it should? Did the scanners find any malware?

I could not get back on for hours I have been up all night. The anti virus links were not good , the first stopped in the middle gave me a blue screen and then crashed the computer. I rebooted and downloaded another one, it would not work and totally froze my computer. I went into safe mode and was finally able to remove it and now my computer is working , barely, but no anti virus. Also the malware program Super Anti Sypware was fighting with the AVG Spyware we put on. Everything kept freezing when I reboot. My registry cleaner says that my registry health is medium, it was high. I may now have a problem with installer, I am not sure.
I have been working on this from 5 pm, to 7 am today. I think I need to try to get some sleep and then think about this.
Thanks for all your help. I know something will work soon............:crybaby

That is strange, the first one I used from Texas got me the blue screen with error and dumping of memory , I have not had that in months. Then I tried another from Florida and it just froze my computer.
I am not sure what to do, when I wake up I am going to re read everything and start over again. I know there is a way to do this........I am just too tired to think having bee working on this for so many hours. Thank god for safe mode! And, I am being careful with no backups and no system restore points !

The online scanners are both excellent - Majorgeeks recommends Kapersky Online scanner. :) The problem is inside your PC. But I'm confused about AVG and SUPERAntiSpyware. They don't conflict unless you have the payed-for version of SUPERAntiSpyware. You can't have two antispyware programs with realtime protection running at the same time and realtime is only available in the payed-for version of SUPERAntiSpyware.

You can however install additional antispyware programs without realtime protection besides your main one for additional protection. Most users have that.

But really, you need to go to the malware section here on Majorgeeks now. There is nothing more you can do yourself. Good luck and come back to this thread and tell us how it went. Then we can help you with the rest of the issues.

    If you go here
    Code:
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_avg_antivirus/
you can download any version of AVG free that you want. I downloaded 7.5.524 from here last week and installed it on a computer to replace two other out-of-date av products.

Re: 2 Problem, AVG -online storage to tranfer files to new computer, computer will no

    Hi Again!
The computer crashed and was trashed. I have it up and kind of working now. A friend is lending me one of their extra computers.
My computer is too old 6 years and will not recognize the item I am trying to put the files on. I have gone to my computer and it keeps saying to put it in drive f, there is no drive F. And it is saying what I put in needs to be in a high speed port, or it will work slow. However, the computer is not even recognizing what I am putting in.

Can anyone suggest a good easy to use - online storage that will allow me to download , pictures, files and music to the new computer. I need to store 5 G. I cannot pay allot for the storage. Mozy has a glitch it will store you information, but only download to the same computer, it will not recognize the new computer it is a glitch in there system they have not fixed yet.
Help , Please... glad I got this back working.

Thanks for all your help. I did what was suggested on Malware, the computer crashed. I give up! A friend is lending me one of her extra computers. I am now having trouble getting the information off the computer , read above.. any help would be appreciated you guys are awesome!!!!!! Love you all!

I'm using computers older than that with no problem.
Buy an external enclosure, put the trashed hd in it, hook it up by USB port to another computer and get the information off.
As far as the computer not recognizing a USB flash drive...that means that your USB controller isn't working properly. XP is strictly plug and play for USB storage devices.
One problem I see, you have 5GB of files. Make sure they are all files than 4 GB and do NOT try and move everything at once. Why? Flash drives and external hard drives are usually formatted FAT32 so they an be seen in windows, OSX and linux. But FAT32 has a size limit of 4GB. If you try and transfer more, you might lose everything.

  31. ladyraven

    ladyraven Private E-2

Thanks, it will not even recognize what I am putting in the USB port, so , I have not even tried to transfer anything.
I have a total of 5 to transfer but no file is bigger than maybe a gig, I think most her much less.

I am not sure I understand or can do what you are suggesting. I think it is over my head! :-( I am a newbie, ck the profile... however, I am still trying. I have to do something before the old one crashes and I have nothing to transfer
Also, how do I find out how to transfer my Fav's from Firefox, I have allot! Also , my library from Windows Media file. Sorry to be a pain, I am willing to learn, just a bit slow at all this!

Exporting (save bookmarks to a floppy or a flash drive).
I'll assume you are running v2 on one computer and will import the bookmarks into v3 on nother computer.
    1. Click on Bookmarks then Organize Bookmarks
    2. In the window that opens, click on File then Export
    3. The name will be bookmarks.html (already filled in), all you need to do is select where you want to save it. You can also put it on the desktop and email it to your self with the bookmarks.html attached to the email message, then it will be stored on the server where your emails are.

To import (version 3) is slightly different.
    1. Click on Bookmarks , then Organize
    2. In the window that pops up, click on Import and Backup
    3. Since we assume you are backing up from version 2, select the option Import HTML and point it to where the bookmarks.html file is

I can't help you with Windows media file because I don't have anything.

Now when I said buy an external enclosure, I did not mean to connect by USB to the ailing computer. You take the hd out of the bad computer and hook it up to another computer that has working USB ports.

OK, I will try to explain- I am a newbie, X ran the house computers and we were not to touch them...
    1. I cannot backup! I cannot back up to external device. I tried two.. a Sony and one made by Scan- two gig sticks.
And I tried using one that I use to take pictures from my digital picture frame to my computer.. none were recognized by the computer! A friend was over, we tried trouble shooting through windows. no luck! my computer is saying the Sony is malfunctioning which is not true , he just used it on his computer. Mine just could not be found I put it in the low speed USB ports- that is all I have and it would not work. I have used these ports before with no problem
Allot of what you are suggesting I cannot do, I do not know how to attach the HD to my new computer, plus it is trashed! IT is an HP Pavillion 751n from 2001 0r2.

I need to back up picture, files and my FF bookmarks. I cannot back up with CD or DVD.. it will not let us.
I deleted 500 files last night and ran a few of my spyware programs, for the first time .. this showed up

I put everything in Quarantine. Then a windows message came up saying
Files that are rquied for Window to run properly have been replaced by unknown version - unrecognized version. Put in CD with Window CD SP1
I have no idea what to do. I put in my XP PRO CD and nothing happened, it would not read it!
I need to find an online storage system for a month or so, to put about 5 gig of my stuff on and then replace it on the new computer. Than I can worry about the old one.
I have gone through all the malware steps on this site and it was not until I deleted the 500 files that this stuff showed up.. there is Adware in house call..........in Win32 Security... I am afraid this computer is going to crash before I can get everything off it.
Anyone , please help, where can I send my information that will not be expensive. I am on disability and money is tight and my computer is my world!

Thank you in advance for you help!
