I previously ran the R&R on my laptop and have just completed it on my desktop. My (5 yr old) desktop has been freakishly slow for quite a while and I did the normal preventative measures: Ran SpyBot, defrag, etc. I found today, after running the various programs, that there were some problems. Please let me know if there are any additional steps I need to take at this time. Thank you so much!

You need to attach the log from MGtools.

Malware is not the cause of your PC being slow. It is the specs of your PC that is the main problem. You only have 128 MB of RAM which is way too low to properly run Windows XP and most of the other applications you are running including your security suite from Verizon. I see Version Internet Security Suite and I also see Radial Point Software Security Suite. Are they the same thing or are they separate programs?

Also you recently upgraded to Windows XP SP3 which probably even made your PC slower than it was before.

I will give you some minor tweaks below but you will not be able to speed things up until you add more RAM. You really should have 1 GB but you need to upgrade to at least 512 MB at a minimum.

Uninstall SUPERAntiSpyware now since we are finished with it.

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {327C2873-E90D-4c37-AA9D-10AC9BABA46C} - (no file)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Motive SmartBridge] C:\PROGRA~1\VERIZON\SMARTB~1\MotiveSB.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
    O4 - Global Startup: Windows Desktop Search.lnk = C:\Program Files\MSN Toolbar Suite\DS\02.01.0000.2217\en-us\bin\WindowsSearch.exe
    O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present
    O15 - Trusted Zone: http://*.mcafee.com

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now we need to use ComboFix to remove a bunch of malware files.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

    Now run Ccleaner!

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now! I don't expect any miracles since your problem is really an inadequate amount of RAM.

    chaslang-
I am aware that I have a rediculously low amount of RAM on my PC. When I origninally bought it, I don't think I was that aware of the limited space at the time. (Plus, I do more now than five years ago) Anyway, I have attached the two logs as requested.

All assigned tasks ran successfully. However, I do have a question regarding CCleaner. I did run the "Windows" tab, but was unsure if you also wanted me to do "Applications" and "Registry" as well. I usually do run all three on my own.

    Thanks so much....Next?

Sorry about the multiple postings, but I forgot to add one more item. You previously mentioned my security suites. I am aware of my Verizon subscription but do not know what "Radial Point Software Security Suite" is. I wanted to make sure you were aware of that.

No! We just want to run the disk cleaner.

Can you check on what Verizon uses to see if it is Radial Point.

I think I found my answer in the below advertisement from RadialPoint which shows Verizon.

I just did a quick search and found that Verizon does use Radialpoint technology. As for CCleaner, should I leave the applications and registry portion alone all the time?

Also, I have been using Eusing Registry Cleaner....is this a no-no as well? I think I am using some superfluous tools in an attempt to over-protect my computer.

It is rarely necessary to use a registry cleaner and it is not going to improve anything dramatically. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Registry cleaners do not protect you from malware.

Your logs are clean as they have been from the beginning. Thus all you need to do now is the below final steps.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommed you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware as a scanner. It uses no resources except a little disk space until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
      • Delete the C:\combo-fix folder from combofix.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    7. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    8. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    chaslang-
Before I do the closing steps, maybe you can address one more issue. When I shut down my pc's (both laptop and desktop), I am getting the UiHiddenPop message that the "program is not responding". Are there additional steps I need to take to address this?

    Thank you so, so much.

It is related to some program that you are running that is just not gracefully terminating. You could try shutting down as many programs as you can manually first before click shutdown to see if you can identify what. Since it is on two PCs, it is more than likely a program they have in common. Perhaps even the RadialPoint Software. If you wish to continue a discussion on this, the Software Forum would be the place.
