Now that the 2 big local PC stores are gone what is next ? seems like we are all going to be forced into buy off the inter net and if you do not have the inter net you are screwed !
hard times are going to hit the computer world if they keep closing local stores and not open new ones . You can not buy parts at best buy !
    Man this sucks !

NO but that would be a way . I think some thing needs to jump start stores again , If we have to rely on best buy for our parts we are sol is all ! Who is next to leave the retail computer theater ? there are no computer stores left in New Mexico now !

    Hi Crash

Seems that physical stores are feeling the pinch of the issues with mortgages, gas prices and general living items going up in price, so folk once money is squeezed more will goto the places which are cheaper and online tech is cheaper than stores in the majority of cases.

Yep this seems to be the case . But even they will fell the pinch as more and more people have to cut things out of there life internet being the first thing to go so getting a computer part is going to be a thing of the past if this sorta thing keeps up .

No...building a custom computer would be. There will be plenty of retailers selling OEM, with or without the internet.

    Most people buy OEM.

Going to be hard to find that new CPU you have been looking for or even that cool new HSF and video card .

Abosolutly on a PC or hardware is going to be the last thing on may folks mind, liek with all times of price increases in general life products ( food, fuel etc ) the luxury items suffer first.

Suprised at CompUSA as thats a large company and may have ridden this downturn in buying with the more profitable parts of the company, but I would likely feel they are culling their more non-profitable stores to save yearly profit margins and overheads.

As I seem to get the gist from the markets that we are heading into a global recession that many more companies will downsize or fold due to the lack of spending, there are only so many sales and price reductions you can do before its unprofitable.

It's started happening up here as well - about all that's left in most areas is big box electronics stores, and smaller computer retailers have all but disappeared. Apparently, the same can't be said for Wal-Mart, though - a month without a new one opening somewhere in Alberta is a rarity rolleyes.

CompuSmart stores have completely vanished, so I'm assuming the whole chain went under - not sure on that one, though.

Just a little FYI here. Was in Best Buy today and found out that they will Price Match any store, either online or brick & mortor.
Was in to buy a software program and complained about the price. The clerk then told the untold, so I asked her to go too Buy.com because I knew it was cheaper, so she did and they actually matched the price.:-D
They don't freely offer up this information, so complain, complain, complain. ;)
    I saved $30.00 USD :cool

Yeah well when this is the last place to get PC Parts I kind of doubt that there is going to be any price matching . Have you seen what they charge for RAM ? MY GOD ! I walked right out !

HAHAHA That is so Funny that you brought that up. That was another Huge complaint I had. Buy. com price for a 1Gig stick of Ram $40.00 - 50.00. Best Buy price $129.00.
I told her that I would be back with the print out from Buy. She says "It may not be apples to apples." Needless to say, I WILL Be Back Soon :-D

Actually, you probably got very lucky. What I have learned in my best buy experiences is they tell you something one day and the next day they are saying something completely different. I just moved to newegg.com for everything computer related.

As fuels prices go up I think personal delivery will become less of an option and more local stores with stock will come back for a short time then a few years after that no one will care about computers or shopping, just getting enough food to feed your family will be the only thing on your mind as the oil runs out :-D

    Go fusion "Waves flag!"

Walked into Best Buy and asked for a USB network adapter .....they stared at me. "Um, what is that?" .....nevermind.....shipped to me at work in two days from newegg.

Last I checked CompUSA and Tiger Direct have merged, believe it or not. I get their adverts in my email box. Since I want it I guess it's not spam. (I've bought from Tiger several times).

The local CompUSA is also Tiger Dirct now.

I figured CompUSA died because they didn't know a damn thing about computers and were only interested in selling you the most expensive option (regardless of whether it fits your needs or is even compatible with whatever you already have) so they could get a bigger commission. I've talked to Radio Shack employees with more knowledge.

Around here there are still several locally-owned stores where you can buy new or used computer parts. Chains aren't all they're cracked up to be.

CompUSA died because investors bought them and they were losing money on the retail front. CompUSA is still alive and well online. Had nothing to do with their knowledge, it had to do with other stores having more to offer and in more places.

Best Buy smacked them into oblivion here.

I have a pair of memory sticks on my desk I am battling with a manufacturer to warranty. The first two were defective and theese "are an upgrade" and so they looked nice and shiny.......

They are the wrong voltage. I finally after 9 days asked for the person higher in the food chain.

Not only at retail are they Dummies.

Customer service is not a strong point on CompostUSA or BestBuy.

Anyone here read the consumerist? Penty of good stuff about how horrible Best Buy and CompUSA really are. And a lot of other places too...

This is why I love being in the same neighborhood as a Tiger Direct warehouse!! If I don't want to wait for it to ship...as long as it shows "in stock" on the website, I can go to the outlet store at the warehouse and pick it up pronto!! I love it!! An needless to say, their prices are WAY better than "Worse" Buy or most other stores for that matter.
