camel crickets!! in my basement!!

saw the first few in my basement about a week ago, FREAKED ME OUT and i went crazy trying to kill them all (didn't succeed, they're fast little buggers). i didn't really know what they were, but my friend said that they were camel crickets. i don't know how the heck he knew that, but i checked online later and apparently he was right. a couple of days later i was sitting on my puter (my main puter is in the basement) and suddenly i felt something like a bee sting on my toe. a looked down and saw that a camel cricket had bit me! is this even possible? when i was reading up on camel crickets online, multiple sources said that camel crickets can't bite, but one guy on yahoo answers said that they can. can anyone clarify this for me?


does anyone have any suggestions on how to remove these pests from my basement? the only thing im doing right now is having the dehumidifier on because i read that they like damp areas.

also, do they eat small ants?

I get those freak crickets every once in a while. Wierdly fast critters, never had one bite me. Wenchie has the answer, bug bomb. They are like a nuke for bugs...

Or call an exterminator and pay them some $$ to kill the bugs.

We often get those critters. Never heard of one biting somebody, though. I just kill them with bug spray. They do like dark and damp places.

 

do they at least play pretty cricket music? or are they borderline roaches? We don't have anything that ugly in these parts cept CP.

Oh now that is just hideous scorcer! I am glad I did not run into any of those when I was out West! We have Brown Recluse spiders that pack a nasty bite.

Haven't seen one of those in so long, thought maybe they were extinct :confused

 

Oh, they're still around, they can be about 2" inches long, when I grabbed one with a papertowel, crushed it, and through it in the garbage, a little while later, went in the kitchen, the darn thing was crawling out of the garbage dragging the papertowel, they are indestructable :eek

So, again, since I've never seen anything so ugly are they not like regular crickets? They don't chirp they just slink around in the darkness like some sort of insect quasimoto?

 

I don't know about the OP's crickets, but the jerusalem cricket makes a hissing sound if you make it mad

 

see, we just have sweet little black crickets that sing and chirp and are smaller than an inch.

jerusalem crickets look like the illegitimate lovechild of an ant and a wasp...

 

I have seen a few Jerusalem Crickets, but not many. We also get some kind of Indian Cricket - has legs out to the side like a frog when it crawls/runs. Now they really do look roach-like. Those I know 'sing'. Then, where I used to live, there were the giant crickets, about four inches long. Those I didn't like, especially when I dreamt one was crawling across my face when I was asleep. I woke up and found it was no dream!:eek They chirp hell loud.

 

I think any bug crawling on your face no matter how sweet and harmless it is, when you're sleeping, would freak a person the hell out.
