Worst feature ever. It would be fine, but even with my relatively mediocre vocabulary, it flags words as misspelled, when they clearly are not. Such a limited dictionary onboard...

Firefox in general likes to close any website randomly, usually myspace and stuff like that. So I switched to safari :)

Safari is decent, the UI is great, but I kinda like firefox.
I'm gonna see if there is a way to deactivate the FF dictonary.
Wait! What country do you live in? It might not work right for people in UK because words are spelt a little bit different than in the states

I've never had FF close sites on me, but YES the spell checker is terrible.
    Nearly all contractions (didn't, can't, won't) show as mis-spells.

Although, they didn't show as mis-spelled above, it shows 'didn't' mis-spelled here. :confused

The dictionary can for sure be expanded with later updates, so I'm hoping they get around to that. It's aggravating to have all my words marked as misspelled in just about every message I type.

How to deactivate Spell Check in Firefox:
    Go to configuration (about:config)
    In filter, type in spell
you will see three options, one of which will be layout.spellcheckDefault
    change it to 0
    spell check is gone!
Change it back to one to re-enable it.

Safari is crap. ;) At least use Shiira you heathen.

Random closing of websites via FF is probably a corrupt prefernce file.

Quit using Firefox or just the spellcheck?

Personally I use ieSpell but as its name implies its for IE

For Firefox this is an add-on in https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3497 for USA English only and is suposed to add more to the built in one.

Just wondering, does the British or Australian version dictionaries have the same flaw?
I mean English is pretty much English.
Yeah, I know color and colour, grey and gray.
But normal hard to spell regular usage words would be about the same, wouldn't it?

    I'll pass on disabling it.

I don't use FF, except as an entry to check my e-mails at www.gmx.com

USA english deletes the "U" from nearly any word ending in "our". As stated, colour in UK and Aussie English goes to color, etc. A PITA for non-Aussies using Google and other searches, etc. Bazza

    lol :p

I guess I spell well. I never thought about it. If I don't know how to spell something, I just start typing it into my little google search box and it generally automatically goes to the word.

Where is the spell check? Does it do it automatically? I actually did an add on, but always forget I have it.

If you think that is bad, try using a non-English version gmail, and write in Swedish to your family...

    Yes, I dissabled the spellchecker.

LOL Try posting in Dutch forums and email in Dutch with FF's spellchecker. EVERYTHING is underlined in red. LOL Must be similar in Swedish!

No, I haven't disabled the spellchecker. Tried to download the American add-on version and it failed, the one that Halo wrote about. Just wanted to see the difference. But then I'm Canadian eh? LOL

  23. musksnipe

    musksnipe Guest

I DL'd the British version to compare to the American one and have just about the same flaws showing.

But as has been said, "any spellchecker is better than no spellchecker"
I mainly use it to see typos at a glance, instead of proof reading whole posts, anyway.

Seems I had gone in the wrong direction with the spell checker for Opera. Got it running now.

    Get the installer here: http://aspell.net/win32/

Then get the dictionary listed below. Wows, I got a spell checker thing now. Seems to work OK!

    It approved the above message.:-D

You can say that again and I spent the first 23 years of my life there. I forgot how to spell, whether to use the d or dt :cry

I still use the good old translation pocket books from 40 years back to check for proper spelling in Dutch but can't find a lot of words used today. :cry
The google translation is said to be one of the better ones. It's good for perhaps one word (spelling) but when using sentences it turns the sentences all around.

  32. BILLMCC66

    BILLMCC66 Bionic Belgian

It's the Dutch who turn all the words around.

i originate from UK but my wife is Belgian and we have lived here for 18 years and i still cannot get a grip of this taal

PS sorry not trying to hijack the thread will stop replies here now.

I tried installing the British and the Canadian one and FF still reads the American dictionary for some reason. I couldn't even find the the dictionaries on my drive. Help?!

  34. musksnipe

    musksnipe Guest

Look in Tools>Extensions, disable the one you don't want running.
Unless.....goes to check to see if American one is still being used.

OK, right click your typed text and choose Languages, then choose the appropiate one.

Ooh, thank you very much muskie!!! Rght-clck is what did it! I was sweating in about:config for absolutely no reason plus enabling/disabling dictionaries. I always forget to try a right-click for some reason.:dancer This has also fixed the contraction issue very nicely indeed.:cool Maybe you yanks should switch to the Canuckaduck dictionary.:p:-D

I'm sorry, just saw this. I meant the whole browser, I use iespell on IE 7. So I guess FF has it's own add on for spellig?

  43. musksnipe

    musksnipe Guest

You need to install a Dictionary (FF add-ons), make sure it's enabled, and after you type a mis-spelled word, you should see a dotted line under it
If you right click, at the end of the word, you should see the correct spelling listed.
