    hi

i'm running xp pro sp3 and my pc can't use dvd/cd-rom,

when i try to use it the pc crashes and displays a dark blue screen with the message "to prevent damage to your machine windows has closed", it identified first that the file ATI2dvag was in an infinite loop and could be corrupt or missing or maybe the hardware itself is faulty.

subsequent crashes identified a couple more missing or corrupt file; GD123.dll and hal.dll, but mostly the ATI2dvag keeps cropping up

i also got an adobe player security warning pop up telling me; about:blank is trying to contact acvs.mediaonenetwork.net.

i use firefox as my default browser but i've got explorer 7 too.

i managed to boot to the repair consul and ran R including fixboot and fixmbr. rebooted and tried sfc /scannow but the pc crashed almost as soon as i put the disk in.

i put an old hd in and the pc and dvd/cd rom worked fine with that one

a major geeker called abri spent the last few days helping me clean and disinfect my machine and fix somethings that had been mysteriously disabled. abri then suggested i now move my problem to this forum to fix the player.

i have a post with the same title as this one in the software forum if you want to see whats already been done.

would much appreciate someones help with this one

    regards, niall

First off, SP3 is still not perfect yet. Even though MS says so. It crashes AMD pcs with Intel cpu drivers. How? Ask HP.

    List your specs & config.

    hi akhilles
thanks for replying. my pc has been unusable for awhile. i got it up and running recently by replacing the vc and hdd. i copied the os across with maxblast and for a day or two all was well, crashed as soon as i tried to use the dvd rom or if i tried to install a second hdd. i thinking that there may be a corruption in the os or a stealth virus.

    i appreciate your help

xp pro sp3 (note* os was crashing before i installed sp3)
gigabyte ga-81945p mobo with award bios
    maxtor 250 gig hdd sata
    1 gig ram
    pentium 4 3ghz
    geforce 7300 se/7200 gs v/card

    thanks again

    regards,niall

Why would you update to SP3 if Windows was crashing? You need the error code. If it's a blue screen, note the 0x000000?? and any offending file and google them. If it's in Windows, look at Event Viewer for any errors (red exclamation mark) or warnings (yellow exclamation mark) under Application and System. Google those event IDs.

hi akhilles i updated to sp3 after i had my pc thoughly cleaned of malware and thought it a good time to do so. it never occured to me that it would create any more problems if anything i was thinking more stability.

thanks for the tip about event viewer, it was mainly system errors 1 and 9. fixes seemed to point to cabling or a controller so i replaced the cable and for a time could use the dvdrom then it crashed about an hour later giving me this error:

    kernel_data_inpage_error
    win32k.sys
    0x000000f7
    hope this helps

    thanks, niall

    ATI2dvag

I'd start by a video driver update.

    http://support.microsoft.com/search...ge_error&catalog=LCID=1033&spid=&mode=r&lsc=0

    0x0000007A: KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR
    0x0000007F: UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP
    0x000000F7: DRIVER_OVERRAN_STACK_BUFFER

kernel_data_inpage_error should be 0x0000007A. I think you mixed up some errors. Regardless, download memtest to a disk (floppy version is easiest), boot it up for 5+ passes, load up windows, update all your drivers.

my apologies i did write that error code wrongly, your version is correct, though i have received 0x""f7 but can't be certain of the error message with it.

i just got another crash error which read :
    0x0000007A: KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR
    atapi.sys

ran memtest ,6 passes and found no errors. all drivers are current and up to date.

Double-check your cabling/wiring in the pc. You might want to start fresh by clearing cmos & loading bios defaults. An incorrect bios setting can cause software problems.

after the error points to an optical drive. Do you have Daemon Tools installed? If so, uninstall it. This creates virtual optical drives and the problem could be with those virtual drives.

I agree have you updated your Video Drivers? Interestingly did you used to have an ATI Video Card? You may need to DL and run Drive Cleaner Pro and re-install your nVidia Driver!!

As you have listed you have an nVidia card and yet there is an issue with an ATI driver!?!

I would definitely run Drive Cleaner Pro and remove all ATI display drivers:

have completed all you suggested but still crashing when using dvd-rom
    error code 0x000000f4
a process or tread crucial to system operation has unexpectedly exited or has been terminated

Well hopefully that has cleared up the ATI2dvag errors, to me it appeared as a driver conflict!

Well when doing a little research on "error code 0x000000f4" I found that HDD or DVD/CD Drive connection in Slave mode was causing some systems to crash.

How is your HDD and DVD/CD connected to your motherboard (IDE if so are they sharing the same ribbon, SATA) and what is the jumper setting on the back of the DVD drive?

Also have you gone to MS and looked for latest updates/hotfixes as this did pop-up in research as well.

Is your device manager all good?

just completed the above task and dvd was playing well for several hours until i started to do other tasks on the pc with dvd running in the background. then...crash!
    kernel data inpage error
    0x""7a
    atapi.sys

HDD is SATA set to master
DVD/CD is IDE set to master

    MS updates are all current

and device manager is showing all things in working order

Firstly,(allision) if you don't have constructive answer to this problem don't post, cos on this site we want to solve the problem not to play games with others.

Niall,if you plug out the DVD do you have this bsod's?
Try to plug in different DVD.

It seems as though connection did play a part! It was working again for a while so explore this a bit further.

The very last option you could consider is a "firmware" update, similar to flashing a BIOS do it right or potentially kill hardware.

as long as i don't play the DVD all is fine
if try to play the DVD or install and use a 2nd HDD ... bsod

i've used different ROMS and HDD and it always ends in bsod

single HDD with no other drives working the pc is stable

thanks for responding, and enlightening allision on posting protocol

just did a firmware update and all was well.
thought i'd try a sfc /scannow which worked for about 5 mins until bsod
    error code:
    KERNEL_STACK_INPAGE_ERROR
    0x00000077

when you say write the second error code are you meaning the next code that appears between the brackets ie
    0x00000077 ( 0x00000000,0x0000000,0x00000000, 0x00000000 ) ?

ok,just got another bsod trying to run sfc /scannow. this time the error is
    0x000000f4 ( 0x00000003, 0x86f5e680, 0x86f5e7f4, 0x805d2970 )

Jumping in here to ask, "Have you tested the RAM?" I ask that because random errors (your last two were different) an sometimes signify RAM going bad.

  29. niall

    niall Private E-2

i ran 6 passes of memtest and it came back with no errors. i also removed each of the RAM sticks and and ran the pc on each individual one but it all ended in bsod.

    regards, niall
