My PC can no longer run malware/virus checks efficiently

I am finding with the battery of programs and online scanners I use to routinely keep my PC free of malware, my PC's unable to sustain them. A scan by some of the more useful/powerful programs take in excess of 3 hours long, their memory usage usually slows the entire system down so scheduled scans in the background are impossible, and there are only a couple which allow you to schedule a Shut-Down once a scan is completed.

Should I persevere? Or should I scale things back?

I don't have any malware/virus problems but I would like advice to optimise my scan/cleaning routines.

    Thanks in advance.

Run this Using MGtools so I can see exactly what you have. Make sure you download and use the current version of MGtools.exe. Attach the requested MGlogs.zip file.

Note: Most intensive scans will slow a PC down and can take even much longer than 3 hours. Some programs can change how much they slow your PC down by changing their priority to a lower number but this will make it take even longer to run. It is best to not try to do anything else while scanning anyway. Schedule it to be done while you are sleeping. If you used a program that ran extremely fast, odds are that it was not doing a detail scan of your whole PC and all files. Thus potentially you would miss lots of problems. So do you want to be sure you are clean? Or would you just prefer a fast scan that is going to miss alot? ;)

I think this has happened to me before, but I can't get at the direct .exe link, I can only download the .php link file.

Make sure you have checked the Remember Me box and also disable any popup blockers that could be getting in your way. If that fails to help, try a different browser as the issue is with something on your end.

Based on only this log. You are not having malware problems. I recommend you try uninstalling some items you installed. It also looks like you install ZoneAlarm after the problems began based on the folder date.

Try uninstalling and rebooting after each uninstall, the below in the order give. Do a test after each uninstall to see if your conditions improve. Other than things like this, I suggest you post in the Software Forum. Also I suggest getting more RAM.
    • SocketShield
    • SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition
    • AVG Free 8.0

I only uninstalled and reinstalled Zonealarm after my recent problem (which was fixed) re the new Windows update/Zonealarm conflicting with my router.

When you say do a test, what sort of things can I do to do a test? Also, are you sure I should uninstall AVG 8.0? It is my only real virus scanner.

My SDRAM RAM slots currently have the maximum 768 mb installed.

I'll go about uninstalled Socketshield and Superantispyware, but I don't know if I should leave my PC AVG-less for too long?

The test is to see what impact they have on scan times and that is all. It was not a permanent thing it is just a test. As I said previously, you are not having malware problems. You don't really even have to do any of this, if you don't want. There is nothing wrong with your PC! Three hours (or more) scan times are not unusual especially for AVG8. Most people have found the AVG8 is much much slower than previous versions. Also it is much much more of a resource hog than it used to be. In addition, newver version of ZoneAlarm are also very resource hungry. So between ZA and AVG8, you are probably using more RAM than you used to.

I've noticed a small speed-up, so thanks for that. I am wondering if it's safe to leave my PC on overnight and have these programs run their scans through my C Drive and my portable hard drive. I am worried about the heat generated by both devices and letting them be left on overnight is scary for me.

Most seem to have the option of shutdown after completion, is that safe to do in the event of them finding something and then shutting down the system so the malware/virus moves?

    Thanks again chaslang.

It should not be an issue. You only really need to run full scans once or twice a month unless the PC is used for lots of careless surfing (teens????).

This is not really a problem either. What would you do any different if you were sitting there. Sooner or later you are going to have to shutdown/reboot. For some malware, it is the only way to remove it. The only time you really would not want to shutdown is after running scans like we request and attaching the logs. If you shutdown after attaching the logs then what you posted in the logs may no longer reflect the current status of the PC.
