Hello My Name is Mitch, and Im an IT tech with a bit of a problem here. One of our customers purchased a P5GC-MX/1333 MoBo. I have installed it, got the video and such to work, but yet I got this Install new Hardware Wizard. So i click next and it wants to install MEDIA. I click to try and find a driver for it but it comes back with cannot install this driver. I have tried using the Realtek HD driver for this MoBo, and i get a Installation of this driver has failed. I have sent a ticket to asus tech support, but it will take 48hrs for them to get back to me, and i feel taht this is a bit to long of a wait, as our customer needs this computer a.s.a.p.

When i was looking in the device manager, there is an Unknown Device in the Sound, Video, Audio Controller tab. At first it have a yellow ! but now it has nothing, its liek it is fully functional, but yet there is still no sound. I then went to the Sound Options in the control panel, to test and see if there was any sound coming out of the speakers, but it says that there is no audio device. I would really appreciate any help on this matter, as i need to get this computer going as fast as I can.

    What OS are you using?
If it is XP SP2, this should work as long as you're certain the board uses Realtek HD audio.
(I'm guessing HD because that is where most of the MEDIA problems come from)

All the steps may not be available to you, but perform any that are.

    1) In Device Manager, remove the High Definition audio device (or the unknown device, if there is one) under Sound, Video & Game controllers.
    2) Go into Device Manager>System, right click the UAA Hi-Def Bus driver.
Disable the device and then uninstall it. (Do not re-boot yet)
    3) Uninstall Realtek High Definition Audio Driver (you may just have a folder that says Realtek) through Add/Remove Programs (if it's installed but not working)
    KB888111
In Add/Remove Programs, look for the KB888111 update and uninstall it. (It may have uninstalled in last step)
If you install, remove, and then re-install this update, the update is no longer listed in Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel.
Therefore, you cannot remove this update from your computer.
To work around this problem, follow these steps.
    1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
    2. Locate and then click the following subkey in the registry:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Updates\Windows XP\SP2\KB888111 (may be in SP3)
    3. On the Edit menu, click Delete.
    4. Click Yes, and then exit Registry Editor.
Run CCleaner, both the Cleaner and Registry.

Reboot, but don't let Windows install the driver.
Install your driver, then reboot, again.

The UAA should be contained in this download.

If you are using SP3, try this:

UAA HD AUDIO DEVICE SUPPORT IN WINDOWS XP SP3
This patch is required before any of the HD device drivers are installed
    1. On your PC change the CSDVersion registry key to XP SP2:
    HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Windows\CSDVersion value=200
    2. Restart your PC
    3. Install KB888111xpsp2.exe http://couponmeister.com/blog/HD_Audio/kb888111xpsp2.exe
    4. Change the CSDVersion key back to XP SP3 again:
    HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Windows\CSDVersion value=300
    5. Restart your PC, finalize configuration of your PC, sysprep and capture.

I'm skipping the normal Q&A in hopes this will do it for you. I'm not sure how long I will be here tonight.

I am actually unable to uninstall the Unknown Device, and it says "Unable to Uninstall, this device may be used to boot the system." Can you make anything of this?

Thanks for the help. Should I try those things even though i can not uninstall that device?

I also double checked with the MoBo manual, and it says Realtek HD Audio, and it has the driver on the disk as well. HOWEVER, I was in the BIOS, seeing if there was anything in there, and I had noticed that there is an AC'97 Audio option for the front panel of this particular machine. It is an HP Media Center PC m7160n, and it has the S-Video, Comostie Video 2, and HD Audio jacks(Well i think there are HD jacks anyhow) and like i said it gave me the option, for an AC'97 option for the front jacks. So then I tried to get some AC'97 audio drivers, but they will not work. I thought I mihgt as well just give it a try and see what happens.

    Thanks once again,

    Mitch

I had forgotten that the MEDIA issues were mostly on HP's.
This is not specific to that mobo, but may aid you.
Set a restore point before trying this.
    HP MEDIA Fix
    1) Install the UAA from HP,
2)Install QFE Fix - download file from http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/g...tem=pv-22533-1
Use winrar or peazip to extract its contents, goto the \src\us\x86fre folder inside the extraction. run kb835221.exe
    3) Install the SP34200 from HP

If that doesn't help, this should get the unknown audio device to uninstall.

Get the latest driver off your motherboard site.
    Your audio: http://www.majorgeeks.com/Realtek_Hi...P03_d4902.html
The UAA should be contained in this download.
Here is the UAA. (just in case) http://hf.xable.net
Save them on to your hard drive, in their own folder, after extracting them (if zipped) . That way you'll be able to run the setup.exe or find the driver files.
These next steps should unload the driver and get it to uninstall, then install fully.

Reboot into your BIOS and disable the onboard audio.
Boot into Safe Mode and go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the Realtek audio drivers.
Reboot back into safe mode. Go to Device Manager, in the menu (at top), select View/Show Hidden Devices and delete any of the Audio/Multimedia devices.
Reboot back to safe mode. Make sure the devices aren't listed.
Reboot again to BIOS and enable the onboard audio.
Boot into Windows and cancel the Hardware Wizard.
Go to the folder you created and run the setups.
Check Device Manager>System Devices to see if the UAA is in here.
If it isn't, you may want to install the one I posted before trying the driver install, but the UAA should be included with that HD driver.

    Reboot when finished installing.

    Everything should now work right?

KB888111 is the UAA Bus driver. It will show up In Device Manager under System devices. (It may also show up just as Realtek HD there, instead of UAA Bus driver).
What you basically want to do, is to remove all Realtek audio through Add/Remove Programs, make sure that the UAA is not listed in Device Manager>System (uninstall it it if it is), uninstall the KB888111 and then install the Realtek driver I supplied.
