So i recently was told to go to the "malware" forum and do the sticky removal of all my spyware, antivirus, and malware. Well i got to a certain part, and it said i needed to restart, so i restarted and oooops. Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM . So now from following whoever told me to do that, maybe someone could help me get out of this situation....i've also tried recovery with 2 pirated xp discs and if just crashes at the repair screen....please help, much appreciated...:confused

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Sorry to hear you ran into problems. How far into the procedure did you get? What did you just run that required the reboot?

This indicates that your registry hive is either corrupted or has been deleted. You will need to do the below.

How to recover from a corrupted registry that prevents Windows XP from starting

See that is the thing i've already been to that link, and it says u need the recovery disc{s} and I've only got ones for a HP Pavilion Tower, not an HP Laptop which is what my gfs computer that i'm trying to fix is.. i tried the legit discs today and said they were unsupported..:( and of course its out of warranty so i'd have to pay for them to send me discs....it just sucks that the computer crashes when i get to the repair screen....i dont get it. I cant even start to put a fresh copy of windows on it...lol. horrible. I HATE LAPTOPS!!! But if there is anything else you can suggest that would be wonderful. Thanks for your help so far, much appreciated.

No it does not say you need recovery disks. Recovery disks are used to put your system back into the mode that the manufacturer shipped it to you. That link says you need the Windows CD. This is a bootable copy of Windows that allows you to boot to the Recovery Console which is part of Microsoft's software. It has nothing to do with your recovery CDs which HP made.

Well yes but without a copy of a Windows CD, you still cannot do it and it may be beyond your technical abilities to do anyway. I'm not sure. What I'm referring to is making the below CD

    UBCD4Win

It can be used to simplify those steps in the Microsoft procedure, but you have to understand how to use this CD to do those steps once you make the CD. This is outside the realm of things we have time to discuss in the Malware Forum.
