WARNING: This is a rant :-D

I think that ought to cover everything, not just drivers. Up here, the government hires visible minorities for everything - phoning for tax help gets you some guy named Alibaba. If you even think of asking for someone who can speak English, you're hung up on.

The Alberta government just decided to provide driver training programs in 8 languages, yet our road signage is in English only - something REALLY isn't right there. In British Columbia, whose biggest city is know jokingly known as Hongcouver, the immigrants stop in the middle of the road when they get confused (even on major highways) - new immigrants to BC pay their translators to take the licence test for them, and that's happening more and more out here.

All the major construction projects here are becoming loaded with these people, and not a one of them can speak proper English. It's not as if they need the foreign workers anyways - all of Alberta's young people are stuck in 4- or 5-year apprenticeship programs. I'd like to ask the people in government if they think someone who can't complete a job because they don't know when a drill is running in reverse (I witnessed this) should be building all these oilsands plants and refineries.

Over the last 5 years, over 1000 truckers from the Middle East have been secretly brought into Canada and the United States under forged documents, and are farmed out to many of the larger outfits - most of them have never driven 18-wheelers. Nowadays, you really can say you don't know who's in the rig you just passed, and if they know what they're doing.

And, before anybody says I'm a racist, know this: I think the border should be closed to EVERYONE, then opened when we truly do need more people.

We should remove all foreign languages from every form of communication in America. Speak American English or don't speak at all. Call me a purist.. but if I went to another country to live, I would sure as hell learn their language either before I moved or in some sort of class when I arrived.

This country has become a country of diversity with out unification.

Good idea, if you can't speak English most likely you can't read the road signs.

I agree and I would also if going to live in another country learn the language as its only right to do so, similar to any non-native speaker coming to the UK or USA should learn English/USA English as their are many many issues that could arrise, medical ones for instance. Similar to abiding to the laws of the country.

France has a law in place iirc, in that any immigrant must learn the language abide my the governing principles of the country, if not they are gone, cannot remember the timescalre but think its 6 months and you have to have adiquate language skills and prove it or your gone.

I originate from the UK but moved to Belgium many years ago and with the help of my wife (she's Belgian) i learned the language but even now i have a problem with dialects for instance if you go to Antwerp the dialect is so strong that even my wife has trouble.

I know in the US they tend to write a lot of road signs as opposed to using symbols where here they are 90% symbols so are fairly universal throughout Europe which is good as we have many nationalities of truckers travelling across the borders, you still need to understand the language to an extent or you will get very quickly lost because all the road signs for diversions are written so yes i do think it's an advantage to learn the language of the country where you live.

Yeah, I don't quite get enabling people to Not learn the language.

PC crap has gotten utterly ridiculous.

If an American moves to Italy, they should learn Italian. Period. Nobody should expect others to conform to their laziness.

Yes, I know going on holiday or for short periods are a different matter in part and at least I try to learn some conversational phrases in a countries language to get by, if I was going migrating then thats as you say Laura no excuse to not learn the native language.

Small story from work, one day in one of the clinic I was walking trough, noticed a foreign chap lying on some seats and making pain noises, desk clerk asked if they where ok, he replied not in english and was gesturing he didnt understand, so an interpretor was called for, came 10mins later ( this does cost a fair amount to the hospital in getting interperators in.. lucikly in many cases as we have doctors and workers for many nationalities working in many depts its easy to find someone to translate ) and chap was then taken to A&E ( ER ) on being taken to a cubicle and a nurse turning up to check him out initally, he spoke in plain english "can I have a cup of tea" ... for that I would have personally deported him or at best charged him for the cost and waste of folks time.

What was the point?? Was he just seeing if you all would find someone? Yeah, that's pretty much BS.

That's an everyday thing here - having a 12-hour wait to see a doctor is normal because of how loaded the waiting areas are with these people - and most of them have nothing wrong with them. I think people who go to a hospital because of a cold ought to be shot.

Many of the immigrants aren't permanent residents, either - they all use the same passport, and get free medical care that we should be getting. After all, if they don't get what they want, they cry racism.

Also, I found out something interesting with the rice shortage - the immigrants up here are buying as much rice as they can, then shipping it back to their homelands for their own families.

Sounds like you have different nationalities of immigrants then the US. I suppose every country has immigrants of some kind.

Basically taking the p*** sadly as horsey mentions some folk just try to play the system and a race card, these folk live of the state and dont contribute anything!

For learning the language if your going to be resident in another country or in the case of the truckers, then not learning the countries native language is irresponsible, not just for reading road signs, but in case of accidents or needing hospital treatment ( ok if your unconscious its not going to help ) so you can tell the docs whats up, in some cases time is of the essence.

We've got every kind under the sun - the only ones that get deported seem to be those who become part of Canada, like a Chinese fellow who owned a laundromat on the other side of Edmonton who'd been here for 30+ years. He was around before the community his business was in, and set up events for the neighbourhood for free, and helped out people in need. The government got rid of him because he'd forgotten to fill something out on his immigration papers.

Alberta's getting a massive influx of Koreans right now - I'd like to know where they get all their money from :confused They're the ones buying all these McMansions, and they own most of the stores now.

Mexicans are being brought in by the truckload (literally) to work all the farms, and Calgary is now home to North America's largest mosque. I'd shoot that yelling idiot those places have always got :-D

we need to put up our virtual walls. No more hand outs. No more freebies. If you want it, you work for it. No more "services" for foreigner's to start businesses here. Shit, even American born people have a hard time starting a successful business, perhaps those kinds of services should be kept "in house".

We're taught about all the free services immigrants get in school, and it's to the point where I'd consider claiming I'm just a really lightly-coloured Asian. And people wonder why the Klan is alive and well in many of the small towns here...rolleyes

For one thing every time there is a war these young men fall in love (probably for the first time being most are right out of high school)
    WWl German brides
    WWll English (from England) French
    Vietnam Vietnamese
Gulf war and now The middle east population is growing rapidly

Personally I grew up in San Francisco so diversity was in part the charm of the city

Keeping with the thread, I did not know of such a law regarding language.

I don't mind cultural diversity - it makes a community far more interesting. I just get mad when our taxes are making their lives easier, and yet they poke fun at our traditions and values, or ignore them entirely. Heck, the RCMP allowed an Indian officer to wear his turban, and ignore the traditional hat that has always been the standard - that should NOT have been done. There was much public outcry over that, but as usual, it was effectively ignored by those in power.

True, the people who were here long ago built the country for little or nothing. Now with government grants are handed out like paper towels.

About the turban, I heard on the news they were no longer going to make them take them off at airports because it is part of their religion and there is a ritual that goes with putting it on, also time consuming. (Just passing on what I heard)

Wow. If they do that, they might as well not bother having security anymore. I imagine there would be a fair bit of room inside one of those things if it were hollow - enough, no doubt, to fit a switchblade in.

Some sort of weird, P.C. 'reverse discrimination' seems almost universal nowadays. Third world migrants usually get automatic hand outs, but if you're British, or born here - forget it. Something aint right, imo.
Back to the point, yeah I've made an effort of learning enough of the local language when in other countries to read signs and basically get by. Pretty dangerous if you don't know things like what 'Danger!' and 'Stop' mean.

Truck drivers in North America are now international. They truck from Mexico to Canada and back again. Canadian drivers also carry cargo through the USA to Mexico. If you only speak French ( Quebecois ) or only Spanish ( Mejico ) you are a trucking menace... pardon my French.

Other international cargo haulers, such as aircraft pilots, can not be licensed until they are proficient in English. They are tested against several English dialects and must be capable of carrying on a conversation in English with the airport control tower. Thats in practically every country in the world. If it has an international airport, it has an English speaking team in the control tower. :)

I know I'd like to wallop whatever idiot came up with the term "reverse discrimination" - that's like saying we're the only ones who were ever racist. Most Asian cultures, at least of what I've heard, have hated each other's guts from the dawn of time - I would imagine there has been at least one incident of racism somewhere over there.
