I'm planning to do a road trip across the US next year.

As a lot of you are from the US i was wondering if you could suggest a route I want to do the classic NY - LA but not sure what to do in the middle.

    The brief is simple

    1. I want to see interesting things

    2. I don't want to get shot.

    Cheers

They look good but i should have explained I want to drive.

If I find a nice place I would like to afford myself a few days to stay.

I'm looking for a half version of Unchained I'm not going to stress myself if I have to fill up at a Shell but would prefer to mom and pop it as much as poss.

If you are gonna drive i hope you got deep pockets.

A trip like this one will cost approximately $4500 to $5400 USD, plus liability insurance (if you need it; my guess is you do). You may be able to cut the cost to about $3300 or less -- read on.

I have not included any costs for entertainment -- that would be in addition to all of this and will depend on what you want to do while here. There is no way I can guess that for you. We can give you ideas of what different attractions/entertainments cost, if you'll tell us what you are interested in doing or seeing while you are here.

Gasoline, food and lodging for two people per day will cost from between $140 to $180 per day, assuming you drive 400 miles per day. Some days you won't, so that may save a few dollars.

Also, I based the cost for lodging at from $60 to $100 per day. You can often find much cheaper accomodations if you look, which might save you as much as $30 per day.

My allowance for food for two people is $50 per day -- this is for eating in restaurants all the time. You can save some of this depending on how adept you are at finding cheaper alternatives at the grocery store. So let's say you can eat on $25 per day for the two of you.

A bare-bones trip like this might be as little as $3300.

A compact car is included in the above estimates and will cost about $1500 for the three weeks (one way). The price quoted includes a loss damage waiver that indemnifies you against any damage to the rental car. If you can return it to the same place you pick it up, that would save you a considerable amount of money as well. In this instance, the savings would be an additional $600, lowering your costs to about $2700.

    Distance:
The distance between Los Angeles and New York City is 2462 miles (3961 km)

Route 66 is the most historic of all roads in the US. A lot of it has been bypassed by Interstate 40 but a lot is still there. runs through the middle from California to Illinois

    Footnote -
At one time it had a TV show, there's a song dedicated to it.

How many days are you going to take? Do you like cities, or do you like country? My preferences are cities, so I'm kinda partial to that type of route.

First and foremost, if you are starting in New York, I hope you are going to be in NYC. From there, I would go south and spend a day in Washington, DC. As far as central US, I'm not sure what there is there that is of interest, maybe someone who does know could give you some ideas. You should not miss the Grand Canyon which means you should take sort of a more southern route. Go through Las Vegas and then into California.

Also, Colorado is a gorgeous state.

    Budget wise It'll be about £6000 ($12000)

I would like to get a mix of city and small town America I can probably spend about 6 weeks out there and I don't mind sleeping in the car.

New York City,Washington and Las Vegas are a must.

    Wow...that's a long trip.

I would buy a book and get some ideas of different routes and combinations of those routes so that you get the most of it.

Make sure you plan to drive up or down the coast of California. There is a lot to see there that is worth while.

I second that the drive between San Francisco (a great city on it's own) and LA is great if you take the coast road you get Monterey (bay aquarium) the Hearst mansion and Santa Barbara its a slow winding road with great views.

Fagstaff Arizona was nice. The drive from Flagstaff to Phoenix was cool, all downhill... The meteor crater Musky mentioned is neat. There is a ton to see in CA! Desert, coast, mountains...
